I think I have a beautiful ring- marquise cut 1.5 carats- my hands are small so it looks bigger than what it is.
I always tend to look at other ladies rings- some are bigger, some are smaller. It never affected me.
Yesterday I happened to be in an elevator with a woman who had a beautiful, round flawless diamond it must have been at least 3 carats. For the first time since I got engaged I was a bit envious. This never has happened to me.
Have any of you felt this way when you saw someone with such an eye catching ring?
Vanity comes in at this point because quite a few women say to me -when I am in the room with my ring they want to hide theirs, so yesterday I felt the same way as these women felt around me.
I had to laugh!!!!

Re: Totally vain question about engagement rings
I have a smaller diamond -it's a half carat, round, solitaire setting. It's exactly what I wanted. FH suggested we could go bigger, but I said no. I see a lot of girls with bigger diamonds. I just tell myself that (1) A lot more money is spent on a bigger diamond. We didn't spend a bizillion dollars, so we have money for things they may not, like our house, etc. (2) If it's too big, it may look bad or gaudy! (But that depends on how the person 'wears' it.) (3) My diamond's cut, clarity, and color are superb. A 3 carat diamond might have stinky other characterisitics, and might not be the quality of mine.
Also... a story to relate. Friend of FH's family had a huge diamond e-ring. One day she was on her way home from the grocery store. When she got home, she was forced into her home. She, her husband, and their kids were tied up and robbed because the person on line behind her at the store saw her ring and followed her home thinking they were really well off. She has vowed never to wear a diamond ring again. They were okay, but they lost a lot of physical items, and they felt so violated by this person.

Re: Totally vain question about engagement rings
In the beginning I wouldn't have wanted any other ring, but now looking for the wedding bands I do get envious of the larger rings (and my engagement ring is 2 carats). Mine is also low-set so it doesn't stand out as much, but after they walk away I'm fine with mine again.

Re: Totally vain question about engagement rings
It's just a ring. I understand how you felt, but as you said, it is a vain question :) :)
I have perfectly nice stone, but an even better man. So, a ring is just a ring, and it doesn't mean a thing other than that you get to get married to the guy you love:)
Besides, once I learned how diamonds are mined and the type of places they come from, I never want another one in my life....

Re: Totally vain question about engagement rings
I only see these wow types of diamonds once in a while, and usually its just a wow, nothing else. I helped FH pick my ring and we shopped together.
Given my petite size, I didn't want a huge diamond and am very much glad to have spent a bit more on my setting that some other people. So its only a 3/4 carat, but very good quality and most people think its a carat
But boy, I see ugly rings much more often than the wow rings. And the story about the grocery store robbery worries me too. I turn my ring down in the subway and don't wear it if going to a somewhat dangerous place.

Re: Totally vain question about engagement rings
I am not envious of anyones ring. I know what my ring is worth, and it's well beyond the price of it. The size never mattered to me, and though I wound up with a pretty decent one, if it was 1/8 of a carat I would have been happy. It's totally what was behind it. I had nothing to do with selecting it, FH went on his own an picked it out and picked out the setting, and the side diamonds himself. He created something for me and totally surprised me with it.
I've seen others rings, and while they are really beautiful (Theresa yours is GORGEOUS) I do not feel that I would want it instead of mine. I kiss my ring every night before it goes in the box!

Re: Totally vain question about engagement rings
There is always someone around with more of this or that or everything. I think its human nature to want more. So I dont think you are being vain or otherwise out of line.
Its how you handle this feeling that matters. If you said you were now pushing your FI to go out and trade in your ring for something bigger I would think you had problem.

Hi Jan..
I told Ron couldn't you have gotten me 3k... He laughs. He said someone will crack me in the face for my ring bc I am so tiny. I said they will have to kill me first..
I hope I see you B4 Oct at Fr. B's ....

Re: Totally vain question about engagement rings
I'm with Alina - I haven't seen many wow rings. I've seen a few nice ones, but in any case, I LOVE my ring! I still can't stop staring at it. We had it made for me, which makes it even that much more special to me. It does make me a little nervous to wear it though; I'm super-careful with it, and try to not let it show too much when I'm out on the street.

K!!!!!!!! I love your ring girl!!!
I love my ring... it's big, and it's set low so it doesn't seem AS big until you look at it.. it's also got big long baguettes on the side.. FH is already talking about 'upgrading' to a bigger one later on.. but I don't want to..I love it.. My bubba bought it for me.. that's all that matters! and I LOVE GAUDY!! lol I'll admit it!! you all saw me wedding band!!

Re: Totally vain question about engagement rings
My ring is 1.15 E color VS1 - it is very white and shiny and it is perfect for me. I am a big girl (5'10) but I have tiny hands (ring size 5 1/4) so anything bigger would have looked funny...but I do appreciate some nice bling and yes, I get mildly envious, but I also know that FH bought me what he could afford (he's a cop) and it is superb quality for its size.

Re: Totally vain question about engagement rings
Nrvbd, I have seen some and wonder what the heck, what are you doing with such large rings and I they are usually on some little woman, but I guess its a matter of choice. Wear your ring in good health.

I can't identify with you there - I do however find myself looking at other peoples wedding / e -ring combinations just out of curiosity really
I love my ring - its a perfect size for me, and I have fat fingers
