Sooooooooo I recently heard, some NYC teachers will also be losing their jobs next year.... Im getting nervous too bc they are going by seniority

What a mess - it's everywhere and every industry. Think of how bad it is if they are cutting teachers for God's sake. I will keep you guys in my prayers and hope everything works out ok for you. What a tough year for us to all be getting married...

I heard that if it gets really bad other teachers who are excessed from different schools can come and take your job if they have more seniority than you. Crazy!

YEPPPPPPPPP I just heard about this!!! It's called 'bumping' .... its insane!!! I just cant believe this!!!!!! Fh said I need to stop worrying bc its not going to do us any good... but how can I not????? What am I going to get a pink slip and then get married right after? UGHHHHHH!!!! Im in shock to be honest.....

What do you teach? I heard ELA and Math are pretty safe. I'm an ELA teacher and I've been teaching for four years but I'm super nervous. I love my job, I love my school. I don't know what I would do!

I teach 3rd grade... this is my 3rd year teaching... and I heard they are starting with the teachers that have been teaching 3 yrs or less. When the letters go out... I will prob be in that batch

I know right??? This is like the worst year to be getting married....

a) it's going to be even harder to pay for everything

b) no one will even afford to come to our weddings

I am in the same boat, this is my 3rd year teaching.
Who would have thought that the city may let go thousands of teachers when at one point they had a teacher shortage in the thousands...Teaching Fellows. Without that, I wouldn't even be a teacher right now. It is so crazy to think

Bloomberg said hes laying off cops and firemen too in his civil service rampage. I swear that man would drive his own garbage to the dump if it meant he didnt have to pay the garbage man.

I am a NYC teacher with tenure. I was determined to make this year my year to 'get the h@ll out of the city' while I was still young and go teach on long island...buuuuuut, looks like I'm stuck in the city for life. There's no way I am going to apply for a job on LI with this economy!!!

I know...did u go to UFT and AFT website and send the letter? Also, try to make it to the March 5th Rally at City Hall...if enough of us complain they have to listen! Maybe...they will just cut the people who are going to be in their 3rd year in September...let's pray.

this is sad news ... but honestly i cant worry about it! i like teaching and i hope that i have a job next year ... but there is sooooo much to worry about right now ... i dont think i can handle this ontop of everything else! just one day at a time...God has always provided before ... i know he is not going to throw me out onto the street now

i heard that if there were layoffs, it was going to be by attrition...retirees. i heard they are going to buy out the teachers closest to retirement.

The buy-out was a rumor.... I talked to a UFT representative who said not to believe the rumor. They are going to start with 3 yrs and lower.... ughhhhhhhh I am right on the edge of that = NOT SAFE from the chopping block

Im in NYC... but I think every district is going to take cuts one way or another... just do whatever you can to stay clear and try to fly under the radar. These are scaryyyyy times

I seriously thought if you were tenured, you cannot be cut no matter what. But if it's a city or NY state tax cut, does that mean no protection AT ALL?

Basically from what they told me, that if the city has NO money- then they can break contract and lay off teachers. Thats how they can get around it.

Its not really about shortage this time...its about not having the money to pay the teachers that are currently in place. With all the budget cuts, they have to get rid of teachers. I really hope they do something so that this doesnt happen because that could mean up to 40 kids inside ONE classroom.... thats insane!!!!!!!!! Bloomberg and his bright ideas
