Whats better Wustof or Henkels...

A friend of mine is registering for knives, I didn't, any idea which is better?

My Aunt, who is a Chef, said that that they are both excellent knives - so I picked the one I thought looked nicer!! LOL!

I prefer Wustoff they feel like a sturdier knife, and the blade is attached to the handle better

They all have good reputations. We received 2 sets of Henckels (one really good - the other just ok) - so it also depends on the grade within each brand as each brand has high and lower grade product lines. My brother-in-law is a chef and he prefers Sabatier.

Also the reason they are all good is because they are forged knives. Forged knives are hammered down out of a single piece of metal, hardened and finished, unlike stamped knives which are stamped out of a flat sheet of metal......so it just depends on brand name recognition. Wustof & Heckeles are from Germany, Sabatier is from France. And thus my history lesson on knives ends.

verdila, you should see what I have to go through...my FH is the VP for the company that manufactures Sabatier.

(hence my bias.)

But like you said, it all depends on the product line.

Definately Wustoff.....they are the ONLY company to still use actual German blades. Even though henkels says they are German made, their blades are imported from other countries. German steel is MUCH better, like German cars. That's why Wustoff knives are more expensive. It's like comparing BMW to a Toyota, both are good cars, but the BMW is more expensive for the obvious reason. So even though I own Henkels, I would much rather have Wustoff.

we registered from henkels...and got it at our eparty...

but then DH's aunt (a chef) bought us sabetier (sp?)...she said they were better...

Dont agree with your comparison of Toyota vs. BMW. I dont think the disparity b/w Henckels & Wustoff is that great. Henckels makes some very good knives and some of the product lines are very comparable in price actually.

Jenny5150- wow, you must have so many wonderful Sabatier knives, no need to register for them, and now I understand your choice of favor a little more!

By the way we also have a nice set of Sabatier knives that I got a couple of yrs ago and love those too. I'm a bit of an amateur chef and a good knife is so important as is cookware.

we registered for the Wustof set. The salesperson in Fortunoff we asked said that they were both very good, but you have to like the way they feel when you hold them. You have to be careful b/c Henkles also makes a lower grade set that only has one icon ( I forget ... I think its the symbol of the guy). The one that has 2 guys (check on the box) is better. Also, if the knife has metal all the way through to end, (you'll see it on the handle) it's probably better. Ones that have all black handles usually do not have metal completely through.

We have a 20pc Grand Chef set. It's not like we have a crapload of knives lying around!

My family & friends get hooked up (they've all got Grand Chef block sets.) My sister is always coming to me for block sets when she has weddings to attend. She's able to get them $800+ sets for under $200.

My FH manufactures dinnerware & flatware too, so that we change more often. It's pretty cool being able to walk through his showroom and pick out what I want.
