Totally vain question about engagement rings

Original post by nrvbrd

Hi.

I think I have a beautiful ring- marquise cut 1.5 carats- my hands are small so it looks bigger than what it is.

I always tend to look at other ladies rings- some are bigger, some are smaller. It never affected me.

Yesterday I happened to be in an elevator with a woman who had a beautiful, round flawless diamond it must have been at least 3 carats. For the first time since I got engaged I was a bit envious. This never has happened to me.

Have any of you felt this way when you saw someone with such an eye catching ring?

Vanity comes in at this point because quite a few women say to me -when I am in the room with my ring they want to hide theirs, so yesterday I felt the same way as these women felt around me.

I had to laugh!!!!

Thrilled, we have the same ring size - 5 1/4.

There are bigger rings, smaller rings - I love mine. Once in a while I see a larger one and my mind wanders, but I love my ring. I still stare at it when no one's watching..

Re: Totally vain question about engagement rings

I'm totally happy w/ mine. It's just under a carat but DH picked out himself and its very high quality. I would not want anything bigger for the same reasons others have said. It's only a ring and money would be spent much better elsewhere - like a wedding day and house!!
But I'm also not a flashy person and don't own much jewelry, it's not my thing.

I LOVE my ring, because of where it came from. My nanny and grampy were married 51 years and when she gave the ring to Stevie to get reset she said she wished it brought us the same happiness and love it did them

No carat, or clarity could be better than that

Am I the only one that sleeps in both wedding band and e-ring?

Sassy -- I only take mine off if I'm doing something very very messy with my hands, or if I'm cleaning it! So its on 99.99% of the time!

I can't Sassy - It feels like it gets all grimy and yukky under my band on my finger while I sleep. I can't sleep in ANY jewelry, ever. I am also paranoid about dropping it in the sink while cooking/cleaning dishes so I take it off for that too.

I was just thinking the same thing. I never take my rings off! I am too afraid something will happen to them, and I get separation anxiety!!

On a side, I was whitewater rafting last week and the guide said 'I'm not swimming to the bottom of the river after those rocks!'.....meaning I should take them off. I said no way, I go they go and vice versa

I took mine off in Mexico when we went fishing/snorkling- DH said that I would attract barracuda.. I said- off they go! I usually wear them all the time. Except when mixing meatballs!

And not only is my ring 'small' by NYC standards- another just under 1 carat girl... my e-ring & wedding band don't even really go together.. my e-ring is sort of retro modern styled and my wedding band is an antique fishtail setting.. AND i wear them on the same hand.

Re: Totally vain question about engagement rings

I am happy with my ring. Sometimes I see bigger rings and get a twinge of anxiety, but then I realize that they may not be good quality. FH works with a girl whose e-ring looks like the size of nickel, but it is ugly. I think an e-ring represents where you were in life when you got engaged. If I wanted a huge ring, I could have waited for FH to save some more, but I didn't need a mini-flashlight on my finger. I can think of so many better things on which to spend our money. A guy should never have to hock his prized possessions and go into debt for 20 years to buy a diamond that will wow other people.

Side Note: My best friend said it best when she told me she didn't care if her boyfriend (now husband) gave her an tinfoil ring, as long as it was from him, that was what mattered.

Re: Totally vain question about engagement rings

I saw a woman with a 10 carat (400k) diamond ring at the salon one day.

I thought, wow I'm glad we bought the house instead of pending that kind of cash on jewelery! One woman thought the husband must want someone to mug and murder the woman

I think a 1.5 carat ring is very nice. Mine is 1.22 and I love it. I also have small fingers and anything much bigger would start looking toooo big. You don't want people thinking 'is it real'!

Re: Totally vain question about engagement rings

My ring is perfect for me. I love it because it fits my little hand with my little body. Kysha you know how tiny I am. I am not a lavish person either. I couldn’t have anything bigger than a carat b/c it looks hideous on my hand!

I know someone who has tinier hands than me and has a ring double the size than mine. And it doesn’t look good at all. Plus the way she got her ring doesn’t make me envious at all. They are dead broke. They really should have thought about that before spending so much money on a ring. It annoys the crap out of me when I hear people complain I am broke, I have no money, but you are walking around with a $10K+ ring. Sorry but I don’t feel sorry for you at all. All I think is you are really stupid to have done that. You could have gotten a smaller ring, with a better quality stone and have money to spare for you now.

Re: Totally vain question about engagement rings

This is a funny thread because yesterday I was in the elevator and this woman interrupted the conversation I was having with my co-worker to gush about my ring. But in the middle of it of saying how nice it was, she threw in 'even if it is small' I was blown away. the ring is 2.5 carats. And I have small hands (4 3/4 is my ring size). I couldn't believe it, I was so mad!
But you know, I love my e-ring and wouldn't trade it for any other ring EVER. Some women may have bigger stones but this is the one my FI picked individually, and that means more to me than anything else.

I love my ring too. It's a round solitare 1.25 diamond and even though I may get jealous when I see a HUGE ring once in awhile-I just remember how hard my FI worked to give me my ring and how beautiful it is. And that is all that really matters.

Re: Totally vain question about engagement rings

I never even notice other women's rings (or if they're even wearing any.)

I guess I have a substantial size stone and people tend to take notice, comment, or compliment me on it. I still want a bigger rock and it has nothing to do with what anybody else has.

Re: Totally vain question about engagement rings

I think it's human nature to look and sometimes see things that catch your eye and think...ohhhh what if I had gotten that....

I do it to...

In the neighborhood that I work, all I see are huge rings....and I think mine is a very decent size (2.15 cts.) and I still get envious..... (SOMETIMES)

Then I remember my FH down on his knee, opening that box and thinking....'That is the most beautiful ring EVER' and then I forget about those other rings....

Robymuse: HOW RUDE that woman was.....I would have said 'well my husband prefers quality over quantity' LOL!
Edited to add: we also have the same ring size (4 3/4) whenever my friends say 'can I try that on?' I say of course...but it usually barely fits their pinky's!!!

Re: Totally vain question about engagement rings

This is a funny thread
I look at other rings all the time- I'm a girl who just loves diamonds. However, when I see other HUGE rings, they're beautiful, but they don't mean anything to me. Only my ring has meaning behind it. A girl at work has a 5ct. ring, and another girl has a 3ct- & 2 others have 1.5-2cts... one girl who's NOT engaged said to me once- you've got the smallest ring in the office.
I love my ring & when FH says he'll 'upgrade' it later I tell him that's not necessary
I take her off to sleep too-

Re: Totally vain question about engagement rings

I am happy with my ring.
It is 1 carat and that is plenty for me!
I never wear jewlery let alone rings that sparkle so mine is enough for me.
But you are right, every once and a while I see some one with a ROCK and go OMG how does she keep her hand up!
