Wedding 'mailboxes' or other ass't ideas to put cards in ...

Please help ... my FH & I are having a debate about the mailbox idea. He says that it's tacky & that he doesn't want to put one out. I said that It's a good way to keep your cards safe during the reception.

Are there any alternatives? What is everyone doing on this subject?

I thought the mailbox/birdcage idea was a bit much too. We ust used a big white basket and my mom put ribbons and flowers on the handles of it. It looked really nice.

your fh must be friends with mine. We had the same discussion about the tackiness of the birdcage. NOw I think we are just using a money bag my moh gave to us and having people just hold the cards for us ie FMIL, MOB etc......

Re: Wedding 'mailboxes' or other ass't ideas to put cards in ...

I am using a mailbox. My mom decorated it in white satin with flowers and bows in the colors the bridesmaids are wearing (sage). She put a bow over the lock, so you have no idea it is even there. It came out beautiful and I'll feel confident that the cards are safe without me having to carry them all night.

Re: Wedding 'mailboxes' or other ass't ideas to put cards in ...

We used a birdcage. Honestly, its not the height of tact - but we put it near our table so it wasnt like checks had to be 'deposited' in there for guests to enter (Ive seen the birdcages/mailboxes posted at the front entrance which I think is much worse)

We are so glad we had one because I was not about to carry a bag around at the reception and my DHs coat pockets are just not big enough to hold all the envelopes.

Jenhos, should I do a search on here to find out how to make it. I saw the site where Jennbaby got it from, I am a little lazy and will probably just buy it but I will first attempt to see if I can make it myself!!

Re: Wedding 'mailboxes' or other ass't ideas to put cards in ...

We are using a 'real' mailbox that my FI's Grandpa married when he had his own metal shop. My aunt is going to decorate it with tulle, ribbon, etc. It has a door on it, so when can open and close it to put in the cards in it.

Re: Wedding 'mailboxes' or other ass't ideas to put cards in ...

ABC here it is:

I went to Michaels and bought plain round boxes. (they are brown) 3 sizes. Each one smaller than the next. I cut the bottom off the smallest and middle size. I placed the small one on top of the middle one and traced around. Then cut a whole in the top of the middle one. As close to the circle you drew as possible but not right on it. Do the same with the middle box on top of the bottom. This allows the cards to fall to the bottm box. I painted them all white. Then glued the small box to the middle one and the middle to the bottom one. (you can glue the tops on the boxes for extra 'security' if you want. Then I glued flowers and ribbon on it to decorate it.
Sounds complicated but was actually easy.
Let me know if you need help!!!

Re: Wedding 'mailboxes' or other ass't ideas to put cards in ...

Thanks Jenhos, when you say don't cut right on the circle do you cut inside the circle or make the circle a little bigger than the circle that you drew? I am such a visual person I am actually lining things up as you described it so I can understand it. Thanks!!! It sounds reasonable, like I could actually make it!!

Re: Wedding 'mailboxes' or other ass't ideas to put cards in ...

You actually may want to cut a little bit insides the circle. You want the boxes to cover the holes you cut out. So you need to leave enough room to glue the box on top of the hole. Does that make sense?
God I wish we had drawing tools.

Picture that to be the bottom (biggest box) and the 'mouth is the hole you cut. The middle bos (which is smaller than the bottom) should cove the entire hole.

I think I am over explaining. Let me know if this helps. It didn't take me that long to do and I think it cost me under $10.

I just got the new Lillian Vernon catalog and they have a similar cake box type card holder. I was going to get it but I don't know about how many cards it'll hold.

Haven't looked at the Catalog yet but will check it out. Michaels sells boxes in all sizes. So you can go as big or small as you want.

One of my BM's wrapped a box up like a present and cut a slit in the top for people to put their cards in. It looked really cute.
