I don't think anyone was beaten. There was a debate...people have personal opinions that are sometimes protected by their feelings and things become misconstrued as a result of this sensitivity.

I thought everyone's opinions - regardless of whether everyone agreed or not - were respected and handled as such.

Personally, for those of you who said its not a about gays in particular or a religious issue, I'm truly interested in understanding where your opinion is coming from.

I didn't have time to read this entire thread but I hope it didn't get too ugly

I personally am for same-sex marriages. Who are we to tell others not to marry who they love? I personally think it's not for the gov't to decide.

That's where the money aspect comes in.

married couples get insurance breaks...
money, money, money.
true bush may be a bible belt...but i don't think his motives are all as righteous as he claims.

I'm cluless, too as to the money aspect.

I also feel that whether or not you want to get married is a personal choice. And it's our right to get married if we want. Therefore, people who are gay are denied this right just because of their sexual preference and I fail to understand why this is fair.
How anyone can force their beliefs on anyone is beyond me.

If you're not for gay marriage or don't believe it's right, don't marry someone else of the same sex!! Let those who want to have that choice!

I agree....I don't want to bash anyone for their opinion I just want to understand it.
I just feel that the right to marry the person you love should be granted to everyone and anyone and I would be intersted to hear the opposing views and opinions....

Married couples do not get a tax break, they actually wind up paying more, because at this point there is a marriage penalty tax, as some call it. The standard deduction for 2 individuals is higher then for the Married filing Joint standard deduction.

Also my DH has to pay extra for me to be covered under his insurance, it is not free!!

What if in their relationship one is the stay at home parent, should they have to have no insurance or pay 700 a month?

Also, I don't think that the small benefit married couples get from insuracne costs over single people, would really be the reason someone would want to get married.

I would imagine that 2 males or 2 females that love each other would marry for the same reason I marreid my DH, because I love him and want to spend the rest of my life together.

I think I see what Kelly is saying. She believes that Bush's assertion that he is protecting the 'sanctity of marriage' may not be his real motive for denying gays the right to marry. Rather, he is protecting big business (ie. the insurance companies, etc.) who will lose money if gays are permitted to marry and therefore pay family rates.

I don't think she is saying that the only reason homosexuals want to marry has something to do with money.

Sigh. Thank you. I generally am very articulate, but it's hard when 1) people are so eager to jump down your throat 2) you're talking about something so shady which also has many sides...

Of course I'm not saying that the only reason gays would want to marry is for money. God.
Really. I don't give a F#@k what people do. I am a FIRM believer in LIVE AND LET LIVE. But a question was posed. And I answered it. And for whatever reason I answered NO.
