They Found the Driver who killed JoAnna Berggren!!
(03/14/04) SHIRLEY - Police say they have arrested the driver who struck the car of a popular Shirley music teacher and left her to die. JoAnna Berggren was killed in January. Cops busted hit-and-run suspect Chester Cunningham of Mastic (pictured), charging him with leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident. Detectives say the 39-year-old landscaper was driving a stolen Verizon Jeep when he plowed through a stop sign at Lexington and Tyne Roads in Shirley and slammed into Berggren's car. The impact killed 29-year-old JoAnna and seriously injured William Berggren, her husband of five months. Cops say Cunningham then fled on foot.
Berggren's brother says the family is too distraught to speak on camera about the arrest, but he issued a statement saying nothing is going to bring his sister back, and the family wants Cunningham prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Cunningham is also charged with possession of stolen property. Police say he also has a record of several DWI and larceny-related arrests as well as other convictions.
