Until I can remember this word it's going to drive me nutso!!!!!

What is the word (I think it starts with an S) when a word has another meaning other than the objective meaning? (the word I am thinking of is NOT 'subjective')

An example is (I know this will make no sense but bear with me)

In Greek, the word for bucket is Kouvas.
Now, in Greek, if you call someone a Kouvas that means his head is empty and basically he's a dope.

WHAT IS THE WORD THAT DESCRIBES WHAT THE MEANING OF THE WORD IS IN THE SECOND EXAMPLE???

I've been trying to figure this out for DAYS and can't remember it lol HELP!

I will try to ask one of our editors or our copychief. I hope one of them knows this answer. If not, we're in the wrong business

Hmm... I have no idea and I'm pretty good with literary terminology. I would agree with Lunatrek that the closest thing to what you're talking about that starts with an 'S' is 'simile'.

Yup, I'm one of those anal-retentive grammar people. I'm pretty sure it's simile.... the whole 'like vs. as' thing stuck in my head when we learned about similes and metaphors in high school.

Where is Olgaki? Did we help at all??

I'm wracking my brain trying to think of a word that means using a foreign word as a simile. No clue!
It's got to be something Greek

It's not an 's' word - are you thinking of double-entendre?

Re: Until I can remember this word it's going to drive me nutso!!!!!

UGH It's none of those! lol But Hearing all those words again remind me of English Class. I swear I'm going up to the attic in 5 minutes to look for my old SAT Books and English books UGH
