A strong America must also value the institution of marriage. I believe we should respect individuals as we take a principled stand for one of the most fundamental, enduring institutions of our civilization. Congress has already taken a stand on this issue by passing the Defense of Marriage Act, signed in 1996 by President Clinton. If judges insist on forcing their arbitrary will upon the people, the only alternative left to the people would be the constitutional process. Our nation must defend the sanctity of marriage.
The outcome of this debate is important -- and so is the way we conduct it. The same moral tradition that defines marriage also teaches that each individual has dignity and value in God's sight.

Despite my dislike for Bush, I actually don't think he is a homophobe. I do think he is a puppet of the religious right and that he needs them to continue to support him if he is to be re-elected (God forbid), so he has to take this stand to keep those votes.

I voted no and I don't think on an issue such as this I need to aruge why I feel the way I do. We are all entitled to feel how we feel on this.
Just to make it clear, it has nothing to do with hate or fear either, so anyone that thinks this, drop that thought.

Wait until the real debates start. When he starts to talk about the need for conservative judges who will strike down laws that legalize gay marriage and abortion.

I seem to be just agreeing today instead of voicing my own opinion...but you all are saying it so much better than my time constraints will allow!

I don't think anyone was beaten. There was a debate...people have personal opinions that are sometimes protected by their feelings and things become misconstrued as a result of this sensitivity.
I thought everyone's opinions - regardless of whether everyone agreed or not - were respected and handled as such.

I didn't vote, because I have have mixed feeling about this as well. While I have nothing against gays and know and work closely with a few very delightful people who are, the whole thing just doesn't make much sense to me, as sonia said. I certainly see the practical points behind it: medical coverege through your spouse's job, inheritance, etc, eyc. However, in my eyes marriage will alway be a union between a man and a woman... that's what i feel.

My comment was not to this thread in particular, my comment was for all threads in general. A lot more people would freely share how they felt, if they did not feel as if they would not be beaten over their heads for their opinions.
Please do not read more in to my comment than was meant. I did not read the thread, I just responded after the youung lady stated she was afraid to state her opinion and why.
