Should I book them ahead of time or is better to buy them there? I don't want to get locked out of specific days/times. Any advice? Thanks!

There are so many flights that you really do not have to worry about booking in advanced. Only if you need a certain time (i.e., you want to be in Oahu at 8 am). Also, by checking on Travelocity there is not a price difference if you book earlier or later.
We booked ours all together several months before the trip.

FH and I booked our flights TO Hawaii in the fall for our August wedding. He just booked our inter-island flights this past weekend without a problem. I think you are still okay for some time.
we booked our flights while in Hawaii - we had no problem getting the flights we wanted. Their scheduling is totally flexible if you want to change too.
