I'm NOT trying to be a jerk, it's just that I've seen it posted A LOT where people want to know if it's a big deal to do calligraphy, hand write, computer print, or do labels on invites.
I am not posting my opinion, but here are 2 invitations that we recently received.
Wow, I always thought labels were ok - until now. Thanks!!!!!!!!!

Re: The difference (calligraphy versus label)
I always thought the address should be done in calligraphy more formal (IMO) , not a fan of clear labels...

Re: The difference (calligraphy versus label)
the thing is, I wouldn't think twice about the outside envelope. I rip it open anyway to get to the inside...I never cared how it was addressed. I mean, the calligraphy looks nice yes, but it's going in the garbage.....

Re: The difference (calligraphy versus label)
YOu can also print right on the envelope and save money on the labels! There are lots of programs that will do calligraphy fonts.

Re: The difference (calligraphy versus label)
I just wanted to shamelessy add that 'label girl' didn't know that the state should not be abbreviated on a wedding invite

Re: The difference (calligraphy versus label)
Honestly, I think the Calligraphy looks nice, but it's a total waste - who keeps the envelope? I don't even keep the invite! I would look for a great font and print on the envelope. It's cheaper and can at least be customized to your style... not everyone is a Calligraphy kind of couple. With all the money we spend on weddings, you should save the calligraphy $$ and treat yourself to a day at the spa! If Mom or whoever wants a special envelope, then get a couple done so those people have it and move along. Or if you have money to burn, do what makes you happy!
I don't see the big deal about the state. So it's abbreviated... and what? As long as it gets to you, it should be ok.
I think that we adhere a little too closely to old traditions (some that just aren't practical for some people) and it's unfair to hold everyone to your standard, simply because you chose to do something a particular way.

It shouldn't be so much about whether or not the envelope goes into the garbage...as much as it is about first impressions. IMO.

I agree too.
Actually most Calligraphers use the computer - so you can save some money and (download a free font) and do it yourself.

Re: The difference (calligraphy versus label)
I read somewhere in a wedding ettiquette book that an invitation should not be addressed with labels and that poor handwriting would be better than an label.

This is something that really bothers me about weddings in general. I am not rich or monied. I have a college education, but I come from blue collared stock. between the fh and I, everyone coming to our wedding is known to one of us in some way, and already know the kind of person each of us is. I don't think that their impression of us will change if we send them an invitation in which the address was not hand-written in calligraphy.
I am not saying that you are passing judgement on anyone, but I think we use things like this to do so on other women. I think it's unfair. What happened to 'to each his (or her) own' people do what they can and spend their money whereever they see fit. who are we to judge?
again, not directing this at you personally. JMO

Re: The difference (calligraphy versus label)
All this talk about etiquette cracks me up...because when it comes to labels everyone is but etiquette says....
Then...when someone talks about something else everyone says who even bothers with etiquette anymore!
I just don't get it... I had a friend use clear labels and her invites came out beautifully. She did not do them nasty like Suven's example. That person didn't take the time to match the ink, font, etc. like my friend did. I thankfully have a wonderful FSIL who has artistic, beautiful handwriting and just so happens to do calligraphy on top of that, so that's a huge bonus for me. If I didn't have her...I probably would curse away while getting jammed envelopes out of my computer.

Re: The difference (calligraphy versus label)
I am sure to get blasted for this but I am having a formal wedding with a formal invitation and IMO it cheapens the look and feeling when envelopes are printed on a computer. I CAN tell the difference and I just don't like it. I do not think it to be a waste at all if a bride chooses to spend money on calligraphy. Thats her choice. I happen to think that the first envelope that Suven posted is quite elegant and surely something I would consider for my own invitations.

I appreciate what you're saying and I certainly wasn't passing judgement - it was all JMO.
I don't come from money either and my DH & I saved and paid for our wedding, ourselves. We did what we wanted to do - not what ettiquette dictated. For us, the difference $$$-wise between labels and computer calligraphy was insignificant...we went with what WE thought looked better for US.
If we are talking purely financial reasons...it is even less expensive to just print right on your envelopes than it is to buy and print on labels - and, IMO in the end, the effort looks nicer.
In all honesty, I was responding to people who were using the garbage as an excuse.

That's exactly what I did with both the inner and outer envelopes. I picked a fancy font to print directly onto the envelopes. I just thought that with the price of calligraphy for both inner and outer envelopes for 125 invites was beter put to use on other essentail wedding stuff...
