If I knew the color the wedding party was wearing I wouldn't wear it.

Same here but I usually don't know it.

If I know what color they were wearing I wouldn't wear the same color, but I wouldn't go out of my way to find out what color the BP was wearing.

question.... if as a guest we shouldn't wear the same color as the bridal party than is it ok as the MOG or any other honored guest to wear the same color as the bridal party? where does it end! LOL I guess it REALLY doesn't matter, right?

I think because we are all planning our own weddings we are more conscious of the effort a bride puts into making her day unique and special. IMHO it is wrong to know what color the BP is wearing and then deliberately wear that color (except of course for black) to sort of 'blend in'. A family member did that to my sister when she got married in '04. This family member kept saying over and over 'I'll be a BM' and my sister ignored her suggestion except to say that she just wanted a MOH. Then the day of the wedding this family member was wearing the same color as the BP. I have already told that family member she can't wear the same color as my girls. Since she is family she will be in lots of pics. I don't think it was an unreasonable request to ONE person.

ETA: One of my FSIL asked me last week what color my girls were wearing so she didn't match. And she specifically said she wanted to make sure she didn't match.

Re: spinoff to telling guests what they can wear

Looking back now, I wore the same color as the bridal party to a friend's wedding. I didn't do it on purpose, I borrowed my mom's dress. I wonder if the bride was angry with me. I never thought about it before.

Serioulsy, if someone were to wear something to 'stand out' in some way to make a statement (and we all know someone like that! ) then they are the ones making an a** of themselves. I could personally care less and think it's pathetic.
