tiki.....keep the ring. He called it off, not you. Why should you give it back? It's yours! Sell it and put the money towards the things you already paid for!!! I've been meaning to FM you.....you should list the vendors and stuff you paid for so that the new brides that may not have a date picked (i'd say post it on every forum) can maybe see things they don't have that they might need and then you can maybe get at least some of your $$ recovered.

Re: What should I do with the ring???
Sorry I'm at work and couldn't read the whol thread, but just so you know the law is NY is that you have to return it. If you don't, he can sue you. I'm not a lawyer and this isn't meant as legal advice, but you can look into it if you want, legally an engagement ring is a 'gift in contemplation of marriage' - if the marriage doesn't happen, you have to give it back.
ETA: Don't know if someone posted this earlier since I didn't read, but if they did sorry to repeat. I just wanted to make sure I said it since the overwhelming poll response seems to be for you to keep it.
ETA Again: Also, since his sis is a lawyer, I wouldn’t mess around since she prob knows these laws.

Take the money from the ring and spend a few weeks on the beach in Kefalonia!!
Spend each and every penny on yourself! You deserve it and so much more!

Re: What should I do with the ring???
I would just hold on to it for a while in case he mentions it to you. I'm sure it'll come up eventually and it'll be a lot easier if you have it. Just put it in a jewelery box somewhere and don't look at it!

It might be safe to get him to put something in writing that he doesn't expect it back, that way he can't come back later asking for it.
I also second getting it appraised before trying to sell it. You need to know what its worth before you can accept a selling price

I don't know what would be appropriate etiquette in your situation, you're the only one who would know best...BUT...if you do keep it, my advice would be to sell it and invest! This way you don't really have anything to remind you of him, and you make some extra $$ off it!
I like this idea a lot. You might actually feel good about keeping the money then because it's made YOU money!

text messaging isn't a good documentation. Have him sign something legally.

If he wants to sue you for the ring, sue him for damages and $$ for all of the stuff you paid for while planning the wedding!!!!

Re: What should I do with the ring???
I would give it back....not because I think he deserves it, but I think I would feel like even if I sold it whatever I bought with the money would be tainted for me....but that's just me....I think giving it back would give me some closure too....if it were me. But if you can sell it and buy something awesome than do it!

Re: What should I do with the ring???
I absolutely agree with Bluegreen.
I would go to his house while this is still fresh and get him to sign a document advising that you can keep the ring. He be okay with you keeping it now, but after he speaks to his friends (whose opinions hold a lot of weight in his mind - judging from what you have said in this post - that he told you he only got engaged because everyone else was ) and they gas his head up he may change his mind.
We all agree that you deserve that ring. I would just hate to see you left holding the bad with all the vendors you contracted and having to deal with this in litigation months down the road. I would nip it in the bud now and make him sign.

I would go to his house when you know he will be home (sneak attack style) with the two letters already prepared and just ask him to sign.
