Re: Where did you all begin and how?

We started looking at recpetion halls a week after we got engaged lol I wanted to get a date in the summer so I knew we had to get the ball rolling. Start by looking at reception halls and booking a date first. Thats most important. Also, if you are planning on getting married at your church you need to find out if that specific date is available. Good luck and CONGRATS!!!!!

First of all, congratulations!

Now as for planning - It really depends on when you want to get married, where, and how picky you are about your vendors. If you just KNOW you want to get married on a certain weekend at a certain RH, then I'd say start looking now. I had about 9.5-10 months to plan my wedding. At first I felt totally overwhelmed but I things just started to fall into place on their own.

Once you find your RH I found that it all happened very quickly. I just focused on one thing at a time - location, STDs, band, photography/videography, dress, etc. Once you check one thing off, you can move onto the next.

Honestly, though, just ENJOY being engaged. Don't get stressed out. Have fun with it all - we only get to do this once!

to tell you the truth, after we got engaged i didnt plan anything until 4 months after. I wanted a little time to enjoy just being engaged. Then after 4 months we looked at halls and booked one and church at about the same time. THen started looking at vendors, at first i looked at photographers mostly and 2 months after we booked our RH we booked a photographer. After that just really started making lots of appts with vendors and booking them. So about 6-7 months after we were engaged i started the vendor booking. After photographer started looking into dj, then limo's then florist, then hair and make up, soon after did video. I started dress shopping 8 months after being engaged and around the time i was booking the vendors. Then took a break for a bit and after a while did alot of the small things and then HM

Re: Where did you all begin and how?

Well you do have alittle time, but I always hated when people said that to me. LOL (sorry).

I would suggest start w/your big vendors. Start looking at RH, look to see if your church is open for your date (if you are having your ceremony at a church). Really ,do as much as you want to do. The check list on here is great, but don't let people (like family, friends, etc.) stress you out or pressure you. the ladies on here are great and everyone is willing to help even with the questions that you feel are stupid. ~Carly~

Re: Where did you all begin and how?

we didnt plan a thing for 2 mos or so,, we just wanted to enjoy our engagement and celebrate. however, after that figure out what kind of wedding do you want? summer, winter? what season, whats your budget? Then start considering halls. Do you like halls that are more ornate/fancy? Or do you like a more understated yet elegant place. Do you wanna get married where there is 1 wedding at time only, or a venue that may have a few weddings going on. also think about your church, or will you get married at your RH? coordinate the hall and church, and the rest will fall into place. but those 2 things are the most important to do first, i suppose.

Re: Where did you all begin and how?

i would say about a week or 2 after we got engaged we made appts to look at halls... we did a lot of research online first to see what types of venues we liked... DEFINITELY MAKE APPOINTMENTS!!! don't just show up! you will be surprised how many halls have events during the week! i know someone who just went w/o appts and had very bad experiences because they were refused tours because of other events going on... in a way it's a very good thing because you won't have strangers wandering around during your wedding but at the same time they were very upset at how they were treated- it turned them off to the venue totally...

congrats and welcome! hope this helps!

Re: Where did you all begin and how?

I am defiently getting married in a church just don't know which one since I haven't been a parishner of any church in a long time I just go to the chruch a few miles away. That's the part that concerns me the most not finding a church to get married in. I always promised my grandmother that would be one thing I would do for her. But I know it will all work out in the end!

Congrats!
We started out by doing some research on RH. When we got it narrowed down then we went to see them. I did the same with my other vendors. Research first. My research was alot on this site, google search engines,& BBB.
Good luck and enjoy the planning!

Re: Where did you all begin and how?

honestly FH & I got engaged in Nov & we decided before doing anything to plan our Engagement party. So we did that first which we had in Feb & then in March we booked our Church & RH & went from there. With Florsy DJ & Photo/Video.

Re: Where did you all begin and how?

Like many brides said, pick a time of year first, and then where you may want to get married. Also know ahead of time how many people you plan to have attend your wedding bc the reception halls always ask that. That will determine which rooms they can show you, or even if the venue is suitable bc some halls require you to book the entire venue and there are usually person minimums. Also think about whether you have a preference for the weekday or time of day. Sat evenings are most popular (and therefore more expensive)...and Sat or Sun morn/afternoon or even Friday evenings are potentially cheaper (and/or lower person minimums for particular rooms).

After the RH, I started on the big vendors: photographer/videographer, DJ, and florist (in that order). Believe it or not, only then did I go dress shopping. Actually I bought my shoes first haha. Then hair/makeup, and random small details.

And above all, congratulations and don't forget to enjoy the process too! Wedding planning can be stressful but it's also a lot of fun and something you only do once.

Re: Where did you all begin and how?

Congrats and welcome! RH is the best place to start....it helps you pick a date, season and help sets the theme and tone of your wedding....once you are done get your big vendors done next (photo/video, florist, officiant...etc)

good luck and happy planning!

Re: Where did you all begin and how?

Congratulations on your engagement!!!

We didn't do anything when we first got engaged. I wanted to take a couple of months where we were just happy with the engagement. About a month after we got engaged, we talked about what type of wedding we wanted - my idea (a small destination wedding) got thrown out the window and we're now doing the whole big shebang!!!

After that, we looked for a RH that had what we were looking for. We were easy though, we didn't care when we got married. We also only went to one RH before we booked. We both loved it so what was the point of dragging the process out.

After that, we called the church and we were good to go.

Honestly the church was my toughest vendor to book. It took forever to set up the meeting with the priest. I was nervous because neither FH or I belong to a parish, but we are using my mother's church (which makes her happy) although I did have to lie and say I lived with her and belonged to the parish (I can't believe I lied to a church).

Re: Where did you all begin and how?

Congrats on your engagement! The best place to start is just to figure out the basics...when do you want the wedding...where (area wise)...what time of place. From there, look online and halls and try to figure out which ones you want to visit.

We took about 2 months before we finally started looking around at RH and we just booked about a week ago for 2/13/10, still have basically everyting else left to do...

Re: Where did you all begin and how?

We waited a few weeks and just started looking at nice places we've heard about or seen, without any regard for prices or anything like that-- just making fun days out of it...(Brooklyn Botanical Garden was the first place we saw). Then after that we set a budget, started comparing prices and got more practical with it. It helps to get recommendations from freinds or on this site, narrowing down an area, time of year etc.

Don't stress it just yet. Enjoy being engaged and I would just start exploring options before you dive into serious planning! Congrats

Re: Where did you all begin and how?

I was engaged on June 3rd and had pretty much every vendor (jncluding RH and Church) booked by July.. my advice is take it slow... (much slower than me) and enjoy planning it! I was a nervous wreck cause I did too much at once. Now I am just sitting back and doing some small stuff (i.e. hair trials, DIY projects etc) and finally enjoying my engagement.

The first thing you should do is decide what time of year you want to get married then look at RH's and also find out if your church has that date (if you are getting married in a church). Looking at RH's was my favorite part!! There are so many beautiful ones on LI.

ETS: also talk about a budget... I felt like things were out of hand for me and FH until we decided on what we could afford etc.
