What is your favorite hors d'oeuvre?

Original post by yswedding

I can't decide what to include for cocktail hour. Its outdoor tented, or on grass, in vineyard.

My favorites have been pigs in a blanket which my RH calls Franks en croute -which is hysterical to me I also loved their mini crab cakes and scallops wrapped in bacon.

I know you said you were looking for some more unusual one though so here are some suggestions:

Risotto croquettes
Caviar pomme de terre
Scallop ceviche
Mushroom beggars purse
Carpaccio of beef
beef sate'
chicken sate'

This thread is making me so hungry. I love appetizers!!!!

Well my favorites are pigs in a blanket, and potato puffs. And potato pancakes are good too!!! I also like those mini pizza bagels and mozzarella sticks (this is probably the stuff you really get at Costco rather than a wedding, hahaha).

If you're looking for a different appetizer, there's one that I love that I've only ever had at my aunt's house. It's this bacon cream cheese puff thing, which is soooo good! She takes the dough from those Pillsbury dough in the can thing, which usually separates into triangles after you pop it out of the can. She puts Philadelphia cream cheese in it and wraps it up. Then she wraps bacon around the outside of the puff and cooks it in the oven. My fiance hates cream cheese but will actually eat these cause it doesn't really taste like cream cheese inside after it's cooked - it's more like melted cheese.

My friend had the most amazing cocktail hour and it was entirely kosher but you couldn't tell.

The standouts were the Dim Sum station that had choices of chicken and chive steamed dumplings, beef dumplings and veggie.
The sushi station with sushi chefs that were rolling the sushi right in front of us.
Baby lambchops, carving station, Peking Duck station!!!!!
It was incredible.

My other favorite appetizers are:
Shrimp Cocktail
Spring Rolls
Min beef wellingtons
Sliders
anything with lobster!!

Thats my idea of appetizer! I must be the only one on the board that doesn't like pigs in blanket.

Okay, not to find the dough for my kind of appetizer!

i would have to say pigs in a blanket too

we booked the thatched cottage and we get to pick 35 passed hors d'oeuvres for the cocktail hour! its one of the main reasons we picked them, the list has some really great hors d'oeuvers on it if you need any other suggestions let me know!

I would double check with them, I am booked there also and I was told at my tasting that you don't get to actually PICK the 35 that are going to be served the day of your wedding. The man that coordinated out tasting told me that that list was what they have to offer and the chef picks what is the freshest and in season at the time of your wedding. Just thought I would let you know!

Edited to add :
Just wanted to add though, At the tasting EVERY hors d'oeuvre we had at our tasting was absolutely AMAZING so even you don't get to pick which ones, what ever you do get will be awesome!

I'm using a caterer that is doing a custom menu for me. I thought this was great, since my family will only like middle eastern food, but I figured I could get creative with hors d'oeuvre ... but was drawing a blank.

I have worked for a lot of caterers and one came up with mini fish n chips in a little terra cotta pot. It is definitely a hit.

Also the potato pancakes and mimi lamb chops are always the most popular.
