OK, this is a spinoff of OctGroom's engagement ring thread.
I've always had a thing about engagement rings. Frankly (and I know some of you are going to be-head me for this), but I don't believe that a ring should be an accepted part of being engaged. Yes, I got boosh a ring, but that was because I wanted to, not because I was expected to.
Basically, I feel that when a man is professing his love for a woman, that is gift enough. A ring shouldn;t be automatic and expected. But I know some girls who will say, 'if my ring isn't 3 karats, i'm not accepting the proposal' Or, they'll accept it, but won't be happy.
Is it true, are engagement rings THAT important? and why? And should a ring be a certain size?
I look forward to the answers

Re: SPINOFF: In the honor of OctGroom
I think that most women place value on it because it is the first thing people look at when you get engaged....most women scream 'lets see the ring!!!'.....so the size and overall beauty of it matters in the short term.
For you guys out there - it is the equivalent of showing off your car, or best power tool or golf clubs or whatever it is you guys show off!!
I think that a man should buy what he can afford but to be honest with you it is one more symbol or tradition in a whole host of symbols that weddings represent. I got sucked into the whole wedding thing too and I love my e-ring but it isnt the biggest out there. It is a nice, well cut, F color, 1 carat round diamond set in platinum. But to be honest, being married almost 2 yrs...it doesnt matter what size it is anymore. It is the commitment it represents that is most important to me.
So, in the long term, does it matter what size the ring is? My mom's ring was relatively small (just shy of 1 carat marquis in white gold) and she doesnt even wear it anymore and hasnt in probably 15 yrs. She has gotten far more beautiful (and expensive) jewelry over the yrs from my father and my parents have been married for 35 yrs and they have a happy marriage.
So, in the long term does it matter what size the ring is-- NO, but in the short term - probably YES it does!!

I knew I might not have gotten a big ring b/c at the time FH's job didn't pay much but I also didn't expect him to propose when he did.
The ring isn't big in terms of actual diamond size but it's the most unique ring I've ever seen. It has 2 settings and everyone comments on it (compliments of course). No one has the same sort of ring (as far as I know). And it was his mom's. His mom died when he was 9 and so just the fact that he wanted me to wear his mother's ring made me know that I was the one he wanted to spend the rest of his life with.
