Where were you when the lights went out & what did you do all night?
Original post by jennbaby
I was getting my nails done, left without polish on, had candle light (not by choice) dinner with John, and then my neighbors & I had a 'candle' party outside out homes. We must have had the best smelling block in Queens with all my Yankee Candles lit!
Sad news is 3 of my fish died I am so sad

I was at home and reading about how to protect my computer against this worm on the Microsoft Home page when my computer shut down. I thought I just caught this computer worm then I realized that my radio was not playing. So I went outside, met the neighbors, and decided that I should buy batteries, water, and a portable radio. Radio Shack was not a pleasant place to be in yesterday with a huge line of sweaty bodies, but I needed a radio! I'm now a proud owner of a shower radio!
Jenn - Sorry about your fish!

I was at work. Computers shut down - someone went out to hear what was happening on their car radio. Thats when I headed home. Took me over 3 hours to get home - driving on the Northern State. I gues i shouldnt really complain - i did get to sleep in my own hot humid bed. eeek!
Jenn - i am so sorry for your fishies. I was talking with my mom last night about all the horribel things that the lack of electricity causes -for restaurants, delis, ice cream shops and pet shops

I was at work, and I'm still at work !!
Jenn - sorry about your fish - I was actually hoping my monster cichlet would die, but no such luck. I have one last fish and because he is so big, I can't put anything else in with him. That fist will probably outlive me!

I was at work in Hicksville. I live in Merrick (8 miles away), and it took me 2 hours to get home (Accidents galore).
Mark is NYPD and was at work, he just got home about 1:30 and has to go back at midnight. So I just listened to the radio and played solitare, did crossword puzzles than went to bed. Very boring evening!!

Another one driving home from the beach...Nicholls road lights were out...thought it was weird but local..Then when I got to 347!!!! AGHHHH Mayhem!!! Funniest thing...we live in a basement apt..from MIl and a sump pump (elecrtic obviously ) pumps the water up to the pipes...so we couldn't use the shower or toilet for fear it would overflow.. I hose joe off after work as he used soap! He was screaming because the hose was so cold!!!

Re: Where were you when the lights went out & what did you do all night?
I was in a windowless office when the lights went out. I had to feel around to get out of my office. Almost tripped on a pile of books (that was my fault for leaving them in a bad place). Walked down 14 flights of stairs. Walked from Hudson and Houston to 37th and 6th with a co-worker. Bought Chinese mesh slippers along the way. Best $4 I have spent in a while. Took the bus to Queens and had Dad and FH pick me up at co-worker's daughter's house (she was SO nice).Got home around 10:45. Showered, ate (hadn't eaten since 1:30PM) and went to bed. Woke up this morning and found out that the LIRR wasn't running, nor were the subways. President/Publisher of my imprint called me to telling me that the company was closed. She asked how I got home and when. Told me to enjoy the day and relax. Nice lady.
Have been cleaning and doing laundry all day

The place I hate the most--work! I spent most of my evening and night getting home. Then we went on a mission to find food. I was very exhausted and started to gag (I do this when my stomach is on empty). At 12:30, I had Froot Loops and potato chips and dip for dinner. Nice...

Sorry about your fish Jen
I was at work in my office getting work done and all of sudden, bam, NO LIGHTS. I thought it was just our building till I called FH downtown and he told me that his office had no power. This was around 4 something. We met up by the 59th St Bridge and didn't get home till 8:30pm And that's only b/c FH's client was with us and he had his car parked by the Midtown Tunnel. If not we would've walked all the way home. When I got home, I just threw my clothes and jumped into a cold shower. It felt sooo good. Then I ate cold Pizza and went to be around 11:00pm. I have never been so exhausted in my life. I never realized how long the 59th St bride was.

Re: Where were you when the lights went out & what did you do all night?
I was about to leave work, and all of a sudden everything went dark for about 10 seconds until the backup generators went on. Than it was chaos for a minute or two. At that point we were told that noone was leaving, and as my first day as an official RN, I was running all over the place! I sure got a lot of practice starting IV's and drawing blood! I was supposed to leave at 4:30, didnt get home until about 9:30. I hung out for a little while with my neighbors and my family that were all hanging out down the block with candles lit and drinking beer, than went to bed, had to be back at work today at 8 am. I felt so bad leaving work, I wanted to stay, but I was anticipating 3-4 hours of traffic and didnt want to get home at 2 am and get back to work at 8. Luckily there was no problem getting home.

Marcela - I had this same conversation with so many people since yesterday. Everyone thinks the 59th street bridge is no big deal, but I walked it on 9/11 and I walked it yesterday and it was a loooooong walk!

Re: Where were you when the lights went out & what did you do all night?
I was at work in midtown; walked to my dad's apt. on the lower east side. Stayed there all night. No power, no water, no phone. There were 4 of us up all night, smoking cigs and talking. (I know, really healthy) I went home to Brooklyn this afternoon. My poor dad just got electricity back at 8:15 P.M.; still no water!

Demetra: Seriously!! I was like a little kid. I kept on asking Fh 'Are we there yet?' It seemed like forever.
How are you feeling??? My friend is also pregnant and she had to cross the 59th st bridge also. She's due at the end of Feb. She said she wasn't feeling so hot last night, but she's okay today. Thank God! I feel so bad for you girls And the same friend was preggo on 9/11. So this was her 2nd time preggo walking over the 59th st bridge
