We had a really bumpy flight home from NY two weeks ago and the more we fly together, the more I realize how much of a white knuckle flyer DH is - and I thought he actually enjoyed the 13 bottles of airplane red wine that he downed.....
Me, I never used to be nervous, but I've found I like it less and less...And I've done Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, Greece, etc.

Yes indeed, what I wouldn't have given for all those free travel vouchers when I would travel the world with my girlfriends. They never get put to good use by ANYONE in DH's family. For shame
Where in the world have you been, O Fair Felicia???? Sounds exciting!
Oh my travels sound like nothing compared to yours!
I have been to London a few times (would like to go again, I know a fine lass who lives there... hint hint! ) Also been to Paris, Greece, Italy, Switzerland .. and all over the Caribbean. The rest of my traveling days were contained to the U.S. (Hawaii, Florida, California, Texas, Arizona .. the usual )
Nothing as exotic as Japan, Thailand or Tahiti/Bora Bora (where I'd REALLY love to go, that is if I had a hubby who loved to travel )

London anytime, baby!
I actually got to travel with my job a lot. It was cool because I went places I wouldn't have gone otherwise and, of course, everything was paid for
So, I got to go to Greece, Singapore, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China...but I also had to go to Detroit 3 times, and then on a bus trip through Kansas City, Iowa City and Jackson Missippi Then there were some others that weren't so bad, like California and DC...
DH and I have alist of places that we want to go...my top choice being Bali!!! but also Cairo and Bangkok...
I've been able to do a lot of Europe since moving here - all of England and Wales, Berlin, Paris and we're going to a little town in Spain next week, althogh I've been to Spain before. But, I simply can't wait till we go to Rome next April!!!!! Yeah!!

This is me - - i.e., jealous (that is the closest thing I could find, unless this guy can be used as green eyed jealousy, though I know he means ack! )
It is so nice to be so well-travelled. And living in London gives you the opportunity to convenienly see other parts of Europe as 'weekend trips' (yes, you may rub it in some more!) Would love to see Spain as well, and practially all the other places you've mentioned.
To be fair, I'm sure if I truly persuaded DH and had my heart set on somewhere, he would accomany me on some journeys. Yet the real (other) issue is the lack of money and time to do so... ahh, to dream

I'm an OK flyer.... with valium and whiskey.
DH will avoid it all costs. When we were booking our HM, DH joked - are you sure we can't drive to Puerto Rico?

I don't mind it. I travel for work so I fly often. Although since 9/11 I am a little more nervous.

Re: What kind of flyer are you?
Farah, what town are you going to in Spain?? I lived in Seville for 13 years.....God I miss it!!
I get to travel a bit for my job now, and I did even more when I lived in SPain -- I was in exports. (Now I'm in imports )
I love to travel, wish I would do it by train instead of plane tho!! But then I wouldn't get to such neat places...Rio, Cape Town, Chile, Paris....oh and the places I still want to go to!!

Re: What kind of flyer are you?
I haven't been on a plane in 5 1/2 years. Basically I couldn't afford to go anywhere- the typical college student story. Now I'm working and trying to get myself motivated to get on a plane. I've got this irrational fear liek I'm going to crash - and planes are supposed to be so safe. I had a couple of bad dreams of crashing. And then of couse I was flipping the channels and I saw some show on the National Geographic channel about plane crashes.
Anyway I'm not going to let that get in my way. I don't want life to pass me by when I can be enjoying it. And hey, if I crash, it is just my time, and I hope its quick! But I''m sure I'll be fine.

For the fearful flyers....
I'll be honest, I've never understood the whole 'fear of flying' thing. Then again, I've been a flight attendant for 11 years.
I know EVERYONE has heard this (sorry for the redundancy)...let's look at the statistics LOGICALLY..... The ONLY reason plane crashes make such big news is that they so rarely occur and there are so many people involved. EVERY DAY, we risk being killed in a car crash because they occur so much more frequently (and make the news far less).
If it makes anyone feel better - planes simply don't 'fall out of the sky' from turbulance. There has never been a crash due to turbulance. The injuries occur from people not being buckled in properly and from loose luggage (why we ask that you keep everything under your seat and to REMAIN SEATED when that sign is on).
I'm going to be honest, my fears when I go to work are dealing with the people that self medicate with alcohol and drugs before getting on an airplane. What most passengers don't realize is that at cruising altitude, the air is much thinner than at ground level. The effects of alcohol and drugs (prescription and illegal) are very different. For example, for every glass of wine at cruise is like 2 on the ground. I can't tell you how many times we've had to divert because of people getting out of control and behaving irratic or in a threatening manner, or from medical emergencies from people imbibing too much. It's hard enough for me to serve my section, deal with elderly passengers, watch the unaccompanied minors, AND worry about terrorists without having to worry about a drunk guy telling people that 'this plane is going to crash' (yes.... this happened last week to me) and cleaning puke off the wall/floor from some lady that drank too much (same day, differnt flight - AH how I love the holiday travel season).
For those that are truly afraid to fly, talk to your doctor about getting a mild sedative. PLEASE don't go to the bar and get sloshed. If you do drink, drink responsible. What most people don't know is that it is illegal for us to allow anyone that may be intoxicated on an airplane. If you come on my plane reeking of booze and acting drunk, by law (and risk of a PERSONAL fine- I don't make enough money to afford a $1000 fine) I have to deny you boarding. The Captain also risks losing his license if he alows anyone suspected of being intoxicated to fly on his plane.
Everyday I deal with fearful flyers. I try my best to be accomodating. If turbulance freaks you out, sit towards the front of the plane, the back tends to fish tail more (they're designed to do that). Please don't get wasted. OK, I'm off the soapbox..... Amy
