The most TMI question I'll ever ask, but here it goes...

For bikini/brazilian waxes - regular wax or sugar wax? I'm looking into this to do in the next few days, but haven't done it before, and am scared shi*less of the PAIN lol.

I'm reading about sugar waxing at 'Shobha' in the city.

Anyway...any recos girls???

My waxer uses the very thick wax....best Brazilian I've ever had and I am crying just thinking about finding someone new in NY!

How PAINFUL is it really?

And the next question...is it a stupid idea for me to get it a week before the wedding, when I've never done it before, and will be on my way to the honeymoon right after??? I'm worried about irritation...

I get a little irritated the day of and that's it...my lady is literally an old Brazilian lady that brought Brazilian waxing to DC decades ago! She's amazing ( and like, 70?).

She is awesome. She uses thick wax - no paper strips. I think that is less painful

Honestly, the pain for me depends on the weather ( it seems to hurt more in the winter) and where I am in my cycle ( close to period seems to equal mucho pain)

Other than that....it isn't pleasant, but not that bad!

I'm watching videos of waxing (on an arm lol) from this place, and they use sugar wax + denim strips (thick ones). I'm just worried of irritation and also that I'm going to scream my lungs out during the process...

I have a friend who waxes people, I can ask her what her take is ... I'm too scared to go to her! LOL

You will be ok. Then you will love it and go every month

How long does it normally last? Atleast 2-3 weeks?

For me, almost 4 weeks

In the summer I go every 4 weeks, winter every 5-6 for general maintenance. Plus, if you let it get too long, it hurts like a mofo ripping it all out the next time. Best to keep it thinned out

Very helpful - thank you, Ali!

And a very TMI question now - is there a 'perfect' length that someone goes in with to make it a successful trip? lol

They should trim you prior to ripping your hair out, but they need like 1/4' to get a good grip

Oh, and the thick wax I'm talking about is technically called hard wax....the soft wax is what they use with the strips to rip it off. I am not a fan of that type of waxing- much prefer the hard wax

Take 2 Tylenol about 30 minutes before and it will help with inflammation. They also make 'prewax' creams that contain lidocaine. If you apply that also 30minutes prior to your appointment the area will be numbed up a bit.

Good Luck!!

Don't forget! The good waxers get booked up!

Definitely read yelp reviews on the waxer quality before booking. A bad first waxing experience can scar you ( mentally! Not physically!)

I went to J Sisters for 2 years straight!!!! THEY ARE THE BESTTTTTTTTT!!!!! 15 mins you are DONE! They seriously are great. I made the mistake of going somewhere else another time... NIGHTMARE!

ETA: It is going to hurt but I promise J Sisters are the best. Also if you go on a regular basis it will becomes less and less painful and the hair becomes alot less
