Who take advantage of the system? Meaning all of the agencies who help those .. and it makes me sick to see MY taxes paying for people who don't need the help when there are so many people out there that do!
I think there should be a hotline to report these people!

Re: What do you think of people?
Exactly Chippa..... I am temping now, but was collecting unemp. for a month before that. Some of the taxes I paid during the time I was employed FT go towards unemp. And it's not that much, the most you can get per week is $405. Not a lot when you are paying for a wedding. Everybody's circumstances are different I guess.....

Re: What do you think of people?
so you are saying a person is going to work for 3 months, collect for 12 then never work again just to get over on the system because if they work again they are paying back into the system so that person is going to work 3 months for their whole life just to get over on the system, i sincerely doubt it.

Re: What do you think of people?
a dog's age ago, when I used to work in Waldbaums - i used to see these people & how mad they got me... the kicker was when they were buying the food for themselves & not their children! it got me soooooooooo mad.... things that were evident that a young child could not eat, and they're buying it anyway...... and with the whole unemployement thing - i'll never forget - about 7 yrs ago, i went into a friends apt in the projects, and his mom was on welfare... i left that apt sooooooooooooo friggin confused! there was like a 50 somethin inch TV in the house, and all leather furniture!!!!!!! the way people abuse the system is disgusting, and the fact that they flaunt it in your face is even more GHETTO!

Re: What do you think of people?
It bothers me to no end, and I know of a few people that I used to work with who abuse the system. I never reported them, but I'm not like that, but there actually is an unemployment insurance fraud hotline in NY. The # is 1-888-598-2077, and the NYC office info is New York City Investigation Office PO Box 672 New York, NY 10014-0672 (212) 352-6632 But let me say, you have to be doing something really illegal for them to get on your case. Like, a person like Mistyeyed's former friend could get in a lot of trouble.
edited to add former friend

Re: What do you think of people?
MrsFuture: I was working temp for a while and paused my unemployement. I even had jury duty for 2 days and I put on my unemployement unable to work for 2 days.
I just wonder why people try and beat the system, it just catches up to you eventually.

Re: What do you think of people?
Could someone please tell me who FICA is?? I do not have any relatives names FICA or I did not agree to give anyone named FICA a portion of my pay. My GF who works for ACS/BCW says she sees this all the time when she goes to do her site visits. These people are living better than she is. I wonder if after a time, shouldn't they kick these people off are not trying to better themselves

Re: What do you think of people?
FICA has something to do w/ the social security taxes taken from your check I think?? or federal income , oh, I forget where are all the accountants on here!!

Re: What do you think of people?
I often wondered the same thing about FICA. Here's what I found:
Social Security and Medicare (FICA) Taxes The Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) is a federal law that requires you to withhold two separate taxes from the wages you pay your employees: a social security tax and a Medicare tax. The law also requires you to pay the employer's portion of these taxes. Unless you have employees who receive tips, the employer's portion will be the same as the amount that you're required to withhold from your employees' wages.

Re: What do you think of people?
In his younger frat-boy days, Keith collected unemployment while he was in college. He took a year off, worked and went back. He worked for his uncle, so his uncle did not object when he filed for unemployment. He was livin' large. But then a few years later the IRS sent him a letter informing him that he was supposed to report that as income and pay taxes, he didn't and he owed a ton of money He got what he deserved and learned his lesson. I hope that everyone does.

Re: What do you think of people?
I just want to play devil's advocate here for a minute. I too get really angry when people abuse the system and yes it happens a lot. However, please bear in mind that a lot of people have lost their jobs in the days since 9/11 especially in this area. I would imagine that many of them had nice things (Coach bags, clothing etc) before becoming unemployed or underemployed. Should they sell them? Would you? Food stamps and programs like WIC are not meant to be lifelong entitlements. They are there to help people temporarily, when they are down. Unless you know the person and know their financial situation I would not presume that they are cheating the system.
I get angry about this subject because a long time ago it happened to me. I had just given birth to my son, already had a 6 year old daughter and my husband's employer walked out on his business and left owing all his employees 4 weeks back pay. So here I was with 2 children, 1 of them a newborn and no money. I was left with no choice but to get help. Believe me it was the worst feeling ever!! We were given an emergency food stamp voucher and because I was so embarassed I went to a store in another town. As I was leaving the check out line with my food and my two kids I heard the woman behind me on line say to the cashier 'People shouldn't have children if they can't afford to feed them!'. I was so incredibly angry that I started to cry and practically ran out of the store. I wanted to say something but didn't want to make a scene in the middle of the grocery store. I have never felt worse in my life!!!
Just remember this saying 'There but for the grace of God go I'.
