What did you think of Bush's speech?

Original post by marymoon

I totally don't agree with him on a lot of issues and I think he spouted a lot of what in my eyes is BS, but I think he gave a really compelling speech and I think he won over a lot of swing voters. He seemed very decisive. When he said 'you know where I stand' that was such a powerful statement. It was the kind of speech I wish John Kerry would finally stand up and give. If he doens't, he's losing a lot of undecided voters to Bush.

we turned it off when he tried comparing the soldiers in Iraq (maybe it was Afghanistan... he didn't specify) to those in Normandy! Don't even go there George!!!

Um do you know anybody currently in Iraq??? Because really it is worse than the news. I understand and think the Normandy was worse but I do think there is basis for comparisson. They don't show the half of it in the news, thats all I can tell you. I don't mean to start a fight but my FH is a Marine in Iraq now and the stories he tells me are horrific. It doesn't happen all in one devestating event, such as the Normandy, it happens slowly on a daily basis.

My FH just lost one of his best friends in one such attack. Those men and women deserve all the recognition they get and should all be honored. I don't know exactly what he said b/c I feel asleep but the comparrison is very possible.

I'm not talking about the horror that they have endured, but to even mention WW2 and the Iraq war in the same breath. This war isn't like WWII, we shouldn't be there! Thats why i said what i did. I understand what he's trying to say, but it offended me. Thats all.

I agree. Bush was comparing the bravery of our current soldiers to the ones in Normandy, and I can't believe someone would think our armed forces today are any less brave than those in WWII.

like i said, i understand what he's trying to say, and don't imply I'm saying our troops are less brave! I'm just saying that our troops shouldn't be there in the first place, and i take offense to him trying to make this war sound more noble than it is. We should not be there!!!!

I hated Bush's speech b/c I can't stand how he's using 9/11 like some showcase backdrop. It was mentioned like every 15 minutes. I feel ike he's trying to make us feel afraid and like he's some big protector.

I want to know about:

Taxes for most of America - not the richest and not the corporate breaks

Social Security

Anti-terrorism $$$ - why isn't NYC getting $$$$ it needs?????

Kerry irritates me and whether or not we feel personally that we should be in the war or not, we are there and I'm sorry but it offends me that people talk so much about their opposition to it, my man is there fighting, right or wrong he has no choice in the matter and before anyone says his choice was made when he joined, he joined because it was the only option to get an education and provide for a family in the future and was told that there was a 99 % chance we wouldn't go to war while he was serving (by his recruiter) Unfortunately he signed the contract on August 11th, 2001 so with September 11th that all changed.

Its sad how many of our men/women there worry about how many people back home disagree with what they are doing, it makes them upset and worry about people will think when they get home.

It's a shame that more people don't just stand behind them in time of war. They barely have the essentials to survive while they are there, they deserve more than to see protestors and hear people bi*#hing at home.

I understand that your FH is doing the job that he signed up to do. I am sorry that so many young Americans enlist in the Armed Forces because it is the only opportunity offered to them to go to college or raise family. While I understand your frustration , I think that you should know that most of the people opposed to this war are that way because of concern for our men and women overseas. I hate the idea of our own men and women being killed and put in harms way for a reason that does not exist. I supported the war in the beginning. I think that Saddam is an evil man, but in the past few months I have realized that the facts were wrong. Our people are fighting to free a country. Noble , yes. Justified occupancy, no. There are no WMD's. We are in a war against a country that has done nothing to us. The protesters n( at least the ones I know) are not against your FH they are with him. They want his safe return. They want him home with you and serving his country here, where he is needed most.

I thought his speech was great. I like that he laid out a plan and was firm on his stance on the war on terror.

yes but........he said the dumest thing yet...now you all are living in new york and i am not...but he said' the us is the safest it's ever been'.....ok GEORGE.......code orange in new york.........yup THATS safe......what a dumb a$$

Part of the reason why NYC is remaining at orange is to get the additional federal funding and national guard protection that comes with it.

Bloomberg and Pataki could lower the level back to Yellow which the rest of the nation is at. But why if leaving it at orange gets you these extra perks?

NYC is definitely safer now than it was since shortly after 9/11. Frankly I don't even think about the terrorists and such anymore. The only time I think about it is if I read it on the web or in the news.

ny is not ANY safer then it ever was...come on man.how can you even say that....dont you thnik anyone at any time can do what ever they want......ie.. just walk on a subway, bus, mall.the list goes on and on....and as far as the MAYOR or gov loweriing the level ....know they cant it's not up to them......the extra perks.....ok lets think about this one....people dont travel to YOUR city because of the orange level, so whats the extra perks...new york is paying how much money to protect the city and and any given time anyone person or persons can change the safty of the city........

i am sorry that you think that the city is any ssafer but please tell me how prove me wrong i would love to agree with you.........after all my parents and lots of friends STILL live there and wont move away..so please PROVE me wrong

Re: What did you think of Bush's speech?

The crime rate in NYC has dropped every year for the past 10 years. Its at an all-time low (since the 50s I believe).

Places like Times Square that were normally hooker corners have become tourist and shopping centers.

You are saying that according to your logic... its not safe cause anybody can come onto a bus, subway, etc. Well guess what... this can happen ANYWHERE. Its not just a NYC thing. Ever hear of Columbine? (sp?) Ever hear of Oaklohoma City?

Oh... and if the govenor and/or mayor has no control over the terror alert? Then who controls it? Its controlled by the Mayor I believe.

So there... your proved wrong.

I am saying that Times Square in particular is completely transformed from the way it was back in the 70s and 80s. You can pick up a hooker anywhere if you try. Thats not what I was trying to convey.

NYC has been the safest 'large' city for the past few years when it comes to the crime rate. This all started once Guiliani got into office.

NYC has a better crime rate than Detroit, Las Vegas, Miami, DC, Los Angeles, San Francisco. I can go on and on, its well documented all over the web.

The only 'large' city that I believe had a comparable low crime rate to NYC was Boston.

first off..........bush has nothing to do with the crime rate over the past 10 years....thats the mayor.....

as for times square........um mayor and police chief

and yes problems can happen anywere ny, la, even up here in maine.but come on.......the us is not any safer then it ever was....if it was then the president could say it will never happen again..you say columbine or oaklohoma but thoses were done by our own people......i am taling about people from other places.....as for the orange level..the mayor does not have control over what TOM RICH says the level sould be......

i am not trying to be a a$$ or start a fight, but come on YOU really feel safe like nothing WILL EVER HAPPEN again......i dont think so.......as a new yoker who works in the city.........do you remember the SMELL, and SMOKE....i for one dont EVER EVER want to loose anymore , friends, family or people i dont even know, for something that i dont think we have any control over.....it's sad but i guess thats just life.......

Re: What did you think of Bush's speech?

i actually have to disagree here -- the city has put alot of money into making Times Square more family friendly. Yes, you can geta hooker in NYC, but most of them stay away from TS for fear of being arrested
