since this is a wedding website - what is your opinion on same sex marriage?

Original post by yabbobay

our president is against it...and he says that you are too...what is your opinion?

A strong America must also value the institution of marriage. I believe we should respect individuals as we take a principled stand for one of the most fundamental, enduring institutions of our civilization. Congress has already taken a stand on this issue by passing the Defense of Marriage Act, signed in 1996 by President Clinton. That statute protects marriage under Federal law as the union of a man and a woman, and declares that one state may not redefine marriage for other states. Activist judges, however, have begun redefining marriage by court order, without regard for the will of the people and their elected representatives. On an issue of such great consequence, the people's voice must be heard. If judges insist on forcing their arbitrary will upon the people, the only alternative left to the people would be the constitutional process. Our nation must defend the sanctity of marriage.

The outcome of this debate is important -- and so is the way we conduct it. The same moral tradition that defines marriage also teaches that each individual has dignity and value in God's sight.

I hear you....enough said.
Admittedly, it's a lot easier to state your opinion when you are in the majority...

Again, Kudo's to you all for stating your beliefs!

Ok - back to being and getting married!!!!

I see no reason why 2 people who love oneanother cannot marry. I do not see why 2 men or 2 women who choose to marry, are breaking the foundations of family in our country. ESPECIALLY when we have shows like Bachelor, Joe Millionaire, My Big Fat, etc.

.

Excellent point

OMG, you are soooo right! I absolutely OPPOSE stupid Bush's perspective on gay marriage, however I never thought of it in the terms you just stated! If he's so 'righteous' about the sanctity of marriage, than he should put a ban on reality shows that are making a mockery out of love and marriage!

The gay community does not deserve to suffer more at the hands of our government. They suffer enough on a daily basis, with judgement being passed on them from other citizens of this country.

I would like to hear the opinions of the people who voted no.

I think love is love and gay people should be allowed to be married. If we think about it interracial marriages used to illegal and that has changed.

I'm one of the ones who voted no.
I don't know...Maybe I'm traditional, maybe I'm old fashioned...I just don't think it's right...
I thought gay marriages already do occur-is it that they are just not officially recognized? I don't understand exactly what the fight is about...
I had a boss who was married to a man...And I do have friends who are gay...I don't mind it...But why make it official? On a seperate note...I actually don't think it's fair to be able to put your same sex partner on your medical insurance...That part just makes me crazy...
Where are the lines going to be drawn? What is next?

Oh MY GOD!! no offense, but if that's the case, then why are you getting married? I mean, why make it 'official?'

I think they should be allowed to get married. What is the big deal. I need a hear a real argument why they shouldn't. And Bush saying we should respect the institution of marriage is defintely not a good one. He should look at how st8 people are respecting the institution of marriage with the divorce percentages out there. geeeeeesh

His own brother (not jeb the other one) and ex-sister in law could not even respect the institute of marriage. Didn't one of them cheat on the other?

I think that it's fine. I don't mind homosexual marriages, commitments, relationships, etc.

I voted no... however, I do think they should be able to have a union, which gives them the same legal rights as married couples. Writing this down, though, I realize that there really isnt much of a difference between a marriage and a union, so why even have this distinction?

Let me refine my comment then. I think the state should allow gay marriage, but each religion, church, etc. should have the right to not recognize or perform such marriages. So gay couples can be legally married in city hall, but the church cannot be forced to do the same (unless they choose to).

On the other hand...What about people who are 'common law' married? Those people in that partnership have no legal rights to ANY benefits...

I believe it depends on the state.

seriously though.. not bashing, AT ALL, I'm just really curious, that's all.. I admit I replied rather prematurely in the thread, without having read hte entire thread, but just wanted to know..

I think that people think of what homosexuals do behind closed doors and that's what makes them think what they think, as opposed to looking at the bigger picture and realize that they should at least have a choice..

I understand that. But I still go with my opinion.

exactly, so why shouldn't they be allowed to do the same?

i have no solid answer for you.
it is a free country and people should be allowed to do what they want...i think the lines get blurred though when mixing church and state ...perhaps some things are not meant to be decided by the govt.
(i think this was mentioned earlier)
