since this is a wedding website - what is your opinion on same sex marriage?

Original post by yabbobay

our president is against it...and he says that you are too...what is your opinion?

A strong America must also value the institution of marriage. I believe we should respect individuals as we take a principled stand for one of the most fundamental, enduring institutions of our civilization. Congress has already taken a stand on this issue by passing the Defense of Marriage Act, signed in 1996 by President Clinton. That statute protects marriage under Federal law as the union of a man and a woman, and declares that one state may not redefine marriage for other states. Activist judges, however, have begun redefining marriage by court order, without regard for the will of the people and their elected representatives. On an issue of such great consequence, the people's voice must be heard. If judges insist on forcing their arbitrary will upon the people, the only alternative left to the people would be the constitutional process. Our nation must defend the sanctity of marriage.

The outcome of this debate is important -- and so is the way we conduct it. The same moral tradition that defines marriage also teaches that each individual has dignity and value in God's sight.

On the one hand...When I say 'what's next' I mean...What about friends who live together? Sisters? Where are the lines going to be drawn as far as what benefits people are entitled to?

On the other hand...What about people who are 'common law' married? Those people in that partnership have no legal rights to ANY benefits...
It's just unfair...

The line is being drawn at marriage, which is precisely where the line is now.

People who are common law married CHOOSE to be that way. Homosexuals have no such choice.

Point taken. You don't know what brings people to where they are, however...True that may not be the point or the concern of politicians and lawmakers, I just think there are bigger concerns than whether or not gays should marry.

I'd like to know where the other 12 people who said no are.
Fess up!

Cim...there are few states that still allow common law marriages and afford to them the same rights and privileges of a legal marriage. Most of the rights that are involved are usually dealt with only upon divorce or death, rather than on a daily basis. I imagine most insurance companies would not allow common law spouses to put each other on the policy.

I know that my insurance company will ONLY insure same sex domestic partners and will not insure FH and me because of the simple fact that we have the ability to get married.

FU&K PRES BUSH!

I voted YES and I would keep re-voting if the poll would let me

I agree. I ABSOLUTELY think that gays should be allowed to marry.

I voted yes.

I see no reason why 2 people who love oneanother cannot marry. I do not see why 2 men or 2 women who choose to marry, are breaking the foundations of family in our country. ESPECIALLY when we have shows like Bachelor, Joe Millionaire, My Big Fat, etc.

The union of 2 adults, who are in love, is beautiful and should be respected - regardless of their sexual preferences.

Of course there are bigger concerns, which is why they should allow it and be done with it.

However, the religious right cannot stand by and allow such an abomination (as it is listed in the book of Leviticus) to take place. Granted, similar abominations listed in this SAME PASSAGE include being left-handed, eating shellfish (who went to Red Lobster last night - I know you're out there!), and wearing mixed fibers as clothing. All you Polyester wearers - watch out because you're next!!!!!!!!

I hate to say it, but it DOES come down to an issue of civil rights, religion, and politics.

You're right, Kelly, There ARE things that are more important to worry about than whether or not these people should be able to get married. So just allow them to get married, and focus on more important issues.

President Bush wouldn't be spending so much time on this if he weren't such a blatant Homophobe.

I voted yes! The smug little monkey man should mind his own f*cking business. I somehow doubt he's being propositioned by any homosexuals who want to marry him. So what's it to him what other people do? Stay the f*ck out of people's bedrooms, homes, and hearts!

I could not have said it better myself!!!

IMHO, I could care less who gets married, if you wnat then go do it. I just think it all boils down to people ahveing the choice to marry f they want. If I didn't ahve the opportuinty to marry my DH becasue George Bush didn't think it was right I would flip. He needs to be out of office!!!! He wants to take away the rights of women, gays and who is next? If you are not a republican man, carrying around a bible, you should have no rights????

Edited to add: Who are the other 13 that voted no?? Why don't you want to voice your opinion?

Thanks! I wonder where the other 12 people are...Besides...I'm not actually against it in the way that everyone might at have first perceived...

I agree with your state of Iraq comment, 100% I like him, don't get me wrong...But can we worry about the state of our country first????Jobs, taxes, healthcare, etc...

Does anyone here realize that he was speaking out against rogue judges going against what he believes is the 'will of the people', and not gay marriages (not in so many words really)? His opinion on the matter means squat and he knows it. He's on the fence with this statement. He can't do anything to stop it anyway!

Despite my dislike for Bush, I actually don't think he is a homophobe. I do think he is a puppet of the religious right and that he needs them to continue to support him if he is to be re-elected (God forbid), so he has to take this stand to keep those votes.

Wait until the real debates start. When he starts to talk about the need for conservative judges who will strike down laws that legalize gay marriage and abortion.

The point about the white man and his bible was made better than I could make it, in an earlier post. Lord help the non-white, non-male, non-Christian American if Bush takes that oath again in 2005. All we'll need is American Bandstand and we'll all be living in the 1950s again

Bravo to Kelly for being the only no voter brave enough to speak her mind
