What words do you hate when someone pronounces differently than you?

Original post by NovemberSue

I hate when people say on-velope instead of envelope. I also hate when people say fuss-trated instead of frustrated.

FH is from the south and he tends to put the emphasis on the wrong syllable in some words. Like, he says 'UMbrella' or 'INsurance'.
He hates it when people say 'joolery' instead of 'jewelry'.

My mom says 'qwarter' instead of 'quarter' and also 'rePEAT' instead of 'REpeat' (in reference to a re-run on tv).

Or people that say 'kyoopon' instead of 'coupon'!!

I'm definitely in the 'aks' instead of 'ask' haters club...although I catch myself when I'm reading stories say 'a$$' instead...I think it's the Bronx chic in me...

I also hate libery instead of library...

I also hate 'brefess' instead of 'breakfast' - DH does this and I make fun of him!

Oh oh! Another one that drives me nuts....it seems to me that only American born people of Irish descent do this bizarre pronunciation of Italian foods: 'Ricotta' becomes 'Rah-goat' and 'Prosciutto' becomes 'Prozhoot' and 'Mozzarella' becomes 'Mozz-arell' And anything else that ends in a vowel gets shortened to a hard consonant. My FMIL always says 'Rah-goat.'

DRIVES ME BANANAS! I think it's so freakin' pretentious. Native Italians from Italy don't pronounce them that way!

Thought I bump this because it was so hilarious when I read it. I hate when people say scoo instead of School!

By the way, I'm from the south and we say a lot of words differently then all of you. The funny thing is that I don't hear NY accents anymore and every now and then I'll say a word like a NYer

My name: Marcia (I pronounce as ~MARSHA~) I get so many Marcies and Mar-cee-ia's...

So people even after I correct just don't get it....

chalk me up for another 'liberry' hater. Both my sister in laws say it that way - and they say semtember instead of september and valentime's day instead of valentine. Grrr.

My SIL says Ikea - 'I-KAY-UH' and now my brother who use to say 'I-KEY-UH' says 'I-KAY-UH'

It really bugs me for some reason. Hello! There's only one way to pronounce it - and it's not the way you say it.

Too funny! I missed this the first time around.

Let's see....my parents call jeans Dungarees, too! Must be a generation thing. My dad also calls a TV repeat a rePEAT. Ugh.

My grandmother used to say O-ven instead of Uh-ven...but that's because her first language was German. She used to massacre a lot of words!

I can't stand when someone says Aks, or bafroom (for bathroom), or irregardless.

My mother says Itly instead of Italy and it makes me cringe!!

I usually don't get too irritated when people pronounce things differently. Sometimes it's actually endearing.

My DH makes fun of me when my Long Island accent rears it's ugly head, but then again, he can't tawk 'cuz he's from Da Bronx.

This thread is great! My grandfather was also known for saying turlet/toilet, erl/oil etc and berl/boil.

My uncle says fil-um for film. It annoys me.

I just thought of some really annoying ones - I hate it when people say 'Oorange' for orange. Or 'Hal - oween', instead of Hollow - een (Halloween) or 'Floor-ida' instead of Fla - rida (Florida), or 'Hoor - ible' instead of Hah - rible (Horrible), or 'Door - is' instead of Doris! These drive me nuts!!!!

drives me nuts when people mispronounce my last name. I know its a hard last name, but they add letters to it. Their is no 'L' in my last name, but people tend to add an 'L' to it.

Not really a word but more of a sentence. In FL a lot of people say 'I'll tell you what'

aahhhh WHAT!!!

I say it to FI to bug him because it bugs him just as much as it bugs me.

I hate when people dont pluralize a word that should be pluralized. For example 'I have 50 cent' UHH!!! Hello you have 50 centS....more then one buddy.

I have a lot of fun with words that change depending on where you grew up in the US.

For example. NYer's say Ant vs NEer's Aunt.

Or NYer's Pecan or Southerners Pacan.

I always laugh!

Valentimes instead of Valentines.
Lon Gisland (with a hard G) instead of Long Island

And it drives me nuts when people say

Co-lleen (with a long o like in oval)
instead of Colleen (with a short o like in octopus)
