You might all remember last October I rescued 2 little kittens. They were about 3-4 weeks old and were abandon by my job. It happend that one really cold week in October when it was like 30 degrees out. I knew they wouldn't survive so I took them in.
Now it is time to get them both fixed and their front paws declawed. (only way I could keep them was to do this, I am not a huge fan of it but I have to). It is sooo expensive. I really can't afford to have them both done and I don't want to seperate them after all this time. They are so sweet and it kills me to think of giving one of them up.
I have called so many different vets and no one will work on price with me. I explained how I want to give them a loving home if they can help me out and they won't. Everyone is saying they won't budge on price. Well maybe this is why there are abandon animals everywhere. I'm just so sad, anyone with info on affordable vet care please let me know.
I already called Island Rescue in Bay Shore, they were the cheapest. I called the town animal shelter, (who immediately told me even if I don't keep them they won't take them... ) plus a bunch of other 'affordable' (or so they say) animal care places.

UPDATE!!! Thank you all for your advice. I took it all and did a lot of research it turns out I was getting a pretty incredible price from Island Rescue so I will go with them. My mom and I are going to split the cost so we are all good with that too.
I think I was just getting discouraged because I just felt if you are willing to give an animal (or 2!) a loving home they should help out a little more. Oh well ya can't win them all....
THANK YOU ALL FOR THE HELP, the FM's and the of course your more than GENEROUS OFFERS you are all incredible!

I used to use Coram Cat Hospital but they moved. How about Kent?

Re: So sad I could cry
im surprised the shelters won't help with the cost of the vet bills.
my sister just recently took in a cat and they called a shelter that had no room. They told my sister they would pay for the vet bills for all their shots, etc. if they would adopt them. I would think since you are adopting these kittens they would try to help u

Re: So sad I could cry
A lot of vets nowadays prefer not to declaw, which is why there is a big price tag attached to the procedure - to prevent people from doing it. If the animals ever get out, their first line of defense is their claws and without them, they're pretty much an easy target for other animals.
There is something you can get that kind of 'caps' their claws - if you start it on them as kittens, they'll just get used to the feeling and will wear them as adults.
They look like nail polish (or you can get them in clear). Here's the site: Claw Caps
eta: From what I understand, getting kittens fixed isn't very pricy. Are they breaking down the costs for you in regard to fixing them/vaccinating them/declawing them? I think the declawing is driving up the price for you.

Kris, these are HILARIOUS! I can't imagine a cat walking around with purple, orange, green, etc. claws

Try Bide a Wee, Shauna. I remember them being reasonable a few years ago, I'm not sure how the prices are now though.
I know what you mean. There have been many time people have offered me kittens because no one else will take them, but I can't afford the vet bills, especially if the cat happens to be sick and gets my existing cat sick too, so I had to say no! Otherwise those animals would have homes.

They're really funny - they look so silly but they're suppossed to be really good if you get a cat used to them really young.
I, unfortunately, have to clip the cats' nails about once every two weeks...mine are all too old to get used to them.

Really?! I never heard of this, that's amazing. FH had to take 4 kittens to the pound las t fall because NONE of the shelters from Brooklynt o Suffol would take them.. it was a very bad year for kittens, so many of them! And none of them offered to pay any vet bills

Re: So sad I could cry
They have a free spray neuter voucher program offered from the ASCPA. Did you check into this? Also try lovethatcat.com for a list in NY.

Yeah, I agree a lot of vets refuse to do declawing. I personally don't like the practice of it, but I realzie in your instance it's necessary. How about getting them clipped instead of declawed?
i found a stray at some point a few months ago and got a certificate for a $25 spaying ... you can probably do that ... i can't help with the declawing, sorry.
i went to New Hope (i think) ... i had to fill out a form and send it in, and i got the certificate about a week later.
ps: i think it's great that you adopted the two kitties ...

Re: So sad I could cry
As far as fixing them, try:
friendsofanimals.org
They're an organization of Vets in the USA who offer GREATLY reduces priced on spays and neuters for dogs and cats. We used them for both of our dogs. At the time, it was $65 to neuter my male and $95 to spay my female. You buy the voucher from their site and select a vet in your area who works with the program (they're all listed on the website)/ I hope this helps save you some $$$ so you can keep them both!!!
Good luck!

Re: So sad I could cry
try hauppauge animal hospital 631-265-5551 a friend of mine works there, she's told me in passing that the dr there would drop his prices in special circumstances. usually where the person can not afford it and the idea of giving up the animal or having it euthanized is brought up. He is a total animal lover.. like if an animal is left on his steps he'll care for it then take it to his own home and give it a good life.
Also, sunrise vet in bay shore/west islip.. thats where my parents take their dog, according to my father they try and work with you on the price.
good luck!

Re: So sad I could cry
I h ave a great vet in the floral park area who came in a nearly half of what everyone else was charging to get my dog fixed. He's a great doc and very honest - which is why his business is booming. FM me if you're interested in his info

try kent animal shelter for the spaying/neutering. I think they charge between $60-90 for that. I was told that brookhaven animal shelter declaws for like $90. hth!
