Warning for all pet owners (Not Wedding Related).

Warning for all pet owners (Not Wedding Related).

I am so upset. For the past few days, my cat has not been eating and was throwing up. We brought him to the vet 2 days ago and they gave him some medicine. He still wasn't eating so I brought him back this morning. They said they needed to keep him to do some tests, so I have pretty much been crying since this morning (I have him since he is a kitten, me and FH got him about a year ago).

This afternoon they did x-rays and it turns out that he had a dime in his stomach! They did surgery about an hour ago and he seems to be okay. I just can't imagine how he could have swallowed a dime.

I just figured I would warn all of you that this is possible and if you have pets, don't leave any change lying around. I would hate for anyone else to have to go through this.

Hi there-
I'm so sorry to hear about your cat. How old is he?? I hope he'll be ok.
I understand what you're going through-one of my cats is 13 and I've had him since he was new. In the past 4 months-he has lost a kidney and has had to have major ear surgery (his left ear canal had to be removed). The total bill has been close to $8000.00 but it's worth it when you love something so much. Plus, this is not the kind of stress you need when planning your wedding!!!
Please give your baby a big kiss from me!!!

I hope your cat gets well soon. I have a dog that means everything to me so I know how upsetting it could be. They become such a big part of your life.

Thanks for your great advice. A few months ago, my kitty was acting funny and finally spit up a piece of ribbon (the shiny kind that you can curl with scissors). He was fine. Hope your guy is too, and soon.

With our prayers for a speedy recovery,

Michele and

Dexter

Re: Thank you for sharing

I am sorry to hear of your cat. I assure you he/she will be okay. My dog had two stones-one in his bladder and the second in his urethra. I noticed three weeks ago he started urinating in drops rather than a normal flow. For 2 days this happened and I took him to the vet to find out he had stones. My poor Benji had stones! After 1 day of surgery, recovery for 2 days I was a mess! I totally understand what you are going through. Trust me your cat will be fine. Did he need stitches? My dog had and boy it was a mission to get those things off. Now he is normal-no cone, urinates normal and is back to his old tricks again. He is even placed on a special diet at $1.50 a can! AAHH The bill for the surgery came to over $1,000 but I couldn't say NO to the surgery. He is our baby. I don't know what I would do with myself if anything is to happen to him. We are thinking of getting the insurance for him. We actually though of it when we first got him but said: Oh no our dog won't have any problems. Huh$1,000+ later I could have cut that by half if I had insurance for him.

If you have a pet that is in good health now but is reaching the age of 4+ I would recommend it. Realize that the insurance won't apply to previous medical situations. So if I decided to get the insurance after he had visited the vet and was confirmed with stones they would not cover the surgery and additional expenses. I actually tried!

Re: Thank you for sharing

Tara, I'm sure you little kitty will be just fine, but what a scare she gave you! Our little puppy, Madaket, gave us quite a scare about a month ago when she fell out of the bed!! She never yelped or even wined but she wouldn't use one of her back legs at all...not even to go to the bathroom (she did quite an impressive balancing act). I rushed her to the vet and they took some x-rays and they told me they thought it was broken and they wanted me to take her to a specialist because she would probably need surgery! The specialist couldn't do the surgery that day so he came in on his day off (labor day) and took some more x-rays. It turned out she didn't break her leg she just bruised it really bad and in just a few days she was running around like nothing had even happened.
The first set of x-rays were $400+ and the second set were $300+. Who knows how much the surgery would have been is she would have needed it! Where can you get insurance for them? Mom mom had told me about it but I don't know who to call.

Re: Thank you for sharing

I have all the insurance info at home. I have two companies information. I will post tomorrow for everyone. From what I recall it is really cheap, about $20 per month for basic coverage which entails, emergency surgeries, prescriptions, boarding if needed and a lot more. I think you have to cover a deductible but I am not sure. Don't quote me on this part. I have yet to understand my company's insurance program and I have been here for over 2+ yrs!

Pet insurance Website

Taralisa,

I hope your kitty feels better. We currently use this insurance company and they are wonderful to deal with. We have used this for both of our pets and have been extremely satisifed with their services

Re: Pet insurance Website

My cat over the last year has had recurring Urinary Tract Infections. All the testing has cost up to $1,000. Unfortunately, I contacted some Pet Insurance Companies and they told me... he had a pre-existing condition and it would be very hard to get him covered! Just like with people, insurance companies really drive me crazy.

He is now taking 1 pill a day, and it has seemed to help keep him symptom-free. It's been really rough though, he is like a baby to me and it is so stressful when he is sick. I know it probably sounds silly. Good Luck with your cat.

For anyone that has to give a cat pills, I got a great device from my vet - it's a pill gun. It is SO easy and less stressful for the cat!

Re: Linda-pill gun

Hey Linda-

Where can I get a pill gun? My cat needs to be pilled 3 times per day and missed a lot of meds because he spit them out. Any info would be great!
Btw-I experienced the same thing with pet insurance. My cat Creature is 13 and like people, they get harder to insure as they get older.

I am so glad your kitty will be okay. I get so upset when I see my Bemmer eating something she found on the floor- of course FH thinks I am over protective- but you have a great point. I need to resize my Bemmer photos and post them. I am a very proud Mom. :)

Sammy

I am very happy to report that I picked up Sammy from the Vet this afternoon and he is just fine! Thanks for all the support you guys.

P.S. Linda, one of my cats looks just like yours. Her name is Alley and we always joke that she looks more like a cow than a cat!
