What do you think of people?

Original post by Ronnie&Theresa

Who take advantage of the system?
Meaning all of the agencies who help those ..
and it makes me sick to see MY taxes paying for people who don't need the help when there are so many people out there that do!

I think there should be a hotline to report these people!

Re: What do you think of people?

Wendy, I am talking about people on welfare who has no plans to get off, not people who lose their jobs b/c of 911 or anything like that. The ones that are on permanent vacation while I have to lug on the subway everyday while they stay home all day and watch Jerry Springer.

Re: What do you think of people?

lets not get into unemployment...most people work much longer than 3 months and put in WAY more money than they get back...and I think the requirements are a bit higher

DH was laid off...and he paid in TAXES more than many peoples full salaries...he definitely PAID into the system...and what did he get back $405/week...(this is not everyone's...only half of your weekly salary UPTO 405)

and you can only collect for 6 months - now with a 3 month extention b/c the economy is so bad...

I don't think that collecting unemployment is in the same catagory as 'abusing the system'...I hope none of you have to face the stress, tribulations, or financial problems of either you or your DH/FH being laid off...

What pi$$e$ me off is that I have to work to support people who would rather sit on their lazy fat a$$e$ all day instead of pounding the pavement to look for a job. Also the people who keep having kids to get more welfare money should be shot

I don't mind contributing to help the elderly, we will all be there someday, but the cheaters who work the system need to GET JOBS

Re: What do you think of people?

but we don't contribute to the elderly...the amount (theoretically) goes into an account for US when we get to be 65...

unemployment is an insurance tax...

Re: What do you think of people?

Shamma I was resonding more to the posts about judging someone based on appearance rather than knowing the situation. I also have known people who cheated the system and I have known some who got caught. The problem is that there is not enough money within government programs for enforcement of all the rules. It used to be that there were many investigators working for Dept of Social Services etc., and they would catch these people. Now the money just isn't there to pay their salaries. This allows people to use and abuse the system. However it is also up to each one of us as individuals to report abuses. Most people don't want to get involved. They won't do it. So it continues.

I guess you are right Wendy, such a shame, we all lose out in the end

We need some changes in the laws or something, people should not be on welfare for life.

Re: What do you think of people?

yabbobay - I agree with you that to know someone's situation, walk a mile in their shoes....
My FH was laid off as a trader from CSFB shortly after 9/11 and it was so tough....
We had just moved into a an apt. that was 2K a month and he had already bought my ring!!!
I know how that feels and how hard it is....

But I also know that my FH was up an out of the house finding a job the next day....
Didn't complain one bit, didn't sit home and sulk....

(NOT AT ALL SAYING THAT YOURS DID.....just that some people do)

I was so proud of him....and ya know....it wasn't easy...he didn't find one right away, but he tried hard and it payed off.

That's all I ask of people on the system....get up, get out and FIND A JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: What do you think of people?

Just to mention, people are cheating on a lot of 'systems' not just unempolyment. Medical insurance fraud, car insurance fraud, just to name a few. Why do you think it's so expensive to have medical or car insurance? People take advantage and we ALL wind up paying. Unfortunately, people who are reporting false claims believe they 'deserve' it, not even realizing that they are the cause for it being so expensive.

Theresa, this guy at my job tapes it and watch it everyday *can we say he needs to tune to other stations or read a book* I think that is stupid TV. IMO, I guess its good entertainment for some.

Re: What do you think of people?

starhead, that is so so true. I recently saw a show on television about insurance fraud. These people had severe neck/back injuries and were riding rides in amusement parks, doing heavy construction, and moving huge boxes. However, I think the insurance agencies are more on top of catching people trying to beat the system than government agencies are.

Re: What do you think of people?

Most insurance companies hire their own investigators (mostly retired cops) to keep up on the freud in their industries.

Re: What do you think of people?

sage...that was our situation exactly...

but its very hard to abuse unemployment...(for very long that is)

1. you pay an unemployment tax...so essentially you get it back...and DH paid in way more than he got back!!

2. you only get it for 6 months (now with an extension for certain situations)

it just really upset me that unemployment was piled in as abusers...this is the one category the people really aren't abusing...

Re: What do you think of people?

LizD, That's true, but sooo much of it goes by unreported. I work in insurance and believe me there is sooo much fraud going on there is no way that it can all be investigated.

I think that unfortunately, there is a way to abuse everything that was meant for a good purpose, including unemployment. Like people like the one Misty talked about, who get an off the book job, and still collect it.
Everyone goes through changes, and definitely when someone gets laid off they are entitled.
But when people knowingly take advantage of the system, especially the welfare, it's not fair. There are those in circumstances that totally deserve welfare or food stamps, and as they are getting rejected, the ones with the Coach bag, platinum and ice all over, are happily walking out with their checks in hand.
Those are the people that I think we are all sick and tired of.

Re: What do you think of people?

It also makes me mad that people who are able to work, but have a handicap do not. My father is blind and has been a financial aid counselor at Suffolk County Community College for twenty-seven years. Now he COULD collect social security benefits and NOT work because he is blind. However, he is fully capable of working and never thought about sitting at home and collecting whatever the government will hand out. Having a handicap is not the same as being completely disabled. My father got a college degree while losing the little vision he had left. Which translates to hemorages in his eye which would leave him completely blind for about six months out of the year.

I get so irritated when I come across people who are capable of working but would rather not. Especially when they are telling me why they are not working and all of the jobs that they could do are running through my head and they are asking me to reduce my fee becuase of their boo-hoo situation which is not as bad as my dad's.

Re: What do you think of people?

T asked me what I think so here you go (it is long)
I believe that there should be systems in place to help those that truly need help. Women who leave abusive husbands and have 2 small children need to get a place, get training (very often) and have a bit of time to get their lives back in order. I am ALL for helping someone who is truly sick (such as a fireman who is burned in a fire, or a truck driver in a real car accident or even someone who has cancer and cannot work during treatements).
I also believe that if you are laid-off you should get unemployment benefits BUT you should also be actively looking for a job during that time. In this economy there are many, many people who just cannot find work. And I like many of you, have paid A LOT more into the system then I will EVER get back. When I was laid-off I got severence and I didn't apply for unemployment until 2-weeks before my severence ended. I could have collected both the whole time though.
I believe in food for the homeless and medical care for children. What I don't believe in is working OFF the books and then cashing a nice, fat refund check so you can buy yourself a diamond necklace (I have a friend who does this). Because of off-the-book workers many of us pay hundreds of dollars more per year, since they are not covering their fair share. Or those who 'think' that they are too hurt to work when they can mow their yards, and wash their cars. Or my favorite, we have a family friend who does have a horrible disease and he is on long-term disablity (which is totally justified) BUT his kids get FREE college because of this so he drives a JAGUAR! Hum, pay for school and drive a Honda. WHy are MY tax dollars paying for your kids to go to college when I still have my own student loans to pay if you can afford a freakin car like that and to take huge family vacations?
I believe that a 22 year old healthy man/women should NOT be able to live off any system. They should be given help such as training or day care for their children (temporary at least). Did you know that most people on Welfare are not allowed to get a job? That is because if they find a job that pays then $300, and on welfare they make $450, welfare is stopped all together if they take the job. When you are supporting children you just do not take that kind of a cut. That is what really gets me. The gov't should give the person a limited number of time to take the $300 a week job and pay only the $150 to them until they get established and begin to earn more. That would save our systems hundreds of thousands of dollars. But the gov't officials just keep making it easier and easier NOT to earn your own way. And there are also lots and lots of self-esteem issues involved. Once your family is on welfare it is very hard to get off, and many women feel that they are no-good or have no skills so they don't even bother to try. Education and better public schools (especially in poor areas) would help STOP the need for programs like Welfare. But who wants to invest in education, when the country can buy guns instead! And don't even get me started on teen pregnancy and how trying to prevent that would help end the need for many of these programs!
