What would you do if you found out that your e-ring was....'recycled'

Original post by suven

DH and I were talking about one of his cousin's wive's diamonds. Turns out, the guy bought the diamond for his last girlfriend, but they broke up before he ever got a chance to propose.

When he met his now-wife, he reset the diamond and proposed to her with it.

And, the wife doesn't know...

what would you do?

I'd be really annoyed!!! I mean he bought it for someone else!!!!! It would bother me that the diamond had been intended for his ex. I understand it was put into a different setting, but it would still irk me terribly.

And my ring is 'good' recycled too, also from my mom!!!

I would throw a royal fit. That's horrible but most men just dont get it when it comes to things like this, it means saving money to him and to us we werent good enough for a new diamond, etc. etc. etc. and ladies you know there are always alot of etc.

I don't think it would be a big deal. If you think about it, some jewelry stores buy diamonds from people. How do you (or your FH/DH) know that your diamond wasn't intended for someone else?

That could very well be, but the fact that it was intended for someone your FH had once wanted to propose to is very different that it being Joe Schmo's ring in wisconsin...

Its all about emotional attachment i think...

Yes, I agree. My FH was married once before and I would feel like it is a bit cursed.

If it was a family members or an antique ring that once belonged to someone else I probably wouldn't have a problem with it.

I guess I WOULD wonder why he wouldn't sell it and get another ring...

I wasn't thinking that way in my comment before, but I can understand it.

Hmmmmmmm, I have to think about this one. In one hand I'd be pissed but in the other I wouldnt b/c its just an object and very expensive. I think I would look at it and say ugh you were intended for someone else but in the end I got it. and most importantly him and his committment. Heck some dont even get a ring, so I guess it cant be that bad- at least its a different setting to be meant for her. things could be worse.

Im reading all of these post and Im a little surprised as to how many would be really really mad. its just a ring- just a diamond- is it really that important? just as important as the man/ the marriage? Diamonds arent cheap- would you really want your man to spend 'more' money and put 'that' kinda stress on him and his love for 'you'? life is too short, there are so many beautiful settings to make it your own- and who cares if another woman helped him pick it out intended for her- I think the true gift is HIM not the diamond. and just think of all the diamonds that come after anyhow- the wedding band, anniversary gifts, etc.

I guess I would be upset if I found out. But I think it's better since he at least had it reset so it's not the same 'exact' ring.

I would be very upset. I wouldn't like knowing that he picked out the stone with another woman in mind, even if it was reset.

I would be very hurt that he could not take the time out to pick out a ring specifically for ME. When you recycle an engagement ring it's kind of saying that it was a annoyance for you to spend the time shopping for it in the first place.

There are guys out there that actually buy a ring and hold onto it for that 'special time'.

Would you ladies be pissed at that too? My co-worker bought a ring... hasn't proposed to anybody yet.

Would you be pissed if he proposed to you in this scenario?

I would be pissed at either situation if I found out about it a long time after the fact. The couple that I mentioned earlier have been married over 3 years already. As far as we know, she still doesn't know that he bought it for the other woman. We think he hasn't told her because his wife knows the other woman and dispisses her...

Wow...I would be sooooo pissed. Ohhh my God. I don't think I would be able to marry the person w/o thinking or having doubts that they cared. I mean that ring was intended to be given to someone else in mind. It was designed with affection towards someone else. I really would be offended. I would feel like I'm worthless. Granted he saved money...but a ring is symbolic.

I had a friend who was previously engaged and bought her wedding dress. Well they called off the wedding. After a few weeks she tells me and another friend of ours that she plans to use the dress to wear when she eventually gets married...I was like WHAT. That dress was bought with the intention and love for someone else. If I were the groom marrying her one day I would be pissed.

I don't think I would be annoyed, definitely because he reset it. He proposed to ME, gave ME the ring, wants to marry ME. I don't know that I would want to know but a lot of people don't have $10,000+ to throw around (and if they do, I wouldn't mind a few thou )

I would not want the diamond. I know FI spent months looking for the perfect stone for me and to think he would have done that for someone else (not proposed) and then given me that stone (albeit reset) would still bother me.

My dad reused a ring (not just the diamon). He bought a ring for one woman that he proposed to (never married) and used it a FEW times for different women. He never married again after my mom and that was when I was 13. The last woman he proposed to kept the ring and had it made into a cocktail ring using her diamond earrings.

I also know someone who kept her wedding dress for YEARS. Tthey broke up 4 weeks before the weddig and she told me she intends to wear it one day. I saw the dress once - in like 2000 or 2001 and I know she still has it.

This probably wouldn't bother me because he went through the trouble of having it reset. But I wouldn't want to know.

If he gave me the same ring as her bought for her, well that's different. I'd wring his neck!

i agree
