Tossing of the bouquet and garter....

Do people really do this anymore? I was talking to my mother yesterday about how I didn't want to do it and she was like, 'You have to! It's a tradition.'

How many of you girls are having this as a part of your wedding?

Re: Tossing of the bouquet and garter....

I think it really depends on how many single friends you have at the wedding. I don't have many so I might just give my bouquet to my only single friend or maybe give it to my grandmother since she is the only surviving grandparent on both mine and FH's side.

We aren't doing it. Don't care for many traditions - these 2 in particular.

Re: Tossing of the bouquet and garter....

I've been to weddings where they don't do it. I think it's totally up to you. Don't do something just because it's 'tradition' if you're not comfortable. In your mom's generation things were different. Now you can do, or not do, whatever you want and it's okay.
I'm probably doing it because my FH wants to, but I don't have strong feelings about it one way or another. I can tell you that I NEVER go up to catch the bouquet at other weddings !
There's no one way to do any of this anymore, which is great. Do whatever makes you happy.

Re: Tossing of the bouquet and garter....

THe anniversary dance seems like a nice way to go. Could someone please explain the specifics of this custom? How do they find out who has been married the longest?

Re: Tossing of the bouquet and garter....

We're not doing it. I always hated having to go up (as a guest). I just stood in the back and waited for it to be over. Of course we got the 'Oh, why aren't you doing it?? You have to' from FMIL and FSIL... Cuz I said so!

Instead we'll probably do a special mothers day thing (either dance, or recognition or something)

Re: Tossing of the bouquet and garter....

JennBaby-Whats the anniversary dance? BTW...your dress is GORGEOUS!

I am trying to think about all my single friends and family, and I just don't see it being a big turn out. Will have to talk to FI about it I guess.

Thanks ladies!

Re: Tossing of the bouquet and garter....

Ann. dance

All the married couples danced & the DJ asked who has been married 5 yrs or less, please step off the dance floor, 10 yrs, etc...until the longest married couple is left.

I then handed her my bo-k & her DH got the garter (after John removed it off me earlier) and then he put the garter on her leg!
Oh and Thanks!

Re: Tossing of the bouquet and garter....

Yep, I'm doing both!

I caught the bouquet at my best friend's wedding, and then I was the next to get engaged. So I think it's a fun tradition!

I am not doing it. I am giving my bouquet to my FH's Grandparents who recently celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary.

Re: Tossing of the bouquet and garter....

I refuse to do the bouquet toss. I hated it, and always found it humiliating, so FH and I decided jointly to do the anniversary dance. He has a lot of older aunts and uncles who've been married a long time, so it should be interesting.

Re: Tossing of the bouquet and garter....

I think we are doing the anniversary dance instead of the garter/bouquet toss. I always hated standing up there as well, plus I think that they take too long and stops the momentum of dancing at the reception. A part of me wants to have my turn after standing up like a dumbas* at tons of weddings, but I will get over it

Re: Tossing of the bouquet and garter....

I'm not doing it either. I don't like the garter part the most! I wish I could do the anniversary dance so one of my grandmas would win, but all of FH's and my grandfathers have passed away. The couple that would end up winning are friends of FH's parents and we're not that close to them and don't want to give them the bouquet. I may toss my boquet (and no garter toss) or I may give it to my mom or grandmother - I'm not sure.

Re: Tossing of the bouquet and garter....

Im doing the anniversary dance... I like the idea much better. I hate being singled out as one of the 'single' girls at other peoples weddings.
