Were You a Bad Teenager?????

Original post by aliasPook

I need help. I am desperate. My FSIL is 19 years old, and I have known her since she was 13. Once she started High School, she stopped going to school. SHe cut out almost every single day. At 16, she dropped out and passed her GED by one point.

SHe is always in trouble. Her ex boyfriend stole her mothers car keys and stole the car last June, we have had the police knock at our door (we live in the basement apartment) to tell us that one of her friends called 911 from her mothers apartment as a prank during one of her house parties, she has had about 6 jobs, but no longer than one month sat each becasue she can not wake up on time, and she will call in even as soon as her first week. She sleeps all day long, and when she wakes up, she is the biggest b*ithc, and you can't even talk to her until she is ready....

SHe has attempted college during 4 different semesters, and failed every single class with the exception of two. Her father had wasted so much money on her education, as well as teh poor guy has to pay for her COBRA beacsue she is not a fulltime student.

We are all responsible for teh way she acts becasue we have all contributed through the years to making her the irresopnsible brat that she is. But at 19, I was working a fulltime job for $6.00 an hour and a fulltime student... I know it's not right to compare, but I think if she is not in school, she should still hold some type of job...

Ok, so here is teh best part.

Since she was 17, she has worked on and off in my office. They let her go three times already, but when tehy are desperate, tehy bring her back for a day or two. I was able to get her an office job in teh company downstairs from me for teh same pay, and all she has to do is file and answer phones...
On Monday, one of teh girls in my office picked her up and drove here here. SHe was on time, and she did a great job.
On Tuesday, I woke her up at 7, and she was suppsoed to get picked up at 7.50. SHe fell back asleep (I have had to come in at 7.00 all this week, so I can't drive her...) and she missed her ride. SHe had to take car service, it cost her $30.00 and she was 45 minutes late.
Today, I woke her up at 6.45. SHe tells me taht she will be waiting fo rher ride at 7.40. I said did you tell Jennifer, the girl taht drives her, that you will be waiting for her and you need a ride? No, I was goign to call her now. Ok Lauren~that's a good idea considering she is doign YOU a favor. Our house is out of the way. So at 7.00 she calls and says she can't get her on teh phone. I try, I can't get her. I yell at her and tell her I am leavign my office and I will get her. Bear in mind, my office is a half an hour away from her house, and with traffic, it'll be liek 45 minutes. I don't even get a thank you!!! I get an OK! At 7.15, my phone rings and it's Jennifer, who tells us that she spoke to Lauren three times yesterday, and Lauren never mentioned taht she needed a ride.
SO I drive back to work, where I am half an hour late.
I wouldn't care if she lost her job if I wasn't teh one to get teh job for her as a nice gesture from this company. We do a lot of work woth them, and I have a great relationship with them. HOW HARD IS IT TO JUST BE UP ON TIME!!!

Were any of you girls like this? How did you finally grow up??? I was also a terribel teenager, but I was also responsible and intelligent and did well in school and at her aga, I worked and I wasn't a burden on people.

How did you finally grow up? I am at teh verge of tears, this is putting a strain on Brian and I.

It is not just you that needs to have tough love for her Laurie. It is her mom, dad , aunt..you and Brian. All parties involved really need to talk together and agree on some sort of plan. There is no reason for her to change if she gets food, clothes, shelter and money without having to have responsibility. Hey, if I got all that from them... I wouldn't change either . It is sad but if something doesn't change she will be like this forever. It is also going to cause problems between you and Brian. She is not your child and should not be your responsibility. You will be newly married soon and should be concentrating on each other..your life together....NOT TRYING TO RAISE HIS SISTER!!!

Sorry this really bothers me!

I agree. Everyone has to band together to make this work.

Alias when she steals $600 from you, what will you do? Give her more?

Just playing Devils Advocate. I had a friend like that, her mom eventually gave her up to the courts at 16yrs old.

She didnt die, she actually went back to school at 21 gor her BA, has a great job, has a great apt in Long Beach.

Sometimes the less you give the better.

I've said this so many times in different situations but it still holds true: the best decisions are the most difficult ones!

I think that she should wallow in her own mess. I am a strong beleiver in making people '**** it up' I get so tired of people trying to make thing better for people that screw up. If she doesn't get to work, don't bust your chops trying to get her there. Eventually she will learn and figure it out! I come from the old school of hard knocks!

Re: Were You a Bad Teenager?????

This is a hard situation... I would have NEVER thought about even swearing in front of my parents when I was a teenager...don't get me wrong...I was out doing things I probably shouldn't have been doing, but the folks never knew about it!!

I think you need to cut her off...don't help her out anymore. I understand you fel you have to do cause it's a family memeber (soon to be) and your supposed to be there at all times, but this is unexectable! Have you considered speaking to her friends? Their families??

Try having a real-deal sit down with her...Point out the fact that she came from a good loving family and the stunts she is pulling is just out right making HER look like trash. Who steals money from their mom???

I think a therapist is needed to see what the root of her problem is.

Sometimes young people just need their eyes opened.

I hope it works out for you!

You are all so right...I Brian and I practically raised this girl, her mother has always had the 'not my child' attitude with her, and this is what it has turned in to. SHe was always doing doing doing and she turned her in to a monster. I just know who her firneds are, and I think a good a$$ kicking would be better than letting her live with her trashy friends. SHe is probably staying at her ex boyfriends who is a slimeball and is tellign us that she is with a girlfriend. I just know that by being kicked out, she is going to wind up digging herself in to a bigger hole.

Re: Were You a Bad Teenager?????

Well that sounds like the problem with her...she was not getting the attention she needed from her mom. Not that I'm blaming her mom, but she is acting out for some reason...kids need attention.

I think you should let her know that she is loved and valued. That you and Brian (??) are truly concerned about her well being and you just want to see her succeed in life. Let her know someone cares.

Re: Were You a Bad Teenager?????

You need to ask her what she really wants and that you can only help her so far. the rest is up to her. Explain to her that her 20's are around the corner and that before she realize it she will be 21, 22 and where will she be?

Sometimes someone needs to wallow in their mess till they cant stand the smell of it anymore.

Help is out there and its up to them to go and get it.

Alias I wish you the best , maybe try and suggest therapy..

But my sister's Nephew (by marriage) is 22...doesn't work, STEALS from all of them, is in trouble with th cops ALL the time, has been to JAIL...so on and so on is the same way.

As a very difficult child myself....My heart goes out to you. I know now what I put my friends and family through and the thoughts now are still painful to me!

I hope this doesn't sound rude, but is she involved in drugs?

Re: Were You a Bad Teenager?????

She does smoke, but nothing worse, thank God. SHe smokes cigarettes, drinks alot and thank GOD, she is not sleepign around. SHe does tell me more or less what she does, and of course, I yell at her, but we were all young once. Its' hard to say, 'Don't drink' when I was her age I was clubbing too...

But I was also workign and goign to school.

Re: Were You a Bad Teenager?????

I am telling you there is more to this girl then what's going on on the surface. You don't act this way at 19 for no reason. I worked with kids just like her and there's always a reason, whether it be abuse, drugs, alcohol, rape, trauma, etc. Something had to happen besides just bad parenting. I don't know, I've just seen too many kids like that to know that it can't just be that she's lazy. JMO.

Re: Were You a Bad Teenager?????

I really just think it's bad parenting...I mean, when you grow up with no responsability, no role models, no curfew, no discipline...see teh pattern????

Re: Were You a Bad Teenager?????

You know what? My best friend, as of freshman year in h.s. had no curfew, no rules, no chores. We would walk into her apartment at 7:00 a.m. - a bunch of 16 year old girls, and sit down and have breakfast, no big deal. You know I slept over her house every chance I could! At 19 years old, she was a full time college student with an excellent GPA and was awarded scholarships because of it. And she did whatever the hell she wanted whenever she wanted too!

ETA: Not saying my friend didn't have a couple of degenerate boyfriends (such LOW LIFES I hate even remembering them!!!), because she certainly did. I'm just saying somewhere deep down, FSIL knows better, IMO.

Re: Were You a Bad Teenager?????

I'm just saying, the patterns that you are describing with your FSIL fit very much into the destructive patterns of someone with underlying issues. I didn't mean to offend you

Re: Were You a Bad Teenager?????

You can grow up with no curfew, no 'rules' and turn out fine.. they key is the parent's expectations of the child and making sure the child KNOWS about those expectations.

When you are expected to do something, wind up doing it well, and succeed... more success will follow- because at that point- who wants to be unsuccessful again.

Sounds like your FSIL has had NO expectations placed on her and only knows how to fail.
