Where were you when the lights went out & what did you do all night?
Original post by jennbaby
I was getting my nails done, left without polish on, had candle light (not by choice) dinner with John, and then my neighbors & I had a 'candle' party outside out homes. We must have had the best smelling block in Queens with all my Yankee Candles lit!
Sad news is 3 of my fish died I am so sad

I was home sick with migraines (good thing though, I guess) I got stuck home w/FMIL while FH was at the firehouse... I sat outside on the porch swing and looked at the stars. We got our power back at around 11:30 last night.

i was in the airport in baltimore waiting to get on a flight to ny when i found out. i was coming home to go to a showcase at the old field club, which was obviously cancelled. anyway, my flight made it to macarthur only 2 hours late but there were no lights at the airport! just some emergency lights and firefighters with big flashlights. it was pretty creepy. the power at my parent's house came back at 10:30 pm but went out again for a few hours this afternoon. unfortunately i had two job interviews in nyc today, but couldn't get to them hopefully we'll be able to reschedule before they find someone else!

Re: Where were you when the lights went out & what did you do all night?
I was shopping in CT. My mom had surgery in the morning so i went to shop a little and get a late lunch while she was sleeping. We were in Kate's Papiere in Greenwich, CT when the lights went out. Thought it was just a local thing til we couldn't get am radio in the car or use the cell phone. When we got to the hospital we realized it was more than that.....the hospital had generators for the necessary equipment -- which didn't inlcude the elevators :( Once we knew she was fine and settled we trecked back to our powerless hotel (at about 11pm) and had turkey sandwiches and potato chips b/c that was all they had. They gave us 2 glow sticks for the room but we spent a good hour down by the pool and bar--then tried to go to sleep but the hotel room was sooooo hot....no windows that opened or anything. Spent most of the night sitting in the lobby where there was a little breeze from the doors. Luckily, they released her today and we came home to a house with power! :)

I was on the 21st floor of the Conde Nast Building in Times Square- made my way over to the West Side and waiting with the masses for 4 1/2 hours to take the ferry- watched people faiting all around me- I had a woman faint in my arms. Wound up not getting home until 11pm because they dropped me off @ the North side of Hoboken.
Didn't get our power back for 24 hours.

I was on-line when the lights went out and our oven was making some strange noises. I really thought it was going to explode. I ended up reading with a flash light and snuggling with DH.

I was at work in the city too. First I had to make sure the computer and phone network failed over ok and then we took it completely done...luckily we did good! So once that was done, I tired to get a ride to Queens from a co-worker (he also offered to drive DH - there was like 8 of in the SUV) and it took us almost 2 hours to get from my office to the entrance of the tunnel (which is about 4 blocks from my office) and just as we get there they are turning cars away. So went back to the office and then decided to walk it to Queens. So DH, my boss and I walked took our 4 mile walk over the bridge and then to a restaurant in LIC - grabbed a beer and then my little brother took us to LI. Got home about 11ish. Not too bad...
Demetra - next time we should get in touch - we can walk together - I was considering walkin gto Astoria to my MOH's house but then found out my mom's restaurant was open for drinks.

I was at work when the lights went out...my FH met me outside my building and after trying to catch a ferry back to Bklyn...we wound up having to walk the entire way home...took around 5 hours. My feet were blistered and cut and it was very scary walking in the dark.
After we got home, we pretty much passed out from heat and exhaustion.
We didn't get our power back until 7 pm on Friday night...

Re: Where were you when the lights went out & what did you do all night?
I know I'm a bit late here with where I was, but was out at Fi's parents house all weekend, computerless.
I was at work on 47th & Madison & initially just thought it was an overload being that it was such a hot day. However, after calling mom in Suffolk & finding out she was out also got me into 'what the hell is going on' mode. Just then a security guard gathered our floor to the staircase and we walked down the 28 flights (everyone calm, making jokes). My boss behind me said I better have a plan once I got to the street.
All I kept thinking is, I have to get OUT of the city. I decided to walk to 59th Street & thankfully there happened to be a pickup truck that people were just jumping onto the back, although it was filthy and there was no tailgate to hold us in, I was like, why not. I jumped in (& got on TV) & he dropped us off at Silvercup Studios.
The streets were chaos, busses didn't seem to be running heading into Queens and so I started walking (heels, briefcase & all).
I walked from Silvercup Studios to Main Street Flushing....it was miles & miles. By the time I reached Shea Stadium I could barely walk...my feets and legs were throbbing and blistered. People were selling water in front of their stores and along the way I tried FI and parents on phones but couldn't get through.
I was never so happy to see a bus in all my life at Main Street. I got home, limping and the neighbor asked if I was okay & he brought over a big plate of BBQ they just finished cooking.
FI couldn't reach me (no landline phone...only portable) & so he headed over here and took me to his parents' house (he had to goto work that night). All in all everything was fine, I actually got catered to b/c I could barely walk all day Friday.
I kept hoping/thinking about all the Friday brides (Sat. too) & all the rehearsal dinners.
How did everything turn out for the Friday/Sat. brides this past week?
Jenn, sorry to hear about your fish :(

Re: Where were you when the lights went out & what did you do all night?
For me, I missed being stuck in the elevator by about 2 minutes. I just moved to New Jersey, so thank goodness I decided to walk to Port Authority from my job in midtown. When I got there I found a huge crowd of people & luckily met a very nice woman, who I walked with to the Ferry. After about 1 hour and a half and a different fainting woman standing on line in front of me, I got on with the woman from Port Authority, and another woman with a broken foot who we met on the ferry line & who had a car at the Park & Ride. So, we get to Weehawken & walk about 2 miles (yes, the woman with the broken foot did this, amazing) and finally a small bus took pity on us & gave us a lift to the Park & Ride. They let us out at a gas station which was nearby but still pretty far. So, this guy with a black SUV offers to give the two ladies & myself a lift to the Park & Ride. As soon as we get in the van, he shows us his wedding pictures from his recent city hall wedding to his new Russian bride he met over the internet. So, we finally get to the broken foot lady’s car & she drove me home. These were strangers! I was truly surprised at how kind peple can be in time of insanity. Took me about 3 1/2 hours, which wasn't too bad!

Re: Where were you when the lights went out & what did you do all night?
Before the lights went out I was on LIW.
I walked from 8th Street & broadway to 34th and 7th Ave to meet my mom and then we walked across the 59th Street Bridge where we finally met up with my 2 BIL's somewhere in Astoria and then we drove home. I started my journey at 4:30 and didn't get home until 10PM. My poor husband said he paced the prtment for hours b/c I couldn't get in touch with him. Finally at about 7:30 I was able to get through and tellhim I was OK.
P.S. I have a pair of sneakers under my desk. My feet are all cut up.

I know that I am late on this too but here is what I did on Thursday. I walked down 26 flights, walked to the bus, waited 2 hours for a Bklyn bus and when I finally got on the bus I had to stand 3 hours until I got home. I got home at 9:30 p.m.
