My friend is going to a wedding and she wants to know what is an appropriate gift amount to give as a couple...she is not in the wedding party, it's a co-worker....If you have any suggestions that would be greatly appreciated! TIA

I think that the place makes a difference. You should always cover your plate costs. If a couple gave me less then 400 they would not be covering. JMO --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I also think it's not the guests responsibility to 'cover their plate'. As the bride and groom you can only HOPE that each guests covers their plate, but as a guest, you are an INVITED GUEST.....it's not a cover charge. Also everyone's situation is different, for me I could only hope to receive more generous gifts from bosses at work vs. office staff that can barely pay their rent.

Re: What is an appropriate gift amount?
I will tell you that for my wedding last Nov., the average gift from a couple was $200-250. Some people gave me more, but they were either close family or people who were much better off financially than others. hope that helps.

GIVE WHAT YOU CAN.
I'm sorry i have seen this question asked so many times...nothing to offend the original poster, its not against you. Its against anyone who feels the need to write that people should always 'cover their plate'. This is a tacky mentality i think. Do you think my friends who live in PA really get how overdone NY weddings are? I don't expect them to cover..i expect them to give what they feel they can afford. That is how i've always done it. ABOUT $200-$250 per couple. Just seems like a nice number.
If anyone invited me to their $600 per plate wedding and expected that to be their gift, they would have another thing coming to them!! I'd wash dishes all night before handing over that much $$.

what if you went to a sat night wedding at some of the more expensive places (ex: oheka, carltun)--would you give $600+ per couple? most people do not 'cover' their plates --and i don't think you can really expect them to...
I agree. It's not your guests' 'fault' as to whether you decide to have a very extravagant versus a modest wedding. They shouldn't have to pay more because you choose a more expensive place. It's a GIFT, meaning that they don't technically have to give you anything. People should give a gift that they are comfortable with. I really dislike the idea of 'covering a plate.' Why invite people to your party and then ask them to pay for themselves!?!?!

Re: What is an appropriate gift amount?
I'd give the same amount to someone who had a wedding in their backyard as I would to someone who had an extravagant affair. Where the wedding occurs and how much the bride and groom spend on the wedding is their decision and shouldn't affect how much they get as gifts. The purpose of the gift is not to repay them for the cost of your plate, but to give them something they can use for their future together.

I feel 200 per couple is an appropriate amount no matter where it is. I do not alter my gift amount according to the place they chose.
I totally agree with you...and as DH and I have learned this week going thru our envelopes clearly not everyone prescribes to this method! My own Matron of Honor gave $40 for her and her husband??? I mean????

I gave $200 for the last 2 weddings I attended (neither on LI) and I attended alone. This was for a family member and the other a friend. Neither wedding was at a traditional hall and I know for a fact that both were under $25 per person. I don't think the hall matters. For me it's the relationship with the person that determines the gift.

Good luck! If that's what you're expecting, you're going to be one disappointed little girl!
It is not a club, it is a wedding. You should give based on what you can and what your relationship is, not what some crazy girl decided she needed to spend on her wedding

If it's just a co-worker I'd give $150 if it's just you or $200 if you're bringing a guest.

Re: What is an appropriate gift amount?
Give what you can comfortably afford! I read an artical on Dear abby or her sister (I forget) that this girl went to the wedding of her BF cousin. The Cousin was rich and the girl came from lower middle class. The girls mother who wasn't invited bought a gift from their registery for her daughter to give and a check for $25. And the rude bride and groom were reading the checks out loud, none under $800, until they got her $25 check! they read it out loud rudely, and turned to each other and said 'I guess this acceptable!' It isn't the price but that thought that counts!
