Oh, I meant to say, b/c it is so competitive, I think they were considering charging in the future - in New York magazine
Ahhh...I see! FH and I probably don't stand a chance for a June wedding!

Re: The NY Times Called!!
Congrats.
I have a question. Where is the 'competition'? Do you have to go to good schools? Do you have to simply get your submission in early? Do you have to have a 'fancy upscale NY wedding'. From what I have seen in the past, NY Times wedding announcements are very different than those printed in Newsday or more local papers - lmost sort of like a class distinction. Especially when they print the colleges that the bride and groom went to or what their parents do for a living. Anyone else notice that?

I do think we had an edge having gone to Ivy League schools, and my father has a high-profile job. You rarely see people who haven't gone to college at all, and it is mainly the more competitive schools. I was actually surprised we got in because it is like 'Mr. and Mrs. X are neurosurgeons and met while doing a joint operation on conjoined twins...' But maybe that is more the readers of the NY Times who want to get in and submit early enough and according to the criteria?
ETA: I wouldn't call my wedding fancy...I mean, it was normal fancy, but not the Waldorf Astoria or anything.

The regular wedding announcements are no charge but they recently launched a section in which you can spend big $$ to guarantee your announcement gets in. But the section is clearly labeled as different from the free/more prestiguous 'Weddings' section.
Congrats Randella! Very exciting. Btw, did you have a special photographer take your photo or just the one you're using for the wedding?

I was going to say that education did have a role. I went to two private universities as did FH and they were not Ivy League. My brother went to a state university and makes close to $300,000 a year working a very prestigious job. My sister went to IVY grad school and she is a teacher (so am I). My other sister is an attorney. So it makes me wonder if my sister who is IVY educated would have stood more of a chance of getting her announcement in as opposed to my brother with the more prestigious money-making job and less fancy education. I don't think I would consider placing an ad because, based on my colleges, I'd probably get rejected and thus it would be a waste of time.

FH and I did not go to Ivy League schools- although he went to a good school and I went to a good SUNY.. and I have seen lots of people I went to college with in there.. I think it's just the luck of the draw..

I don't know, I think it is a combination of your background, education, parent's positions, etc. It really didn't take long to write up the three paragraphs so I wouldn't consider it a big time-waster anyway. I actively did not want my announcement in Newsday, so the NY Times was the only publication I cared about. But, I don't think it is random--some factors are definitely weighed more heavily than others.
