I really hate when they put a tip jar out, though! I may tip them beforehand (I will ask the hall if they share the tip).

that is tacky- most places don't allow that

I am going to tip them each $50 before hand-

Believe it or not, I've seen it at all weddings I've been to

My hall told me that either we tip the bartenders and the coatcheckers ahead of time, or they will put out jars.

I've worked in catering halls too- the bartenders and the wait staff always get ripped off.
that 20% you pay does NOT go to the servers - trust me.

My FH is a bartender in a catering hall. There should be NO tip jar...how tacky. It's nice when the groomsmen or one of the Dads give a nice tip. RARELY does the bride and groom give the tip. It's funny, because he can pretty much tell ahead of time who are tippers and who are NOT....I know if I go to a wedding we always give a decent tip to the bartender ahead of time, and this ensures good service all night!!

Because my FH works with everyone who will be doing our wedding we will have to tip everyone VERY well, we started that jar in a house a LOONG time ago.

Yes....we are tipping the chef ..gotta love the service industry!

Same goes for the wait staff. They say they're included, I worked in three different halls and never saw any tips either.

SOOOO not doing that...Sorry.
Thats what the 18% gratuity is for..
Same goes w/maitre d....the BM told us his tip is included in there

NOTE: THIS IS ONLY MY OPINION - so no attacks okay???

Now, I worked in a restaurant as a hostess, server, and bartender, so believe me I understand completely how much they rely on tips.

If the bartenders are included as part of the waitstaff and included in that 18+++% as stated in the contract, why does the bride and groom have to 'suffer' per se b/c the catering hall does not take care of them? Isn't this something that should be taken up with their managers? It's for their own/best interest to do so rather than guilting the bride/groom into this?

most bartenders don't get a cut of the gratuity. if you don't have a problem with it and don't want to tip them directly, your guests can choose to tip them themselves when they get drinks.

The gratuity pays the salaries...a tip is a tip, if you like the service tip them, if you don't...then don't. However happy bartenders, makes for happy guests. Actually it's the wait staff that gets gyped more than anyone, we are tipping everyone independently. Believe me if you give it to the matr' de to split....it goes nowhere but THEIR pocket. It's all personal choice, I prefer to have a happy crew working my wedding!
