VENT: Someone just made me feel really bad....Am I spending to much?

Original post by tiff940

I was talking about how much this wedding is costing me and someone (im not even going to go into who ) basically called me stupid (in so many words but not outright) for spending so much. She said why would I spend so much on a wedding when I dont own a house? And what if FH looses his job (not that we think he is but in the business hes in thats always a possibility). Anyway...she made me feel really bad and caused me to start second guessing all of my decisions. Did I take it to far? I feel that I have my whole like to own a house but this wedding is once in a lifetime. Houses will always be there...and even if FH looses his job(once again, not that we think this) we will both start working and though it might take a while but we will own one day. If FHs career keeps going as it is then we will own next year. I dont know...just wanted to know how you feel. I dont care about revealing my number-- its almost 100k! Yes thats 20% down on a 500k house but like I said before houses will always be around. Sorry for rambiling.

Honestly, it's your choice, you & your FH are planning the day you envisioned don't let someone try to knock you off your cloud

FH and I were planning on buying a this winter, but with the economy and the predictions for next year, it's too much of a risk to buy now, since the market is expected to drop significantly again. I don;t want to have a mortgage for a home paying more than the value.

it depends on your financial situation and what's important to you.

If you can afford to throw a $100k wedding and it makes you happy and YOU don't think you are spending too much, then I wouldn't necessarily say you are spending too much.

If you are throwing a $20k wedding but can only afford to have a $2k wedding and have to put it all on credit cards, then I would probably say you ARE spending too much.

It's all relative. Don't let other people bring you down.

IMO weddings only come once!!! Spend as much, or spend as little as you want. Houses come and go, weddings dont

ETS: DOnt let anyone bring you down on planning YOUR wedding. Dont listen to anyone, do your own thing

if you want to spend $100k on your wedding go ahead and spend it... I'm sure you've thought alot before deciding to spend that much. and your spending that much because you have it and your wedding is clearly that much important.. your friend no right telling you what to do

dont listen to her do what feels right to you.

I had a girl in my bridal party have a very similar reaction to something really dumb. I hired a DOC and she said 'i was irresponsible' with my money and that she would like to see me be able to buy and furnish a home within a year of my marriage.

Who is she to judge? This is the same girl who spends $1k on Frette sheets.

Go with your heart, you know what's best for you

I guess it depends what this person meant by telling you. I am a very outspoken person and have a tendency to say what I am thinking. I know people who are spending tons more on their wedding then I think they should, and if they ask me i tell them. (and i sometimes even tell them when they don't ask..lol) It shouldn't make you feel bad it's your life. I am sure there is a lot of things you do that others think is stupid, as i'm sure there are things others do that you think are dumb. I wouldn't take it personally. You chose to spend that much for a reason...go for it.

honestly its like an eye popper for me that amount. fh and I dont' make that unless we combined our salaries and times it by 1.5-2 years IoI But honeslty we are paying for our weddings ourselves nad yes we are doing it for around 15k and if you compair that to what we make i am sure it is compairable to what you and fh make.

People see the end number and do not associate it with what people salaries are. I realize after a few months of getting annoyed of people here who spend more then i, I am not rich nor am i comftable so why get annoyed at people who wear expensive items or do expensive things they make more therefore they can spend more.

Do what you feel is right. If you can do it with out loans or charging everything then why not spend the money on the most important day of your life!

Be prepared to hear more comments about the amount you are spending on your wedding. My advice...you are going to have to ignore it...or just don't tell anyone what you are paying for your wedding...

as long as you are financially able to do so then you shouldn't worry. If you are second guessing it and worrying then step back for a second and make sure that financially this is ok, but if it is then no reason to dwell...let others say what they want, its your life, your money and it doesn't effect them

IMO, for me- that is a lot of $ and I personally would rather buy a house, BUT its not my $ or my business or anyone elses.

Its YOUR $, YOUR business!

People are always going to put in their 2 cents whether they are rude or not.

If you are comfortable spending the $ and will be ok with buying a house in your own time, then no one else should care.

no matter WHAT someone, somewhere, will have something to say!!
I know eventually someone will say something in particular that will 'break the straw on the camels back' but, the truth is as long as you and FH are happy.... GO FOR IT!!

and yay for a another Leonards bride!

Stop telling people how much things are costing you. It's no one's business but your own and although they shouldn't make comments, they always will. People will always comment about money, as obnoxious as it is to do so. So unfortunately, the only way you're going to stop having anyone make you feel bad by those comments is to not let them know your budget. If they ask, politely tell them (with a smile of course) that it's really in poor taste to ask. That should shut them up.

They're just jealous because they WISH they had 100k so spend on their wedding... I know I am!!!

I am spending a lot on mine too... the Crescent is more expensive than some of the other places I looked at. But I'm paying more to get what I want. The setting is gorgeous and on the water and I know my guests will remember it. So I don't care- I want what I want and if I have live off ramin noodleas and sell all my old junk on ebay to make some extra wedding money to get what I want I will!!!! I'll worry about the house later.

100k is a lot of money to spend, but if u have it go 4 it, but dont go 4 it if you'll have ony 30k left over in savings afer the wedding.

A family member did the same thing to us. He told us that we are out of control in our spending and that we are splurging on unneccessary things. Our budget is less then half of yours, but he still made a point of making us feel as if we were doing something wrong. Just take it with a grain of salt. They think that they are helping but they aren't. It is just their opinion, don't feel bad
