Have you ever attended a wedding outside of New York? I was wondering what your experience was! What did you find to be really different? They don't quite do it the same way...

Re: Weddings not in NY
There is nothing like a wedding in NY! and frankly, really we're the dumb ones because we're the only ones that get suckered into spending well over a $100 a head.
In New England, it's cash bar (that *****!)
In PA, my experience has been very light cocktail hour (just cheese, crackers, fruit and wine or beer) and sometimes a sit-down dinner, but more often a buffet (just my experience)
In the mid-west, lite on the cocktail hour... and PRESENTS (like what we would get at our shower are what you receive as gifts... cash gifts are not the norm).
In Ireland, only close family and friends are invited to the reception....and it's usually just dinner. the bride and groom pay for one drink for their guests and then you're on your own. more people are invited to party AFTER the dinner is done.

I went to a wedding in Colorado and it was a cash bar. I thought they were kidding when someone at the table said 'Do you want me to buy you a drink' and I laughed, meanwhile he was dead serious

LOL... thats why I wanted to do this post, I just think its sooo interesting how different it is in other places. I know cousins of my dad out west actually made their own food for the entire recepetion and didn't serve alcohol. When I saw the video it looked like it took place in a high school cafeteria...

Re: Weddings not in NY
Rhode Island - for my brother's wedding back in 1997...similar to NY but a bit more laid back...nice location on the water for probably half the NY price :) - everyone working at the place was sooo friendly
Cincinnati, Ohio for FH's cousin - similar to a NY wedding but felt more family oriented & less 'glitzy'....
Philly, PA - held in a hotel...very nice and relaxed
Melbourne, Australia - good friend's wedding outdoors in a garden, then nice small reception indoors..and she's from NY...very relaxed
I think they don't play the music so darn loud outside of NY...i like to boogy...but i can't stand when you can't have a conversation with the person sitting next to you!
going to a wedding in Israel in Nov - FH's best man...that should be interesting! He said weddings are really different there!

Re: Weddings not in NY
I was a BM in a wedding in Northern Maine (as in 2 hours away from the nearest restaurant for the rehearsal dinner!) her parents owned a B & B/lodge up there and the wedding was there. the BP stayed in the cabins and her parents made all the food and a dance floor and tent was set up on the lake. probably THE funnest wedding i was ever at! it's all about the people and atmosphere... a few kegs dones't hurt either

Re: Weddings not in NY
we just got back from a wedding way upstate. it was certainly different. cocktail hour was 1/2 hour long and there was only crudite and cheese. also, they closed the 'open' bar from 8-10:30. Only water with dinner! The food was good, but it was strange to me that they had the buffet tables set up on the dance floor. After dinner, at 10:30, the bar opened back up, they cleared off the dance floor, and then there was dancing. the hall was very pretty, but i guess when youre used to LIWeddings, nothing compares!

Re: Weddings not in NY
Typically they are not as lavish, but it really depends on the bride, groom and their families. I went to one in NH that wasn't all that different from an LI wedding. Also, I don't think they're allowed to have open bar, but the bride and groom started a tab and left it open all night so it was similar to open bar. I've also heard Boston weddings can be similar to LI weddings, but I went to one that was cash bar and was very very simple. My friends have been attending a lot of CT, RI and MA weddings and because the families have $$$ the weddings have been over the top. Some of them are 3-4 day events!

Re: Weddings not in NY
we almost had the wedding in CT. the only noticeable difference from a planning standpoint is that they still make you give them an exact entree count a week before the wedding. basically means you still have to list like chicken, fish, meat..etc. on the response card so the guests can tell u before the big day. i LOVE the ny restaurant style ordering at the table with menus and was wayy taken aback that they still do that in CT..but according to them its the norm at a lot of places!

Re: Weddings not in NY
in fl it was buffet style in a kiwanis type club...nice but not the norm ny wedding
i have friends down here who cant wait to see what a ny wedding will be like...they cant fathom giving money as a gift. they do brunch openings around here the next day...weird, i always thought gifts were for showers, money was for weddings...hmmmm

Re: Weddings not in NY
Not to sound rude, but I wonder if my friends and family from out of state realize what is appropriate attire, gifts, etiquette, etc. for a NY wedding. If they follow the traditions of where they are from, I think it might even be embarassing for them...

Re: Weddings not in NY
My best friend lives in Florida. Her wedding was very small, but nice. They had a cash bar (so not ok around here) and the reception was held in a tiny Italian Restaurant. We had a buffet dinner and then they moved some tables to the side to make room for dancing.
She sent me pictures of her sisters wedding, that I wasn't able to attend, and it was held at a more conventional catering facility, but half way through the pictures, people started showing up in jeans and tshirts!!! I asked what the deal was and she said that the bridal party and friends all brought clothes to change into so they could be more comfortable....WHAT?!?!?! First of all, I would NEVER allow this at my own wedding...Second, if I was in the bridal party and just paid X amount of $$ for a dress, you bet your bottom I'm wearing it ALL night.
Apparently, this is a popular trend in the south.
ETA-- My parent's attended my dad's step-sisters wedding in Chicago and it was just as lavish as a NY wedding. Maybe because they are NY transplants?

I've attended several!! Actually, I've never attended a wedding IN NY lol lol. I'm not from the LI area at all. I'm from Kentucky!
There is a mixture of weddings here. Some are very basic, laid back and others are very lavish! Just depends on the couple :)

Re: Weddings not in NY
My sister's MIL is from Minnesota. I felt really bad for her at the shower. She bought my sister this nice set of engraved toasting flutes. Something like you could get at Things Remembered. Very nice and heartfelt, but she felt bad that she spent so little money. In MN you literally buy one thing off the registry for the shower and one thing for the wedding
I went to a wedding in Maine and it was nothing like what we have in NY. The wedding was at a local senior center. They had decorated it with some tulle and flowers, but it still looked like a decorated gym. There wasn't really a cocktail hour, just drinks for an hour and a half while the couple took pictures. The DJ was also the MC and the videographer. There weren't any waiters at all. Just a buffet and a single bar.
I went to a wedding in PA that blew away every NY wedding that I've ever been to. The bride's father was the head rabbi at the temple so I think that they felt that they needed to show everyone else up. It was on Valentine's day and the floral arrangements were amazing. They also had a caviar bar and sushi during cocktail hour. I was so full after cocktails that I couldn't even eat my dinner.
