I think it all depends on the family. If your parents have the money to pay for your wedding then they will but if they do not have disposable money like that, then I feel it would be very bad etiquette to ask them to pay for things. All in all, I would let them offer and if they do not, then you know you are going to be paying for the bulk. I find it very very rude when people ask or tell their parents what they want them to pay for. (I've dealt with this situation before and it made for a big mess) Final words: let them offer.

Re: Topic of Controversy
My parents and my FIL both contributed some money for the wedding. FH and I are paying for the rest.

Re: Topic of Controversy
09 crashing. We are paying it ourselves. My mother and BMs were very nice and threw me a wonderful shower. I assume my FILs will pay for our RD.
I am covering the RH, limos, florist, dresses etc. FH is covering the other stuff like balances for the DJ, Vid etc. .
(background story: we are able to afford it now only because we cancelled our first RH and are booked at a much cheaper hall with much less guests). We also went with vendors we know in our area-which saved us quite a bit.
For those of you that are paying for everything yourselves, there are numerous things you can do to cut your costs/save money. I have been on a strict budget for over a year now with my wedding. FM me if you'd like any info

Re: Topic of Controversy
we put down the RH deposit but my mom generously agreed to pay the rest of the payments of the RH. She will also be paying for my dress and bridal shower. FH's dad i believe will be paying for the RD (im assuming since he paid for my BIL's)... and the rest of the vendors, honeymoon, etc is all us.

Re: Topic of Controversy
I should add that FMIL says she is paying for her guests and wants to try to pay for the RD - but she needs to see if FFIL will agree - they are divorced
My mom needed to pay for a BM dress and a flower girl dress and is basically paying for my shower

Re: Topic of Controversy
We're paying for everything. Though my mom insists on buying my dress for me and I believe FILs want to host RD since most of the OOT guests will be from their side, but this isn't definite yet.

Re: Topic of Controversy
We are paying for almost everything. My mom chipped in what she could and FIL don't really have the money to help out
