since this is a wedding website - what is your opinion on same sex marriage?

Original post by yabbobay

our president is against it...and he says that you are too...what is your opinion?

A strong America must also value the institution of marriage. I believe we should respect individuals as we take a principled stand for one of the most fundamental, enduring institutions of our civilization. Congress has already taken a stand on this issue by passing the Defense of Marriage Act, signed in 1996 by President Clinton. That statute protects marriage under Federal law as the union of a man and a woman, and declares that one state may not redefine marriage for other states. Activist judges, however, have begun redefining marriage by court order, without regard for the will of the people and their elected representatives. On an issue of such great consequence, the people's voice must be heard. If judges insist on forcing their arbitrary will upon the people, the only alternative left to the people would be the constitutional process. Our nation must defend the sanctity of marriage.

The outcome of this debate is important -- and so is the way we conduct it. The same moral tradition that defines marriage also teaches that each individual has dignity and value in God's sight.

married couples get a tax break...
married couples are entitled to health benefits...
married couples get insurance breaks...
money, money, money.
true bush may be a bible belt...but i don't think his motives are all as righteous as he claims.

Where is anyone attacking in this post?

I think people are just stating their opinions

I think tone is often misconstrued on here.

FYI: for those saying 'common law' are not entitled to benefits etc....

My DH, before we were married, was on my insurance plan as my 'domestic partner'
All I had to do was show proof that he lived with me.

I have very good insurance, and I know this is not the case with every insurance, but there are agencies willing to allow this. I am proof.

Just wanted to throw that out there.....

I also want to make it clear that I am not closed minded when it comes to opposing viewpoints, I am just curious.
There is nothing wrong with asking why....

Kudo's to all the girls willing to state their opinion whether they are in the minority or not...I applaud you for standing up for what you believe....
But why be so apprehensive to discuss the reasons?

Attack is when you say something different ,and an arsonal of people post the same repetative view back at ya, maybe not attack literally but when people keep posting and quoting and double quoting it gets nerve wracking

I think this happens because the majority are trying to understand the minority....
You have a lot of people asking questions at the same time....It's not attacking, it's just curiosity.

I agree....I don't want to bash anyone for their opinion I just want to understand it.
I would be intersted to hear the opposing views and opinions....

Sage, not everyone might be as open as you, to hear, rather read opposing views on a topic, so instead of being open, they bash.

I am open to hearing everyone's opinion as well, its just that some people do not feel comfortable stating theirs, b/c on more than one occasion on many a threads people have been treated badly for stating their opinion.

This is certainly not the norm. It's wonderful that you got to take advantage of something like this...But there are many people who have no such benefits...

I understand....you're right about that!
I can admitt there has been more than one time that I have held back my opinion due to fear of bashing....

So what are we saying????!!!

I say SMILE. There are worse things out there.

We're on this site because we're getting (or have gotten) married.

Let's leave it at that!

I was covered at one time under my boyfriend's health plan. I am glad the laws have changed now for 'common law' couples to be able to take advantage of this. The things we had to do to prove that I was common law took us to hell and back.
