What's your opinion ...

Original post by BellaChandella

on having kids at a wedding?

This is a HUGE issue between the FH & I.

He's got 4 neices & nephews. One will be 9 at the time of the wedding. The others 3, 2 and 1. I said no kids. Which if I'm saying that, then I'm excluding my own cousin (which she'll be 11), but I always said no kids. He's also got cousins who 2 of them will be 18 at the time of the wedding, and one will be 15/16.

NONE of the kids are in our BP. We are not doing a FG & RB.

I only have 1 child on my side, and I said I'd say no to her to have the adult reception I always wanted.

He can't decide.

But what's your look on it?

((The FH will be reading this! LOL his first REAL post he'll be reading! haha))

This is a hefty issue that comes up A LOT on the boards. I think its probably the #1 debated issue!

I had the SAME fight with my brother for TWO YEARS during the planning process of our wedding about the kids at the wedding. We said the only child allowed as the FG an that was IT. No one else.

IMHO a wedding is not an appropriate place for children. Ppl are drinking and having a good time and they shouldn't have to worry about rugrats running around. Kids will be silly in front of the videographer and try and get in every picture...they will be restless and bored and quite frankly who needs that?

Yes I know that not ALL children are like that, but once you get a bunch of kids in one room....the ones that are 'always well behaved' will copy the behavior of the kids being crazy, and it becomes a romper room.

To the ladies that are having kids at your wedding, more power to you....but we sai NO and it was NO for our wedding. My DH's brother refused to come cause we wouldn't allow his FIVE children there. That was his loss and he will regret it always.

Re: What's your opinion ...

well we havent really discussed it but as i read the posts i came to realize something.

FH's couins are all 18 and up. except for 1 he is 12. (FH has a small family) We would have to invite him. We couldnt possibly invite the 12 yr olds 2 brothers and 1 sister and then FH's other 3 cousins (they are all really close), without inviting the 12 yr old.

my cousins are mostly older too. but i do have a 5 and 8 yr old (one may be my RB) and a 17 and 15 yr old. the 5 and 8 yr old were at our eparty (my cousin couldnt find a babysitter), they are so well behaved that you wouldnt have known they were there.

so i would have to invite the 5 and 8 esp if one is our RB, and then how could i leave out the 15 and 17 yr old?

Personally i wouldnt mind them being there, but i think my mom would. She is big on NO KIDS there. but whatever. i have 1 cousin with a 2 yr old.. who will not be there!!!! and another cousin is prego and i wont have that baby there. I think they would be too little to be there.

no i know i will have it handed to me when everyone gets the invites and notices their children arent invited--- i know my grandmother will comment to my mom or me and i really dont care- FH and I are paying for it and they are not so they dont get an opinion- and i know i will have my dads side mad at me and more my mom (which i feel bad about) cause my grandmother blames my mom for every wrong family function i hate it....but my mom is prepared to just say it is Catie and Chris' wedding and they decided on what they wanted and that it is our say in the end and if they dont like it then they dont need to come and celebrate

Re: What's your opinion ...

My only issue with children there are

my max is 120pp.

With having kids there, we're leaving out adults who I personally rather have there because they would be able to enjoy and remember it.

The FH now sees where I was coming from now that he read what you all wrote.

oh yess--- the easiest way for me to get the point across that there are NO children at my wedding is

FH and I are not inviting those children who will not be at the wedding to the e-party this June...hopefully this will help clear the issue but i dont think so lol

Re: What's your opinion ...

i am in the minority here but i could not even imagine getting married and my nieces and nephews NOT being there - it would be like my sister or brother not being there - its just NOT going to happen. My nieces, nephews and cousins are invited ( a total of 4 kids from age 1-9 at that point) therefore FH's cousins and nieces are invited (total of 9 (from 1-13)

we feel very strongly about this issue - kids are invited to all our family weddings and there has NEVER been an issue with behavior - my nephew is autistic and he can still sit and eat and enjoy himself without causing problems.

My niece was the hit of my brother's wedding - she danced the entire night away - and even strangers were picking her up and dancing with her, she had the time of her life and still remembers it - she is so excited for my wedding and I cant wait to see her be a princess again

this topic makes me bc thinking of getting married without them there to see it . . .and without them there to celebrate with me, really upsets me for some reason. . .

of course i 100% see your opinions. . . . and you all make a lot of sense but i just wouldnt be able to handle it!

I am going to have kids at my wedding, I dont see what the big deal is, they are human and should have a good time, even though they are kids. There are not alot of small kids in my family, but I still cant go without inviting them. My nephew, 9 years old, no doubt he will be there or else he will never talk to me again, lol, my cousins, friends kids, etc. I will even have a candy bar set up just for them

Re: What's your opinion ...

I disagree with most people on this. Kids are kids. They are part of the family. I don't have a rule on it. Most people don't want to bring their kids. I feel like the INSTANT you put your foot down all hell breaks loose and people freak out. I just don't need the stress of some family member resenting me because I would not allow their children at a FAMILY event. I don't know - I think kids add to the energy and excitement of the day.

Keep in mind that I teach grade 5-8 ages 10-14. I work with younger ones as well. Kids these days are tough. I will admit that much but weddings are exciting and kids really love that stuff. It's not fair to exclude them. I know that most of you are concerned about discipline. That is for their parents to deal with. If they want to add watching their children to enjoying your wedding day so be it. I don't know - you all know your families. You know how the kids behave and if the parent has a clue on discipline or not.

All I know is that I have read more posts about brides stressing over this issue than anything else. I feel very strongly that it is not worth it. Let the kids come. Your day will be great no matter what. Don't create drama where you don't need too - that is just my opinion.

Re: What's your opinion ...

I don't think it is appropriate to have children at an adult affair like a wedding. They are expected to be quiet and not touch anything and stay up later than they usually do so all in all, not a great place for kids. Plus, why should we, the bride and groom, pay for a babysitter at the wedding? Isn't that the parent's responsibility?

Re: What's your opinion ...

God forbid some of you have children of your own someday and are forced to make a decision about them. Maybe you were just not thinking but some of you are talking about children as if they are all terrible and devils.

Kids are kids. If you don't want them at your wedding, FINE but there is no need for name calling or lumping them into a negative category. Many of us not only love children but we work with them daily. You were a kid once, don't YOU remember what it felt like to be left out? They are HUMAN BEINGS!!!

What is that matter with some of you? Get over yourself. It is not just YOUR day. There are going to be a hell of a lot of other people there and last time I checked a wedding is about the marriage of TWO people - not just one and the coming together of TWO FAMILIES!!!!!!

***ETA: Sorry I don't mean to attack. I just feel bad for the kids. Some of your posts about them were so negative. I DO UNDERSTAND why you don't want them there. I just don't think it's fair, that's all.

I am definitely having kids at the wedding. They are still part of the family and they are so excited about it. Everytime I see FH cousins who are 4 they ask if the wedding is soon.
