Spinnoff from Newlyweds: Gamer Widows, etc.. 'Don't knock it...'

Original post by Xelindrya

Being that I’m a gamer myself I have a few questions..

What’s wrong with saying “I’m in the middle of something?” or “Just let me __fill in the blank__?”

I play games to escape from the BS of life as it is. It’s a harmless stress reliever. Kids these days are expert gamers. Our generation has to put in hours at work, life, etc. We can’t just sit in front of a TV all day. So if we play online games with interaction with the outside world we need extra time and concentration to really play up to ‘par’.

The purpose being gaming is to win. The game, the quest, the battle, the puzzle.. whatever.

I game.

I am up to 3am on Friday nights (the only night I don’t have school, physical therapy) and it’s MY TIME. Jim can do what ever the heck he wants. Mostly he watches with me and laughs, oohs, ahhs or just enjoys me getting frustrated when I get stuck. It’s a couple thing for us.

I hear so many complaints from wives on here with gamer hubbies. I wonder, does it really bother you that much? If so, did it bother you that much when you were dating? Or is this just like that football thing.. something that ‘guys’ do that wives can roll their eyes and giggle behind their backs. I’m a football fan too!

I think a lot of what the way we think today about men/women type activities has been taught to us at younger ages. Like, young ladies don’t waste time on stupid video games, that’s something icky boys do … which is turned into “why is my hubby always on that game?” and Only boys go nuts with football and games they aren’t even in and act like it’s life or death…. Which turns into the football widows.

Do you, any of you man or woman, try to actually see why it is your partner is so involved in stuff like gaming, sports or other things? Have you tried to see what brings them so much joy out of it?

Just curious

I'd rather my DH at home playing games than out at a bar with all his single friends that are trying to pick up girls.

Not that I don't give my DH freedom...he can do what he wants...he'd just rather play games and that's fine with me!

It doesn't bother me. Why because i am here on LIW when he is 'gaming'. And we do it in the same room...So we still talk and laugh about both.

Same here... alot of times he pulls me away from LIW and goes 'watch this' or look at these graphics, etc... Or I'll read a funny post to him or something.

Fh used to play Everquest, and it became obsessive. Like Anniegrl, I almost broke up with him for it b/c it was interfering with our relationship. He would play all night until 7am, oversleep out 11am date and I'd get pissed.

I'm not anti-gamer. i have a few that i love, and games were really helpful when it came to bonding with his family. we'd play sole calibur, pokemon, and have a really good time. it was really the obsession that made me angry.

I offered to buy DH a game system for Christmas and he declined, because he thought he'd never get anything done. Since he often has work to do at home, I don't want to tempt him. I don't think it would interfere with our time, but I know it would interfere with his research and other work.

I am the one who spends a lot of time online. I guess if DH was into games I would have to make my own determination of what 'excessive' was but I like getting time to myself. I don't know when I would get fed up.

My DH doesn't play the games, but he plays online poker. I think the only problem is setting boundaries--there is a point when it is addiction; when you don't know when to stop and it becomes all-consuming. With one computer, that was also a problem for us since I can't get on when he plays. With the online poker, losing and playing with real money is also an issue.

I think with anything setting aside time for it is great, but when it becomes all you do as soon as you get home from work til when you go to sleep, maybe that's a problem.

That's exactly what DH and I do too. It's too funny when I show him a picture of Valentinegirl's dog and he says 'Chewie!!!'

Too funny!!
