Weird thing that happened to my friend at a wedding

Original post by GinaZ

My best friend from Maine recently went to a wedding with her serious boyfriend (not yet engaged but happily living together for 4 years.) He was a groomsman and he knew a bunch of people there. She had met a couple of the people a few times, but most of them were in the wedding party. During teh reception, they ahd her sit at a different table than him!! She was sitting at a table with random people she didn't know, and he was sitting at the head table. She said it was the most awkward night ever! Isn't that weird!?

yeah this used to be the norm years ago, most people don't do it now but i think in other states some people still do, not everyone but still common practice

it is inconsiderate though

that's happened to me before, my FH was the best man and I had to sit alone with FH's family..which wasn't too bad...but although I wouldn't do this personally, my question is what other alternative is there for the Bride and Groom who want to sit at a dais with their bridal party?

If the bridal party isn't too big, they could sit with them and their dates. I guess it is harder when you have a huge bridal party.

Oh ya toootally forgot! My friend said the bridal joined the bride and groom half way through the first dance so she had to sit there and watch him dance with some other girl. Not a big deal, but she was left sitting alone at the table cus everyone else was dancing.

I think it definetely is an out of town thing. I went to a wedding in PA with FH and he was the best man. Seating was more of a free for all except for the dais.

I had to sit all alone and I didn't know anyone, I was sooooooooo uncomfortable.

I live in OH now and FH was a best man last weekend in his friends wedding. I only knew the bride, groom and of course my FH and they had a dais table but they were really nice about it and had any of the BP and their guest sit at the big table. The rest of the place was a free for all to find a table to sit at.

Same thing happened to me!! DH was in the wedding and sat at a table with the bridal party. I did not know ANYONE besides the bridal party and sat at a totally random table. It was AWFUL and I was bitter the rest of the night

Ya I would be p*ssed! I would not want to be a bride who has miserable people at her wedding.

Cash bars are extremely common outside of this area. They're not considered rude in most other areas.

I used to film wedding videos and I once went to a wedding that had to cost about $100,000 - they had about 5 rooms at a very exclusive country club in NC, probably 400 or 500 guests, everything was very elaborate... and there was a cash bar.

Weddings are sooooooo different everywhere else. I wouldn't dream of ever throwing any party where guests had to pay for alcohol - other places, it's the norm.

Tacky in my opinion -- but widespread in other areas of the country. I think most of FH's side will be shocked by our wedding. (He's from PA)

I know they are super common outside NY! But to me its like you are having a party and these people are your guests- shouldn't they include drinks? Im helping my friend plan her massachusettes wedding and all the places charge so much extra per person an hour to make it a open bar. Or you can get charged on consumption. Its hard to have a NY style wedding outside NY- it costs twice as much!!! I think we are all getting a good bang for our buck!

When my dad saw what my price per head included, he asked me why it was so cheap. My dad asked me WHY IT IS SO CHEAP!!!! I have never heard him say such a thing before!!! hhahaha.

Gotta love the concept of a dais. IMO they're completely ridiculous and inconsiderate to the members of the BP. Why even bother inviting members of your BP with a guest if they can't even sit together????

Re: Weird thing that happened to my friend at a wedding

that *****! what's really weird is some people have acted surprised when FH and I tell them that we are going to seat our bridal party with their dates instead of at a table with us. I guess that's the way wedding's were traditionally organized. but who wants to spent the whole night at a different table away from their significant other?

Understandably it was awkward.. but where did she think she should sit?
With the BP at the head table?

she shouldve realized she wouldnt know anyone there and that since her BF was part of the bridal party she would be alone a lot.
This is pretty typical when people have tradional head tables.

This is why I wont do this.

Re: Weird thing that happened to my friend at a wedding

FBIL actually called FH to ask him NOT to seal his wife at a different table than him. When FH said that we would never, ever do that, FBIL replied that some people seat the BP/GM together and their dates seperately. Very weird.
