What do you think of people?

Original post by Ronnie&Theresa

Who take advantage of the system?
Meaning all of the agencies who help those ..
and it makes me sick to see MY taxes paying for people who don't need the help when there are so many people out there that do!

I think there should be a hotline to report these people!

Re: What do you think of people?

FI's aunt was in a near fatal car accident 2 years ago. She had to undergo extensive neck surgery where they had to take a bone from her hip and put it in her neck. Her neck is held together by nuts and bolts. She cant turn her neck, lift anything, carry things or even do the laundry.

She however is working. She is an aide in a public school. All she has to do is just sit there and watch the children during lunch periods, monitor the bathrooms and answer phones.

What stinks for her is she is completely limited to what she can do. She survived the first wave of layoffs, but was told her job would be eliminated by school years end.

Someone like her its very hard to find a job because she is completely limited, but she does what she can do.

I am very proud of her because she is doing something and she is even going to school to be a speach therapist.

A friend of ours, his brother is deaf and he reads lips and signs but sometimes its hard for him to work certain things because of communication, but he too does what he can.

My cousin has down syndrome and works in pizza hut. He loves it. He works in the back and its not a glamorus job but he loves that he can work.

Some times people do what they have to do. Hopefully its all legal. If its not legal the system will catch up to you. Like someone said earlier someone she knows it caught up to that person. Yea the system may take a long time, but hopefully in the end it does catch up to those who are doing wrong.

When did this become explain things that have nothing to do with the original SUBJECT?

Maybe I should sing........

I know this girl named Maxi......

Murder she WROTE!

Re: What do you think of people?

I have to disagree there. I think what Chippa said does have to do with the original subject. She is stating cases where people COULD be using the system but are not, and are doing their best to be out there working and NOT taking the money from the funds we are talking about. Just as Becky stated about her father having a disability, but still working and not taking from the system as well.
I think it is the people like Becky's dad and the people Chippa spoke about that show us most people can find some kind of work. It may not always be what you desire, or even what you are trained for, but if you can work than work, and that is what these people are doing despite their disabilities. My cousins fiance lost his job after 9/11, he did get unemployment for about 3 months while he was looking, but due to the economy could not find anything in his field. Instead of continuing with the unemployment he got a different type of job so he could get a paycheck, took all sorts of cop tests (because he decided that is what he wanted to do) and he will graduate at the end of may from the State Parks Police academy. That is the way the system is supposed to be used.

Re: What do you think of people?

I am not saying that I do not agree that there are way too many people taking advantage and ****ing all of us dry. I would bet most of us even know someone who has taken advantage. But there are some that even though they are disabled and could easily just say, alright I can collect and not work anymore, who don't and do what ever it is they can do to earn a living. I have seen where a lot of people will not take a job because they feel it is beneath them, and that is crazy.

Re: What do you think of people?

such a fiery subj. I used to work in a school in the city where the students would be asked to bring in supplies at the beginning of the year. For some kids, it was no problem, the notebooks, pencils, crayons came right in.

for others, they'd be waiting half a year for their mothers to buy them what they needed. But the kid would come to school with $100 sneakers on! When you'd see some of them (the mothers), they'd be decked out in expensive clothes & cell phones etc ... no jobs, out in the park all day ... smoking & drinking with their friends, some of them younger than me at the time!

Then they give you this line ... I loved this one ...

We're waiting for the end of the month to GET PAID!

Paid?! I'm thinking ... you'd actually have to HAVE A JOB TO GET PAID!

That's what aggravated me! Not the truly needy, who I'd buy supplies for & bring food for & spend hours before school & after to help any way I could. I'd go to their houses & spend time with their families when they needed me & went to their parties when they invited me.

But the ones who clearly took advantage & saw it as THEIR RIGHT to have their money. They felt they were owed! That made me sick!

Christine..

U are THE BOMB..

Also Liz I agree So many people think that work is beneath them.
IF I wasn't working I would DO ANYTHING to make $$$$$.......................
Survial is Key!!!

I hate people who think they can't answer phones bc they have a college degree..
Pathetic.
IF you can't get work..
GO to the supermarket and become a cashier OR SOMETHING!

Theresa - I agree with that 100%.

Re: What do you think of people?

With all due respect to Wendy and her aforementioned plight....

What galls me is when people who can't pay for them and don't want them CONTINUE TO HAVE CHILDREN! 4, 6, 8...let's keep milking the system. The more children I have the MORE MONEY I CAN GET!

I cannot tell you how many times I have come thisclose to getting myself arrested on the subway for wanting to tell off a clearly frazzled, verbally (and sometimes physically, if you consider slapping toddlers across the mouth physical abuse) abusive mother in Coach and Gucci, cell phone and tons of jewelry smacking her kids around and screaming at them 'I TOLD YOU TO SHUT YOUR MOUTH NOW DO IT BEFORE I SLAP YOU SILLY!' And I'm sitting here thinking 'Didn't you already just slap that child silly?'

Sorry T - this is probably off topic a tad, but it brought it to mind for me....

Good points Christine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

T - what song is up next?

Re: What do you think of people?

T - I was just thinking that yesterday. There is always something that you could do to make $$$. Especially if you have kids.

But I've heard this excuse 100 times ... what I'd make wouldn't cover the cost of daycare (still referring to my days in the city schools). But most of these girls ... I'll say girls b/c they weren't any older than me, most of them! ... didn't even finish HS! How can you think that you'll raise a productive member of society if you're not working to be productive yourself?! Not even a GED ... its shameful IMO.

Those kids were being taught the wrong priorities. Easy money is best. Work as little as you can. And the kids paid the price. By the time they were in 3rd grade, those kids ... you knew it so early on, were destined for gangs & drugs. I used to cry over it sometimes.

Re: What do you think of people?

Everywhere you go, people are abusing the system and other people are paying for it. My mother once spent about 18 mos. unemployed. She went on 30+ interviews but couldn't get a job because at the time, she didn't know the computer system. When unemployment ran out, she drove CAR SERVICE 4 months until she finally found something. 6 days a week, 12 hours a day -- it was rough, to say the least...and I taught her how to use a pc in my spare time, because no one was willing to train her. Believe me, I know the true definition of 'broke'

FH's mom has taken in foster kids forever until she adopted 4. She found out that the birth mother of her eldest (adopted) son has 2 more kids going up for adoption - only if FMIL takes them. FFIL had to tell her no because they legitimately can't afford another 2 kids. But what does that mean? This crackhead keeps giving birth to children only to abandon them! Its disgusting but at least I know that my family does their part.

Re: What do you think of people?

I guess we see now why the Soviet Union fell...abuse of the system...

the question is...should the US go to a more socialist system, like Europe, and accept the abuses? or should we practice a more laissez faire type capitalistic economy and get the government out of what businesses do...and risk the business owners greed taking advantage of the workers...

I'm not sure there is a solution...mankind has been searching for centuries...

Re: What do you think of people?

Michele said it perfectly!

You want to hear something disgusting??
I used to work in my college years at a check cashing place. We cashed social security checks, gave out food stamps (eventually we didn’t any longer--THANK goodness), welfare checks and other stuff. You wouldn’t believe the ordacity of these people that would come in their bi$$ing: This is in their EXACT words so please don’t think I am uneducated writing it this way… They took $150 off my stamps. Don the goment know I gotta pay for my cigarettes and bea?
This is what I would hear on the first day of the month when I was working and it was a Friday/Saturday: YO Girl, I can’t wait to get my money and go get my nails done across the street, get my hair done and get my fat outfit fo tonight. I am gonna get my grooove on!! Meanwhile they are carrying name brand bags and outfits on their bags. AND the woman was about 28 ish with three kids.
It would pi$$ me off when I would leave work on a weekday evening and I would see the SAME geniuses that came into our store to get their checks cashed, hanging out on the corner drinking beer. GREAT LIFE!!

What saddens me the most is some of the people that did come in their to claim their medicare/medicaid (not sure which is money for senior citizens) would get less money as I got to know these people. These were the people that NEEDED the money. Not these other idiots.

I am all for helping out the less fortunate but my experience working in the check cashing place made me realize how many people abuse the system and will never get caught.

Re: What do you think of people?

There are places you can call to report abuse of the system. Do it! If you know someone is abusing the system, report them.

As for my tax money. I figure my taxes go to way MORE people who actually need it than those who don't...and it has a better chance to get to needy people if it's not in my pocket or paying for something like new shoes. With the economy the way it is, and no new jobs being created (the number of jobs in the country has been steadily declining since 2001), I know there are people who need help.

So, I say, take my taxes. Build better roads, a better healthcare system, better schools, and get us out of this deficit. Oh, and cut the corporate welfare (corporations now - it has increased several hundred percent over the past 2 years - get more of your tax money than citizens, can you believe it?) so that people who really need it get it, not big corporations like Exxon.

Re: What do you think of people?

I think that societies throughout our history have had people who don't want to work...are unmotivated...

what the rest in society has to do...should they be on the street? be provided for? or be killed?

julybride444 Posted:

Re: What do you think of people?

Most people who need help are not 'lazy'. With the economy the way that it is there are tens of thousands of people seeking work. The average lay-off period in NYC right now is 9 months.

Not to mention, many people don't have the education or resources to get the kinds of jobs we have. We are all priviledged, and should realize that. We had family or resources that helped us to get where we are...not everyone has that.

Re: What do you think of people?

There was a time in our country where if you were unemployed, you were beat. Now we have all these social programs to assist in these cases. I think there will always be abuse of the system - in Switzerland (I think its Switzerland) their disability pays about 60% of a persons salary, and they have a HUGE percentage of the population on disability compared to us - why? Because they can! I think to an extent, its human nature to try to get something for nothing.
