How do you get the 'deals' at the supermarket that your talking about.

I am so bad, i dont even use regular coupons, needless to say i have MAJOR shopping expenses everymonth, and now that we are moving into the new house I would love to start doing that.

Sorry if I sound not to bright, but i am really confused..

Hey girlie!

My natural HIGH in life is grocery shopping. and I WILL NOT shop with hubby. He adds JUNK to the cart and we end up spending on things we dont need.

I have a plan of attack, know exactly what Im buying and have coupons with me.

Do you subscribe to Newsday? Right now its only $1.99 per week. WELL WORTH IT if you use the coupons.

Get to know what supermarkets are in your new area. Their circulars will now become your weekly reading

You'll be surprised at how after a month or so, you will KNOW if something is a good deal or not, just by experience.

(If there is a limit on purchases, its usually a pretty good deal )

The best advice I can give is STOCK UP. Even if you dont need it now. Many times. I have had company and had peanuts, chocolates and cookies already in my pantry (bought at great deals) and didnt have to buy last minute and spend double.

I never do a big shopping on things I NEED. The only basics I really NEED Are milk, eggs and bread. Everything else, we buy depending on what we're in the mood to cook, or whats on sale.

I have my coupons in a little holder thingie and look back through them every other week or so, and while Im looking through circulars, I may remember which coupons I have and many times I get things on sale PLUS use coupons and the price is outrageously low.

When you see $1.00 off coupons, look at them as 'try this item for practically free'.
Many times Ive gotten items I havent used before, with these coupons, where the items costs $2.00-$3.00 and with $2 off ($1 coupon doubled), I tried new products, foods, etc. for just a few cents (YEs, their goal is to get you hooked, but I try not to be an impulse shopper )

I think thats about it. By the time you stock up on everything from toothpaste, to brillo to tomato sauce, you will find that there is very little left that you NEED to buy. and you saved so much that you deserve anything (junk food) that you want!

Happy Shopping!

I'm not at this level yet (but its in my genes from my mom - so there is hope) one trick/tip I was given and I am in the process of doing is keep a little notebook of the things that you use all the time...ketchup, cereal, deoderant, etc - on page per product and every time you go shopping write down the price...sale or not...then you can look and see what a great deal is

Wow THANKS!! im gonna start to try this ASAP.. I am spending a SMALL FORTUNE at the supermarket each month.

Re: TammyJill or Anna

ERica-it becomes second instinct to know what a good deal is.. and I have it in my genes from my mom too and I used to make fun of her!
and you also have to KNOW that certain places (deli's) charge the highest possible price for anything and everything. NEVER EVER shop for last minute items at a deli. (well unless its urgent!)
This past weekend I was at my sisters house and I ran out to buy them bread. The deli had it for I think $2.19 and $1.89, well I REFUSED to buy it there I went next door to the supermarket and the same EXACT breads (I bought whole wheat and white) were 99cents and $1.29! HELLO big difference!
oh, and I have John in on this one too. Genovese/Eckerd ALWAYS has eggs for 99cents. and I go there to shop anyways, so why not get my eggs there? Why pay $1.79 at the supermarkets???

I'd never think to buy eggs at Eckerd!

anna...hopefully i will learn the prices...but I know my mom used to always send me to the local bakery to get milk...b/c that was the cheapest price...lol

Re: TammyJill or Anna

Thanks for the tips!!

I have to get better about this!! We spend so much at the supermarket sometimes and buy what we need, not when it's on sale.

My father used to do the stockpiling thing on certain staples - on average we always had 30 rolls of toilet paper and 4 or 5 boxes of laundry detergent

Sorry I jumped in but it's very important to plan ahead and write out beforehand what you need (so you don't overspend at the supermarket). Also I cut coupons on Sundays and place them in a coupon organizer. That way they are there when I need them. I also buy Bounty and toilet paper at Target or Kmart because they always have a sale.

ETS: Also now if there is a sale (Buy 2 etc.) I place the other item in the freezer for later.

I just subscribed to Newsday Anna...Thank yo

Re: TammyJill or Anna

Good for you Marcela!
Its SOOO Worth it! I would only want it on weekends but it costs MORE for just weekends, since thats a 'special' deal! and I still have the 'deal' from last year! I pay only $1.25 a week! and its going up to $1.35 in January and eventually, a few months later, EVERYONE (even me ) will pay $1.99, which is still not bad at all.
If I use ONE coupon per week, it pays for the subscription

Marcela, not all supermarkets in Queens double coupons... ask around. Most of the Waldbaums and Stop&Shops should.

Re: TammyJill or Anna

Marcela - I am sure you know this but the Waldbaums in College Point (just past target) doubles coupons. I am not sure about the one on Francis Lewis & 35th. If you find one that doubles that's closer, can you let me know?

Re: TammyJill or Anna

Hi Suzanne
I get the pennysaver on saturday and pull out pathmark, stop and shop and waldbaums
I DO NOT even LOOK at KiNG Kullen except to SEE IF THERE is a 5 or 10.00 or 7.50 off coupon that I can use at Stop and shop or any waldbaums......

I read the circular and make a list for each store, if the list has only two things, I usually dont go there...... if I make the list and lets say I have Hellmans MAYO for 1.99 at waldbaums and then I see it for 1.79 at Stop and shop when all the lists are done, I cross it off the list where it is more.

I dont subscribe to Newsday, I just buy TWO SATURDAY EARLY editions of Newsday for 75 cents, so for 1.50 I get A lot of coupons! then I cut out coupons for all the things we use. I have this DOC It organizer that is organized by

detergent/laundry stuff
bags/wraps
cookies
cleaners
rice/pasta
etc....... then the coupons go in the proper place and I look at my list and go through my coupons to see if I have coupons for anything on it.

Double coupons are the best b/c you get items for free or for like 40 cents that are regularly like 2.49 on a straight sale.

Good luck!

Re: TammyJill or Anna

oh, my almost ten years of waldbaums experience LOL
kinda helps me know what a good sale is!!
like whenever you see the 20 pack of scott toilet paper for either 7.99 or 9.99 for example
get the limit of TWO when they run this sale!! they dont do it a lot and usually there are fifty cent and 1.00 off scott toilet paper coupons so you really save! and you always need toilet paper! LOL
craig tells me I am a good 'Hoarder(SP?)

and when tropicana OJ (T HE best ) is 2/$4.00
buy as many as you can
I always have like six or seven in my fridge!! and the dates are like february! trust me they will be gone by then, also my mom always said she pumped my dad w/ OJ, it does something to sperm! I read in some fertility books, men should drink a lot of OJ for the calcium, potassium, etc... increased fertility
so thats a win win all around!
