our president is against it...and he says that you are too...what is your opinion?

A strong America must also value the institution of marriage. I believe we should respect individuals as we take a principled stand for one of the most fundamental, enduring institutions of our civilization. Congress has already taken a stand on this issue by passing the Defense of Marriage Act, signed in 1996 by President Clinton. That statute protects marriage under Federal law as the union of a man and a woman, and declares that one state may not redefine marriage for other states. Activist judges, however, have begun redefining marriage by court order, without regard for the will of the people and their elected representatives. On an issue of such great consequence, the people's voice must be heard. If judges insist on forcing their arbitrary will upon the people, the only alternative left to the people would be the constitutional process. Our nation must defend the sanctity of marriage.

The outcome of this debate is important -- and so is the way we conduct it. The same moral tradition that defines marriage also teaches that each individual has dignity and value in God's sight.

I just think this was such a good oppurtunity for all of us to learn from each other - and it was wasted in drama.

My heterosexual, married-in-a-church parents have been divorced for nearly that long!

Who are we to say what a human being who has committed feelings for someone else should or shouldn't be allowed to do?

ETA: I wasn't the one who posted 'THE' Lesbian anyway. I just copied that from someones post...It didn't make sense to refer to someone like that. What's next? THE cripple?

It was not meant that way at all. It was a way of identifying who I was talking about without naming names. You read way more from that than was there. No need to be so defensive.

I could care less. If 2 people love each other and I mean any 2 people whatever sex they are, who are we to say if they should be together or not.
I do not believe in what the president has to say about this.

I sagree 100% ! If 2 people are in love and happy, what should it matter? If I fell in love with a girl and felt 100% sure of it, I'd want the same rights as heterosexual couples. They are not deviants or wierd. They just have found something special in a person of the same sex. What's wrong with that????

I voted no, but after reading everyones comments and thinking of my own personal experiences, I guess I am kind of undecided. I have a lot of family memebers that are gay. For one, my godmother. Then I have a bunch of cousins that are gay. And what I guess it really comes down to to me, is that I want them all to be happy. And I guess if that means them getting married than I would totally support them.
So, I guess I am more leaning towards YES.. I would support them.

I think when I first read this topic, I was thinking of exactly what Marcellabella posted a few pages back that people often think about what goes on behind closed doors, and I think that is what I jumped to thinking about when I said no. But now thinking and picturing my cousins at events we go to, I sorta see how they really love each other soo much and I wish they could have all the opportunities in life that everyone else has.
I don't think president bush or anyone else for that matter has the right to tell someone who they should be with, marry and spend the rest of their life with. That is a personal decision everyone must make for themself.
I hope all this makes sense. I went from no, to undecided , to yes all in one post.

I'm really upset reading this long post, it saddens me to see how many people are still unopen to homosexual couples.

Some people say they're open and unpredjudice yet wouldn't vote yes for them. Does sexual orientation have to do with unalliable human rights..especially dignity?

I have several very close family members and friends who are homosexual. I cannot imagine them not being able to marry if they so desire. Why should they not marry , just because it might make some people uncomfortable???

Imagine you and your FH having to run off to Canada or another State to make it official. How horrible and tramatic for them.

Ok I have one more thing to ask....I have wondered before this topic why we never see any same sex couples planning their wedding on LIW....so, if there are any out there - speaking for myself, I wouldn't mind.

I have seen it on the knot also. I saw wo girls get talked to really mean on the knot too. If there are any same sex couples out there. I would love to talk to them.I was in my cousins comitment ceromony at the thatched cottage and had a blast!
