To Airbrush Tan or not

Original post by MrsHtobe

I'm contemplating getting one of those airbrush tans before my wedding. I'm VERY fair skinned and I'm scared of blending in with my dress LOL. . . .I can't fake bake because all I do is freckle and burn.

Would you look into getting the airbrush tan or just leave it alone? If yes, does anyone have any good recommendations and / or prices? I've never seen pictures from anyone as light as me after they got it done. . .

Thanks!

coleen my MOH does spray tanning all the time ... i can ask her later where she goes and let oyu know!

That would be great Tanya!! (is your MOH Lauren?)

I'll try spray tanning and if I dont like it I'll try tanning in a bed. . .maybe I'll have more luck in a newer bed or something.

Thanks girls!!

definitely try a newer bed but just a few mins, i do the highest bed but also for a long time lol i do 17 mins, but if you go to beach bum the max is 12...for you i recommend between 5-7 mins, the diamond level bed at beach bum makes you so dark from just 1 time...I normally go somewhere else bc fh's friend owns a tanning salon but sometimes i go for that bed at beach bum

i am SUPER pale - natural blondewith blue eyes and i have some freckles on my face......

i used to love tanning salons and the sun and used to get a real tan all the time even though i knew i should be avoiding the sun/tanning beds because my mom was diagnosed with skin cancer (melanoma - the deadly kind)

sooooo now because of genetics and tanning i have had almost 10 biopsies on irregular moles - (where they remove the top layer of the skin and biopsy it) once one of the biospies came back bad so they had to go back in and remove a lot more of skin to be safe and i had a really bad scar that i had corrected but its still really bad......and i have lots of other scars from the biopsies....all the moles that had to be removed looked like regular beauty marks.....

SO for the last two years i have been trying to avoid the sun......i use SPF at the beach and I do not go tanning anymore.....i used to think it was ugly to be pale but if you look at girls who regulary go tanning you can see the difference in their skin - uneven skin tone, dark spots on their faces, they have wrinkes at 25 and they look older and weathered AND tanning addicts dont realize how ridiculous they look b/c there is such a thing as too tan!

but anyway be kind to your skin.....you should avoid the tanning salon if you can......but to be totally honest i have a feeling i will go to the tanning salon before my wedding so that i am not ghostly pale on my honeymoon and so that i can build up a tan - even though i shouldn't be doing it, i want to look great on my honeymoon - and vanity is the reason sooooo many people get skin cancer

what i am getting at is that Airbrush Tanning can be great! i have gotten way darker with an airbursh tan than i ever gotten from hours in a tanning bed.....the only thing is that it doesnt last that long - it only looks good for about 3-4 days and it looks a little gross when it comes off.....i went for my engagement pictures and for my engagement party so check out my albums.....the place i go to is in staten island - and an actual guy sprays me while i am in my underwear if i had $$ i would seriously go every week - but since its expensive i buy a pacakge of 10 tans and save them for special occasions! you should try it out! good luck!

i agree that ppl shouldnt go CRAZY...i actually had stayed out of the sun for about 4 years, maybe a little more no beach, no tanning or anything...this year i started tanning around the summer time and have been going ever since. In my head i say ok you stayed out of the sun for years so this will be ok lol. After my wedding i'll stop...i also skip weeks so i dont get TOO dark

Future Mulligan - you're tan looks awesome in your engagement pics (you look beautiful!) I'd go to staten island if I knew they were going to do a great job (even though I'll be mortified doing it in my underwear LOL) What is the name of the place and how much does it cost (FM if you don't want to post) Thanks so much!!

Espo - thank you too! I plan on trying the bed and the spray!

I am very pale too, and it takes a lot for me to get even the slightest bit tan. I don't think it's worth it --- my dad had a cancerous mole removed and I'd rather not have the same thing down the road if I can avoid it.

I've used self-tanner before and might consider doing spray tan but I'm not even considering going 'tanning'

do it once before the wedding, like even now to test it out...pay attention to your skin make sure youre not burning, if you feel it just get out of the bed, also use a newer bed but not the highest one

Re: To Airbrush Tan or not

the place is called naturally bronze and there is a guy that does it named Mike - he has different colors some really dark and some really light.....next time i go (it will be for my boudoir pics next month) i will post a pic of my tan line - you will be SHOCKED when you see how pale i am and how tan he makes me! after he finishes spraying me i put lotion on a tissue and wipe off my fingernails and toenails and then when i get home i wash my hands up to my wrists and rinse off my feet up to my ankles - because they can become to dark if you don't do that (i have gone sooo many times that i know all the tricks so that it looks perfect) then i go to bed - when i wake up in the morning i scrub my feet and ankles again and then shower and put on tons of lotion and it looks great!

yeah, here is info i found, not sure what other chemicals are in there.

Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is the active ingredient in sunless tanning lotions and spray-on tanning. It is listed as safe for use by the FDA, although it was found lethal when injected in large doses into rats. While there is no know skin toxicity, it can cause allergic contact dermatitis. In 2003, the FDA released a statement of position cautioning consumers of spray tanning to take precautions regarding the 'unapproved' use of DHA around the eyes and mucous membranes and to take special precautions to avoid inhaling or ingesting the fine mist.

Since it is difficult to avoid exposure in the manner in which DHA is not approved, as a spray or mist, the FDA suggests that consumers ask the following questions when considering commercial facilities where DHA is applied in this manner:

well with just about anything theres chemicals in it: Depends if you have sensitive skin and how its done, there are some places that use natural spray tanning

here is something else i found

The reason I eventually set up and took notice is because I developed an allergy to spray tan in my own salon.

I was totally devastated. Due to the nature of the job, I had to be tanned all the time, but every time I spray tanned, I got a rash on the insides of my arms and behind knees, I itched like crazy and could not stop scratching! That is when I finally took a good look at the ingredients of self tanning products that I was using. Which is funny, I suppose, because I read every label on stuff I eat, but I would ignore things I put on my skin!

(Did you know that if you have 10 minute shower in chlorinated water your skin absorbs as much chlorine as your digestive system would if you drank 10 glasses of the same water?- thats how effective our skin is in absorbing chemicals!)

What I found was a mile long list of ingredients 99% of which I have never heard of (and had great difficulty in pronouncing). It sounded more like a lethal chemical cocktail than something I would want to absorb into my body.

Amazing facts I discovered!

Major components of the spray tanning solutions (like DHA) were tested and FDA approved, but many others ingredients were not tested at all. Little known fact is that only 11% of all cosmetics that we use has ever had any tests done by a unbiased body. Some are 'tested' by the very company that distributes those products, but there is a whole lot without any tests.

That did not make me feel very comfortable.

no problem, i found one place that was natural tanning in the city, im sure there are others. Either way none of it is good for you when it comes down to it, whether its fake baking, laying out in the sun, spray...Just make sure you pay attention to your body and you're not overdoing it. ALSO keep in mind that if you are usually fair skinned, and ppl never see youwith a tan it might be weird to see you on your wedding day with a tan...you can ask them to put a shade darker foundation make up, that might work..

Its funny bc i was so against it but Fh got me into it lol and then i remembered how i liked how i look with a tan
