ssooo pathetic

I just have to share this story because im so mad/upset/ disgusted

So i bartend in long beach a few days a week to get some extra cash for the wedding... these two ladies came in today, and they looked visably upset. I give them drinks and ask them whats wrong.

they said they are getting married and are trying to plan their commitment ceremony and they went to a few catering halls ( didnt say which ones) and the BMs there were either rude, or told them they didnt do that, or just plain ignorant.. (basically insinuated they dont support/believe in gay marriage and wont be performing any ceremonies)

Im sorry but we are in 2012 in NEW freakin York. Gay weddings are just as important as any other, their money is just as green as ours, so WTEFF is the problem..

needless to say I gave them my information and told them I would plan a great wedding for them in their home and who needs these dbags!

:( So sad. I'd like to know which catering halls turned them away. They have a right to say no to same sex couples, but we also have a right to stand in solidarity and not have our weddings there!

I know Thatched Cottage does a lot of same sex marriages. When we went for our one year tour on Saturday, there was 2 women having their wedding. They had been together 30 years!

That's terrible! It's no one else's business who you fall in love with.

A friend of mine just married her partner a few weeks ago at Crest Hollow, so I know that is an option.

It is horrible that ANY catering hall would do this but I do agree that there are places like the Thatched Cottage that believe in respect of all marriages. I wish them luck

we didnt have a problem anywhere, but we did notice that some older people (like the guy at huntington harbor club) didnt seem to understand. i think he may have thought we were having a double wedding. we didnt push the issue as the place is ugly.

thatched cottage has always been known to be one of the most 'friendly' places. not sure if this is true but i had heard at one point that it was owned by a gay couple?

Re: ssooo pathetic

these ladies have been together for 10 years, and are going to city hall next week to perform ceremony then in june of next year they are going to do a big celebration party.

I find it repulsive and ignorant that anyone still thinks that they shouldnt be allowed to marry...

That's horrible. I hope one day the country looks back on these times and feels ashamed.

They should also look into Danford's. I'm pretty sure they're open-minded about that. Also the Lessing's venues had a discount for gay couples this year, I think, if they booked a 2012 wedding. I don't see it on the website right now, so I might be thinking of another place.

That's gross! I honestly have nothing else to say about this - I can't believe that mindset that people have about that.

No, it's not a typo. I meant that legally the owner of a business can turn same sex couples away. I obviously don't agree with it, but they can't take legal action. However, we as brides can spread the word and choose not to support their business.

not that i dont believe you, but I have never ever heard of this law... and Ive been doing event planning for years. Every place I have ever worked made sure to go above and beyong for gay couples, knowing that other places were such jerks.

If they can't NOT hire you based on gender preference how can they NOT do a revenue generating party

It's definitely a gray area. Under most circumstances - discriminating based on anything (including sexual orientation) is illegal. Public restaurants do not have the right to refuse service. However, areas that are not always 'open to the public' (i.e. country clubs) have the right to refuse service to anyone they want. So I guess it depends where they went and I'm not sure where most reception halls fall under in those categories. I'm not in law school or anything - I just have a lot of homosexual friends that have run into this situation in various parts of the state. None decided to/were able to take legal action.

That's ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE!!! I really wish I knew where they had been. I know you said they were going to do the ceremony in city hall, but I have a friend who's an interfaith minister and often does LGBT weddings. If they change their minds, let me know. I'll gladly put them in touch with her.
