Weird thing that happened to my friend at a wedding
Original post by GinaZ
My best friend from Maine recently went to a wedding with her serious boyfriend (not yet engaged but happily living together for 4 years.) He was a groomsman and he knew a bunch of people there. She had met a couple of the people a few times, but most of them were in the wedding party. During teh reception, they ahd her sit at a different table than him!! She was sitting at a table with random people she didn't know, and he was sitting at the head table. She said it was the most awkward night ever! Isn't that weird!?

that's happened to me before, my FH was the best man and I had to sit alone with FH's family..which wasn't too bad...but although I wouldn't do this personally, my question is what other alternative is there for the Bride and Groom who want to sit at a dais with their bridal party?
If the bridal party isn't too big, they could sit with them and their dates. I guess it is harder when you have a huge bridal party.
Oh ya toootally forgot! My friend said the bridal joined the bride and groom half way through the first dance so she had to sit there and watch him dance with some other girl. Not a big deal, but she was left sitting alone at the table cus everyone else was dancing.
Ohh yeah, fh had to dance with the MOH too but I didn't really mind too much, she definitely wasn't his type and she had a man....not that I dont completely trust FH, I'm just stupid and petty like that sometimes

Oh ya haha and she said it was a cash bar!! What a horrible wedding! haha.
Cash bars are extremely common outside of this area. They're not considered rude in most other areas.
I used to film wedding videos and I once went to a wedding that had to cost about $100,000 - they had about 5 rooms at a very exclusive country club in NC, probably 400 or 500 guests, everything was very elaborate... and there was a cash bar.
Weddings are sooooooo different everywhere else. I wouldn't dream of ever throwing any party where guests had to pay for alcohol - other places, it's the norm.
Tacky in my opinion -- but widespread in other areas of the country. I think most of FH's side will be shocked by our wedding. (He's from PA)
I know they are super common outside NY! But to me its like you are having a party and these people are your guests- shouldn't they include drinks? Im helping my friend plan her massachusettes wedding and all the places charge so much extra per person an hour to make it a open bar. Or you can get charged on consumption. Its hard to have a NY style wedding outside NY- it costs twice as much!!! I think we are all getting a good bang for our buck!
When my dad saw what my price per head included, he asked me why it was so cheap. My dad asked me WHY IT IS SO CHEAP!!!! I have never heard him say such a thing before!!! hhahaha.
see thats the problem, alot of places outside of NY charge insane prices if you wanted open bar...Alot of places are like $10 per person per hour, which can get quite high especially if you have a big guest list.
The thing is in other states they don't really have wedding catering halls like we do here. This girl from boston was confused by my hall wheni showed her pics, she was like what type of place is this? and said all the weddings she had went to were at country clubs.

Understandably it was awkward.. but where did she think she should sit? With the BP at the head table?
she shouldve realized she wouldnt know anyone there and that since her BF was part of the bridal party she would be alone a lot. This is pretty typical when people have tradional head tables.
This is why I wont do this.
that was the point, that they shouldnt have had a head table not that she wanted to sit at the head table.

This happened to me and FH at my friend's wedding last year. It was horrible for FH and we decided right then that we wouldnt have a head table and we'd sit the BP with their dates at their own tables.

it is weird - i have that happen to me also - with my ex...i went to his cousins wedding and i had to sit next to his mother...and at the time she was having issues with us dating because i was not a greek girl... and i maybe saw him 4 times the whole night - he was with the bridal party at a different table on the opposite side of the room! it was quite strange!

& the BP used always sit together at the dais years ago (10-15yrs). Since then sweetheart tables have been the norm, leaving the BP to sit at regular tables with significant others.

I think it's just a matter of habit. Something that seems weird to one person is normal for another... If you're used to weddings with a long table for the BP then you expect to be seated somewhere else.
An effort should be made though to seat the dates/spouses of the BP with people they know and definitely close to the head table.
