since this is a wedding website - what is your opinion on same sex marriage?

Original post by yabbobay

our president is against it...and he says that you are too...what is your opinion?

A strong America must also value the institution of marriage. I believe we should respect individuals as we take a principled stand for one of the most fundamental, enduring institutions of our civilization. Congress has already taken a stand on this issue by passing the Defense of Marriage Act, signed in 1996 by President Clinton. That statute protects marriage under Federal law as the union of a man and a woman, and declares that one state may not redefine marriage for other states. Activist judges, however, have begun redefining marriage by court order, without regard for the will of the people and their elected representatives. On an issue of such great consequence, the people's voice must be heard. If judges insist on forcing their arbitrary will upon the people, the only alternative left to the people would be the constitutional process. Our nation must defend the sanctity of marriage.

The outcome of this debate is important -- and so is the way we conduct it. The same moral tradition that defines marriage also teaches that each individual has dignity and value in God's sight.

I voted yes! The smug little monkey man should mind his own f*cking business. I somehow doubt he's being propositioned by any homosexuals who want to marry him. So what's it to him what other people do? Stay the f*ck out of people's bedrooms, homes, and hearts!

That was hilarious, thanks for the early morning laugh. I doubt anyone is propositioning Bush, I think thats the reason he always has that 'there is a stick up my as$ right now' expression on his face.

Smug little monkey....that was really funny LOL

I would like to hear the opinions of the people who voted no.

I think love is love and gay people should be allowed to be married. If we think about it interracial marriages used to illegal and that has changed.

I'm one of the ones who voted no.
I don't know...Maybe I'm traditional, maybe I'm old fashioned...I just don't think it's right...
I thought gay marriages already do occur-is it that they are just not officially recognized? I don't understand exactly what the fight is about...
I had a boss who was married to a man...And I do have friends who are gay...I don't mind it...But why make it official? On a seperate note...I actually don't think it's fair to be able to put your same sex partner on your medical insurance...That part just makes me crazy...
Where are the lines going to be drawn? What is next?

First of all, why do lines need to be drawn? Secondly, there is absolutely a need to make it official. Imagine this scenario: You live in a house owned by your DH, for many years. He gets sick, God forbid, he passes away. and then his family comes, takes control of his final arrangements, takes his house and kicks you out on the street. You've spent your life with this person, you're grieving your loss, and now you're homeless and your DH's wishes, only known to you, are not being followed because the family is doing what you want. Is that fair? I say no way. But that happens all the time. This is why it should be official, IMO.

And the big homophobe in office wants to pass a constitutional amendment to make this kind of inequality law.

Yes, absolutely.
ALlowing this kind of disparate treatment of gays is exactly the kind of thing that encourages hate to continue. And it's the president that's supporting it!!! Arrrgghhh.

Ciminok, I wonder why you think it is not fair the same sex partners can put their partner on their health insurance? To turn your statement back on you, isn't it inherently unfair that two homosexuals can live together as partners for sixty years and still not be entitled to benefits that a heterosexual couple who is married for six years and then divorces is entitled to?

And I have only come across a few health insurance plans which allow same sex partner benefits. The line is clearly drawn in those policies as they specifically define a same sex partner as someone with whom you are living and with whom you share an intimate relationship.

I don't mean to be argumentative, because I respect you for coming forward and stating your opinion, but where are you afraid the line will be moved to and why do you view the result as negative?

I believe in the sanctity of Marriage.

That's why Homosexuals should be allowed to enter into it.

Take that, Homophobe Bush!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ooh, that felt good.

But what are you assuming they deserve to be treated any differently than you and I?
That's the difference....you see them as seperate from us, whereas people who voted yes, don't.

First off, you have no right to say to me that I 'SEE THEM AS SEPERATE FROM US'. You don't know me and you have no right to make false accusations.

An opinion was asked for and I gave it. I do not think it's fair to be attacked for having one. Just because I don't think gays should be allowed to marry does not mean I foster hatred towards gays or anyone else for that matter. I am completely appalled at the response I got.

I voted yes.

I see nothing wrong with this.

Ciminok...no one was attacking you. You stated an opinion and it was questioned as to the meaning behind it. Perhaps assumptions were made, but I don't think anyone was attacking you.

although I usually don't mind president Bush I really am starting to reconsider my party affiliations when being a republican means being linked with the Christian Right- as far as I'm concerned, Bush needs to stop taking it up the A55 from the Christian Right leaders...

which makes me sick because if they were really Christians they would be tolerant of ALL of god's children... and that includes Gay and Straight people- and therefore, if they want to participate in the sanctity of marriage, far be it for some man to say yes or no..

i think they should be allowed to get married. why not? if they love each other who cares? i think the gov't should stop sticking its nose in people's personal business.

i read on cnn before the speech that he was going to talk about this and my first reaction was 'that's not a good idea in an election year' and then i thought some more and realized sadly that it will probably garner him more support in many areas of the country. i just don't understand why people hate gays so much. and i guess that's why i hate religion so much, b/c people use that as a basis to be intolerant, ignorant and hateful.

anyway, i think he's crazy if he doesn't already think the sanctity of marriage is gone. what's the divorce rate? 50%? yeah people really value those vows they take, please....

okay enough the whole issue just makes me so mad.

WHOA!!! I wasn't attacking you at all.....

Apologies if that's how you took it, but I, as well as you, have a right to my opinion.
If this is a forum of opinion, I was just stating mine...
Discussing, debating, thinking etc....that's all we're doing here.....

I was just bringing up some points that I feel are valid ones...

ETA: I never said, nor do I think that you garner any hatred toward ANYONE.

I honestly don't think this issue has to do with homophobes or hatred or even religion...
Let us be reminded that politicians aren't so righteous either.

I think it has to do with money. And that's the part that bothers me.

On the one hand...When I say 'what's next' I mean...What about friends who live together? Sisters? Where are the lines going to be drawn as far as what benefits people are entitled to?

On the other hand...What about people who are 'common law' married? Those people in that partnership have no legal rights to ANY benefits...
It's just unfair...
I don't think the issue of gay marriages should even be an issue when there are bigger things to consider.

I am not opposed to it. There are so many benefits attached to such a union (inheritance, health benefits, etc.) that I believe should be shared.

I believe a solution to this issue would be to allow same sex unions, but call it a domestic union or something like that instead of marriage. Since the term 'marriage' has religious connotations, maybe that will keep people happy.

As Shakespeare says 'A rose by any other name would still smell as sweet.'
Sage10.03 Posted:

Re: since this is a wedding website - what is your opinion on same sex marriage?

I understand what you are saying, but people that are in 'common law' marriages have an understanding that their choice bears the consequnece on not having these benefits.

I am no one to question the reason these couples choose not to marry, but the fact is, if they do so choose, they can.
Gay couples do not even have that choice and that is what I feel is wrong.
jannshari Posted:

Re: since this is a wedding website - what is your opinion on same sex marriage?

Actually, the states that recognize common law marriages DO give the 'spouses' the same benefits as legally married couples. The difference between heterosexual couples who choose to live together and homosexual couples is that heterosexual couples have the ability to legalize their rights and benefits through marriage. Homosexuals have no options.

And I very much disagree that this doesn't have to do with religion. I think it has everything to do with religion and Bush's own morality. Morality is an intensely personal set of values, which is why it belongs no where near law-making.

Admittedly, I was not aware of this.

This is the point I was trying (badly ) to make.
They deserve the choice and the right to legalize their union.

The line is being drawn at marriage, which is precisely where the line is now.

People who are common law married CHOOSE to be that way. Homosexuals have no such choice.

ETA: obviously I didn't read the other posts before mine essentially saying the exact same thing. Ciminok, I know all these replies are in response to you and I hope you don't feel badly about that, but you're the only person who's participating on the other side of this debate.

Apples and oranges maybe....

This was better than coffee.
