why not suggest caramel? its lighter than bronze but not TOOO light
just tell her you heard horror stories where under the big flashing lights the champagne dresses look white...

It is very difficult sometimes to say something to the FMIL, because they always take it the wrong way....But, how about this 'FMIL, the other day when you asked about Champagne, well I was thinking about it, and it is awfully close to my Ivory dress, so it may look white in pics, but if you are ok with that, then go for it'
At least that way you have expressed the fact that you really don't love it, but you are putting the ball in her court. Oh, and make sure your FH is there when you say it, so it does not get twisted!
And for what it's worth, champagne often looks darker, like a taupe color...so try not to stress. You are thebride, all eyes are on YOU not FMIL

don't worry about telling her ... she hasn't found anything yet so it's not a big deal.
the sooner you tell her, the better.
if you don't feel comfortable telling her yourself, then have your FH say something.

I am the same way I always feel bad so I agree with what ever people say especially FIL's because I don't want to cause tension. I would tell FH but that is just the way I am, he could say to his mom that you are wearing ivory so don't you think it will be to close to the color of her dress JMO

just tell her you would feel better if she wore a different color. tell her your dress isn't white white (you don't have to tell her its ivory) just tell her its slightly off and you feel the color she picked is too close in the color family. if you dont have the voice for it, how about a text or email?
