To China or Not to China - MISTAKE ON POLL

My mother insists I add China to my registry because I have so many little $20 things on my registry; this is because FH and I don't live together and have NOTHING. Since my registry is so long of everyday items, I didn't feel right about asking for china, although I did find china I liked for a reasonable price. My question is, should I get the blue china at $59.99 for a 5-piece set OR get the silver china for $199.99, which is a COMPLETER SET of 8 place settings, an oval platter, and a vegetable bowl??? 8 is our number, so it would work out perfectly. I don't care that much about either, so I figured I'd choose the cheaper. So the Blue China is MORE expensive than the Silver China. FH doesn't want China all together. OPINIONS PLEASE!

-------------------------------------------------------------------
I MISWROTE THE POLL! It's not $199.99 for an 8-piece setting, it's that price for a COMPLETER SET of 8 place settings and 2 serving dishes. Sorry for the mix up

Re: To China or Not to China

I would DEFINTELY register for china. And, I would go with something more expensive, believe it or not. China is something that you will always use.... think about it... it will be the dishes you serve holiday dinners on for the next 30 years!!! My place setting is $119.00 PER SETTING! anywhere between $80.00 and $120.00 is average... unfortunately, i am on the higher end, but most people expect you to register for your place settings and people will buy them for you. the recommended place setting to register for is 12.... you may nto get all 12....) It's expensive, but worth it and something you will always have and can even pass along to your children... My parents still use the china they received at their wedding 34 years ago... Key is to pick a timeless pattern.

Also, get peopel to get the expensive stuff! you and FH can always buy the $20.00 bowl on your own. China you will be less likely to buy when you get married, have kids, on a budget, etc.

Re: To China or Not to China

My China is $129.00 per place setting not including a soup bowl!!!

And I already received 3!!!! and I didn't have an engagment party... I just think that is what most people look for when they look at a registry...

I mean if yuou don't want it... then don't get it. But that was my #1 thing I wanted... and so far the only things I have gotten!

Re: To China or Not to China

I like the blue. I;m not doing china either, as FH is a PHd student and between his internship and post doc, we'll be moving around a lot. So we're doing what Lenox calls all occasion china. It's slightly fancier than every day, but not as fancy or expensive as fine china. Something to consider!

Re: To China or Not to China

I don't plan on registering for China either. My mother has never used her china once. I just think it's a waste of money. I'd rather people spend money on things I am going to use.

Re: To China or Not to China

at first we werent going to but fh wanted it. so after we talked about it, it was good desicion to register for china. i would go with the blue, you ll need 12 thats the right number and its something you will always have and can pass down. and the price isnt too high at all. definately do it. but if you both really dont that dont. if really up to you two

I agree. We're still debating if we'll register for china or not. It kinda just seems like such a waste. We were thinking of reg for everyday stuff and then another set of plates that are a little fancier, but not in the china realm. But the jury is still out on that one.

If you don't think you'll use it, then reg for other stuff that you will use. And if you run out of big things, then reg for honeymoon stuff! JMO

Re: To China or Not to China

I'd go with the silver set.... especially since you said you don't live together.. that would match any decor... its more neutral.

Re: To China or Not to China

After thinking about I have changed my mind. I originally voted the blue, but now I think the silver. I heard that your china should last a lifetime if you use it on occassion and properly store it. Get the more expensive stuff.

Re: To China or Not to China

I like the blue one - it's different. We are not registering for China only because both of our grandmothers left us with a set of china so we actually have two full sets of china, which actually kind of match. However, if you don't want to register for it don't! Do what you want!

I voted to register for the silver set. China is a great thing to have. It's something you'll use for years and years.

Definitely to china and if I were you I would go with the complete set. With it you guys can host some holiday's at your house on the 'fine china'
